I'd be fairly sure Rodgers wanted both.
Sahin was the one that started the unease, I feel. Getting him, raving about him, playing him out of position and then letting him go again - it all just seemed weird for a manager with such firm opinions about what he needed.
Good signings? I was pretty happy with all the signings we made this summer. Mario, of course, was just an ink blot that one gazed at in the hope of seeing something positive. I've plenty of sympathy for Rodgers in terms of his signings - more hits than misses, I think. But we needed most what wasn't there - a really top player who was available and happy to come here.

He's done that loads of times. Within weeks of being installed he was lauding Lucas from the rooftops as someone "who understands the game we want to play". Same went for Allen - and then he either doesn't play him, or plays him in a role completely anathema to the one he talked up. And more latterly it's Lovren and his "commanding leadership qualities we so badly lacked."

Brendan Rodgers was left to reflect on the three Chelsea stars who got away on Saturday afternoon – plus Alexis Sanchez, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Yevhen Konoplyanka – and concede that Liverpool FC need to work “harder and smarter” to convince the world’s marquee players to end up at Anfield.
Rodgers missed out on Chile’s World Cup star Sanchez this summer, Borussia Dortumund’s playmaking midfielder previously and the Ukrainian left-sided star last January.
But it was the failure to land the trio of talents who ended up at Stamford Bridge which hurt most.
Mo Salah the Reds can probably live without, but Willian was the man who rubbed salt into the gaping wound opened up by Demba Ba in April, then there is Diego Costa.
Liverpool targeted the man on course to replace Luis Suarez as the Premier League’s Golden Boot winner when he was a 10-goal a season marksman at Atletico.
But they missed out.
“I had the chance to leave,” he told Mundo Deportivo last summer. “I was about to do so. Liverpool are a great team but, after so much fighting and overcoming many difficulties to earn my place at Atletico, how was I going to leave? I thought that it was very important for me to continue growing in this club and to play here for many years.”
When he did decide to leave, it was for Chelsea.
And after Suarez’s exit this summer he is the man Rodgers could most have done with on Saturday.
“We need to be better in the final third with that creativity and the ability to score goals important for us,” he said. “We have signed talented young players and I’m sure over the time – whether that’s with me here or not – they will show that they are very good players.
“We know what targets we wanted and what was out there, but for one reason or another they are not here and gone elsewhere. We work with what we’ve got and look to improve what we’ve got and get back to somewhere near the level we’ve shown over the last 18 months.”

Agonisingly runners-up to Manchester City last season, Rodgers had a golden opportunity this summer to build on a staggeringly exciting squad.
But with Sanchez electing to join Arsenal and Suarez exiting to Barcelona an opportunity has been missed.
Rodgers believes that is not the fault of anyone at Anfield.
“We were in a great position at the end of last season, with Champions League football and a way of working, but we just have to work harder and smarter to convince these players to come,” he said.
“As I said the club has done everything it could over the course of the summer to get the players who are going to improve us.
“But players look for more than just football terms. They look at where they want to live, they look at all these social factors and that’s something we can’t control. If someone gets offered say more money to come here but they want to go elsewhere, they want to go to London, there’s not much you can do.
“I think the club have shown their hand in terms of they will be prepared to pay the wages of top players, but whether they want to come here is a different matter.
“I think it’s where we’re at.
“We need to work harder and smarter again.
“We have brought in a raft of players who can hopefully develop and mould into a way of working and be better in the future.”

This is it.
The only one I was critical of was Balotelli - I wasn't even particularly critical of him, I just said we had to make sure we got Eto'o as well as he fitted our style far better.
Lovren looked a very good player and everyone was talking about him being a leader for us after pre-season.
Can is a talent and one that plenty of clubs were keen on.
Markovic is a sensation. He's got the potential to be an absolute great; at both club level and international level he's been sensational until this season. Pires pitiful in his first season at Arsenal - Markovic has enough talent to emulate him and is worth waiting on.
Lallana was excellent last season. Putting the price aside he was a really good signing and one who can really help us.
Moreno and Manquillo - half the forum were creaming themselves over these two during the early stages. They're both really good players and, potentially, great ones.
Origi - looks an absolute beast. The fact he can't play with us this season doesn't change the fact we've got a potentially ripping attacker there.
Lambert is the black horse. I know some think there's no place for it but I thought it was good business bringing in a local lad. He was signed to be a real 4th striker; he's always been decent and could be counted on to give his all and just love the fact he was at the club.
And if the players with this potential fails to click.. Then that can only be down to the manager and his coaching staff
Actually, no it can't. It may be all down to management and coaching, but there are always other factors. There is hugely increased pressure playing for Liverpool having come from Southampton, or Swansea, where you play every game and are a vital cog in the team.
I've no idea whether this is something affecting the new signings but it's quite possible.
I would buy this argument if it was one or two players, but it is all of them!!
One or two? You could well be talking about Lovren, Lallana, Lambert and Markovic here. But then there's also the possibility that the squad were affected psychologically by the sale of Suarez and the fact we didn't sign a proven world class player to 'replace' him (not necessarily in terms of position, but in terms of the squad having that quality of player, or something close to it).
You asked a hypothetical question, it hasn't actually happened. Are really that impatient?
I Think the sale of Suarez has had a huge psychological impact.. definitely. But then that should not really be affecting the new players should it?..
They should all be trying to stake a claim. Lallana has showed glimpses of brilliance.. but lacks consistency..
The one I am interested in is Can. He was brilliant in the first half against Chelsea. But in the second half he was like a Rechargeable battery that lost its charge.. Faded Quickly... Hopefully that's just a fitness issue.. Who do you drop though in midfield ?
For me Gerrard.. but then we will have no leaders at all on the pitch..
