what a guy

i just noticed there doesn’t seem to be a thread devoted to the fittest man in the squad.

he has been the form player for the entire preseason and carried it on. i’ve always had time for players that run their nuts off and contribute in sweat even if other parts of their game have been lacking (hendo) but this guy has all the tools.

post wirtz signing a lot of us thought this lad would make way but it has been the exact opposite.

i just hope we don’t run him into the ground over the course if the season

this kind of behaviour deserves a thread:

He was a crucial player for us last year that got little respect from many on here. The job last year is just a shit one. He's still doing grunt work and hes even adding worldies.

Grunt work is grunt work, but you say it yourself there - grunt work but adding worldies. Why couldn't he add that last year? Thats all anyone wanted from him, to be more effective in the final 3rd. If he adds it, then wonderful.

He was the key to our press last season, and the way he would balance when to be an advanced runner vs being a defensive support was pretty great. It's hard to see how he cements a single role because Gravy & Macca are better suited as disciplined DMs, and Wirtz arguably the better AM. However he is a beast and I love what he does for our team.

Because that isn't how it works, is it? He added the grunt work last year. He got zero credit for it. It was massively important and contributed to winning a league, and it meant Salah could do fuck all but the worldie part. But every time Salah had a shit game and scored one goal, there was a thread. Every time szobo ran himself ragged and found himself in the box twice and didn't do the right thing he was pilloried. He was in the "learn how to run" phase that finished thiagos career. Wijnaldum was more expressive internationally too.

Its how it works to a degree. But as you say, wijnaldum did the same, but was heavily involved in some important moments for us as a match winner. Salah was rightly called out for bullshit last year, even when doing a madness.

For the the talent ceiling he has, I don't think it was daft to get frustrated by a player playing within himself, or just struggling with the basics at times.

Szob seems more expressive this year, whether thats because hes in the 8, or at RB i dunno. But he looks like he has a point to prove

I don't care where he plays but he's first name on the team sheet at the moment.

Of course he is - he is the only physical/pacey/energetic Midfielder (now RB) we have in the team. Which is why I have been crying out for a physical powerhouse in midfield to the deaf ears of the likes of @StevieM - but does he listen ... NO he does not its always "Slot does not use one in his system" - yeah not on paper but he gets it out of someone else.

I'd love to see what he could do in Salah's position.
You know in that clip - when Salah kicks and loses the ball - well that was rinse and repeat for Salah for the whole game. EVERY FUCKING time he was kicking it against the defender - and wacking it so hard that it deflected so much to start a counter-attack for Arsenal.

He's been great and also a surprise success at right back, not just "doing a job" but showing how the job should be done, which is saying something considering the talent we have and have had in that position. He definitely seems to suit that deeper role, utilising his vision and also the space to run into. He had a proverbial kick up the arse with the signing of Wirtz, but it seems to have invigorated him.

I think I've mentioned this before, but if you look up clips of Trent before the 22/23 season, you'll notice that he actually used to run. Trent worked hard every game, I'm not sure what changed and where the whole big time Charlie attitude came from, but Trent used to defend and track players.

He believed in his own hype and eventually was so far up his own arse he couldn't hear any criticism.

Posted elsewhere..

Ain't it great to have a right back (albeit fill in) that's

- Committed
- Able to defend
- Tracks back
- Can handle one on ones.
- Sprints/tracks back at a decent pace.
- Scores from free kicks
- Taking one for the team (playing out of position)
- Not playing agent games to con a move to another club

Breath of fresh air.

For all the criticism he gets, what he does without the ball isn’t just hard work, it’s freakish and bordering on redefining what we think is possible in terms of effort and athleticism on a football pitch.

Even when Szobo’s not in form, what he gives goes way beyond the usual graft. There are moments it feels like we’ve got 12 men on the pitch. His work off the ball is that relentless that his own players can't keep up or match it. I’ve honestly never seen someone so committed to the game, so willing to run himself into the ground for a club.

I agree but there were others before him like Kante or probably young Miller and Gerrard.

Seriously though, I thought Macca would be the new and improved Milner in running like crazy and being good at everything both physically and tactically. But it seems to be Szobo's role, love to see it

The way he's been playing I'd just keep him at right back for now, even with Bradley and Frim fit and obviously keep him on free kicks. For all the hype around him I never thought Trent was particularly good at them and I mostly recall him hitting the wall more often than not

Trent was fucking deadly from out wide though (crossing).

Made some amazing passes. But they were as likely to go astray and to the opponents unfortunately. Always felt overrated
