I said after the final nothing would make me happier than to see him go from this career low, if not potentially career destroying moment, to come back stronger than ever ... I honestly don't know if he will or not. I don't think he's good enough, but part of me really really wants him to succeed -

Yep, same here.

Fuck him. He cost us the biggest match we've had for 15 years.

I'm a forgiving man Brenners ... and I really think it would be the most amazing story ... from the biggest goat one year, to lifting the premier league and CL trophies the next year ... It's just hollywood'esque - we'd finally have a rival to Jamie Vardy!

I'd like to see things turn out that way too, but I can't persuade myself it's likely. For one thing, although he had an OK season (and actually made a few decent saves in the Final itself) I'm not sure he'll be good enough on a long-term basis, and for another I wonder about his situation within the club overall. That anecdote of macca's about the poor lad sitting on his tod in the Melwood canteen may have told its own story unfortunately.

We will once again win nothing, and it will again be Klopp’s fault for not addressing the most obvious problem we have which is to buy a new GK. I don’t believe there are none available for a decent price. Arsenal just bought a gk for 20m who will be way better than Karius.

I don’t know why he keeps trying to act clever. Now by the time we buy a gk which will most likely be next summer after Karius has another poor season, we will lose Salah. Then Klopp will again replace Salah 6 months or a year later like he did with Coutinho.

I love Klopp I think he’s a fantastic manager. But it doesn’t seem like he will stop the cycle that we are in, which is not addressing the most obvious problems in the team and that will always make the team good but never good enough to win anything. In the end, that will be Klopp’s fault and no one else.

We are 3 players short from mounting a serious title challenge and unless we get ALL 3, we won’t win anything, in my opinion. Also Shaqiri is not good enough for Liverpool and I don’t want him.

1. GK
2. Attacking mid (Coutinho replacement e.g. Fekir)
3. Back up FWD (that can play across the front 3)

I would like a new CB as well as Lovren might not be good enough, but if we get the above 3 players then it should be good enough.

Come on Klopp, just f****** do it.

Too forgiving. He's just not a very good keeper. Even before that he was 'ok', but hardly great. He needs to go.

We're heading into another season with people asking if Ward is any good, how bad is that?

I read on BBC that he made more errors leading to goals in the final than in the previous 30 games. I understand there were near misses as in the Roma game. But all goalkeepers have problems occasionally. Neuer and De Gea looked very poor during the world cup, Allison looks suspect - especially considering prices quoted. So - unless its Oblak it will be a gamble.
If - big if - Karius comes back from this, he will be a stronger person for it.

Well, this is depressing.

Yup.

Maybe by some miracle he'll come good and we'll come out of it looking like the ultimate good guys for sticking with him.

Right now it's hard to see it as anything other than a massive risk.

We need a goalkeeper that everyone can rely on and if he's getting blanked in training by his teammates (which macca suggested happened), it's bad news all round.

The only way i'd be willing to keep Karius is if he's second choice behind a new keeper. Mignolet is surely going so we need at least one new keeper so he may as well be the new number one.

I doubt the lads are blanking him, I'd hazard a guess it's more he doesn't feel comfortable joking & socialising with them yet. Which would be perfectly understandable.

I kind of agree with the sentiment.

However - I’d prefer his potential redemption to be some place else.

I can pay the “don’t judge on one game” and to be fair I thought, prior to the CL Final he had probably deserved a crack next season.

But - those mistakes - that game.

That’s career defining and will haunt him - not least by pressure from other fans and media, the minute he makes a mistake.

Sometimes there’s no way back.

At the very least his recovery/redemption needs to be started out of the spotlight, as a number 2 keeper.

Sell Mingolet. Keep Karius as No 2.... I’m not willing to believe we can’t sign a better keeper than Karius for a reasonable fee.

It might not be the “marquee” keeper we want - but if we go in to next season with Mingolet & Karius, while I don’t agree we’ll “win nothing”, it’s that thing about making the same mistakes over and over again while expecting different results..

We seem to have learned that lesson elsewhere.

Needs to be learned here.

That ball was really moving though (France vs Uruguay). Seems to be a big issue for goalies with the ever lighter balls.

Fair or not, if we get to another final, Karius will be playing his past. The build-up will focus on it (amongst other things), and it's not hard to imagine the opposing players thinking: 'I'm going to try him out with some shots, and shake him up, knock him about, unsettle him early on'. That baggage will be there in a final no matter how well he plays in the previous rounds. That just puts needless pressure on the whole team, and especially the defence. So it's fair enough to tell him that he starts anew this season, to push him to improve, but he still needs to be replaced. It's about the progress of the team, not him.

Whether we get a replacement now or later, as I said, I've no idea and no really strong suggestions once you leave out those who clearly aren't moving anywhere.

But money needs spending elsewhere this summer, too, and the club needs, at least, to show it really means business with the massive funds it now has to buy tried and tested talent.

Good post.

Klopp likes to sign his players early, and he's also very stubborn and tries to act clever when it comes to transfers. I think Shaqiri will be our next and last signing this summer.

In my opinion, only Keita, Fabinho, Shaqiri as our signings this summer, is quite simply another disastrous transfer window. Definitely not good enough to win any trophy and IF we get any long term injury to any of Mane, Firmino, Salah.. we can forget about top 4 as well.

Aye, this Klopp fella doesn't know what he's doing!

Start of last season the hope was a top 4 finish and a cup run. We exceeded that and with a bit of style while we went about it.

We haven't lost anyone of note, improved the midfield and likely to add more. Even if we don't, we're set for another strong season.

I said in a post earlier that I think Klopp is fantastic and in no way was I saying he doesn’t know what he’s doing. That doesn’t mean I think he can win us any trophies with these kind of transfer windows. If we don’t make any more signings or only 1 more being Shaqiri, do you think we can win any trophies? Or if an injury to one of our front 3 are you confident of another top 4 finish?

Courtois would be a brilliant purchase. One year left on his deal, Chelsea in disarray might be tempted by a big deal

Great post, the one caveat there is that goalkeepers are like boxers, to succeed they need a level of confidence that borders on denial. An ability to tell yourself that past beatings were a fluke never to be repeated, that this time you have the winning formula and everything will be fine. Karius, if hes got his head sorted, will already be building up a narrative in his mind that absolves him of any blame.
