I've never "loved" Reina so I'm not bothered, although I completely agree with Bunny et al that he's well out of order.

He's a good keeper though and unless Arsenal come back in for him I suspect he's not really got anywhere else to go. Sucks to be him, huh?
I think after torres my days of loving or trusting a footballer I like/admire are over. players come and go but the club endures.

Kenny Dalglish believes Pepe Reina's distribution is a key weapon for Liverpool.

The Spanish goalkeeper was instrumental in the second of our three goals against Newcastle at the weekend, sending a superb kick down field towards Luis Suarez, who then won a penalty which was converted by Dirk Kuyt.

And Dalglish reflected: "His distribution is fantastic for us. He sees things, he's sharp. He made the second goal against Birmingham last week and he's done it again.

"It's important that he can pass the ball for us. If the opposition close up he can hit it long and if they back off he can knock it short."

Dalglish also had words of praise for Suarez.

The January signing put in another all-action display against the Magpies, claiming his third goal in a red shirt by finishing a lovely team move at the Kop end.

"He just enjoys playing football," said Dalglish. "His style is very pleasing on the eye and his ability is fantastic. He gets as much joy out of someone else scoring as he does his own goals. That's fantastic for us.

"We said when he came that we were pleased to have him and that he'd be a real asset - and he's proved that."

Kenny seems to be bigging up Pepe in the media a hell of a lot these days.
I wonder is he trying to convince him to hang around?

I think he 'bigs up' everyone pretty equally, with obvious results.

He certainly wants to credit the players as much as possible, and constantly looks for the positives. Hodgson's dealings with the press in this regard were disastrous- Glojo, Cole, Torres and others were damned with faint praise, or openly criticised. If Dalglish is to take his players to task, he 'll do it in the Liverpool way, smiley face to the media, and kick arses behind closed doors if needs be. I've no doubt the players respect that immensely.

Lamentable effort.

Just saw this posted on twitter. 🙂

Pepe Reina is relishing working under Kenny Dalglish at Liverpool next season.

The Scot's return to the Anfield dugout on a full-time basis has been hailed by both fans and players alike with hopes of a fresh assault on the Premier League's top four.

Reina has revealed that he is excited at the challenge that lies ahead with the Reds next term despite previously harbouring misgivings towards the end of last year, during Roy Hodgson's tenure, about what the future held for the club.

"I am looking forward to next season,†declared the Spaniard.

“We have had excellent news on Kenny's contract, Steve Clarke's and all of the technical staff. We are heading in the right direction and we are optimistic.

"I have always said [about next season]. Of course there was a bit of doubt back in December and January because we were not even close to where we are now.

"I think by making the right steps and taking them, we can all see the difference between now and then. That's why we are now optimistic about the future and are looking forward."

He added: "We all have smiles on our faces now and hopefully it will be for long. Of course, we have to be calm because we know how hard it is to compete with the big teams out there.

"Fifth position is not the one that belongs to Liverpool - we aim higher and hopefully next season we can finish higher."

Dalglish's permanent appointment has delivered an added boost to Liverpool with Europa League qualification on the horizon with Sunday's visit of Tottenham offering the chance to secure fifth place during their final home game of the season.

"We are all looking forward to next season, but we have to finish the job on Sunday,†insisted Reina.

"By winning we will mathematically be sure of fifth and that is our target - to be beat Tottenham, make sure we get into Europe for next season and then get some rest, which I think we deserve as well."

Pepe has nothing to explain. He has never said he would stay if the club was in the wrong hands, he has admitted there have been sad times in the past. But why would he have to deny quotes? He could well have said those things, but he also may have said more that was left out of the interview? Surely he deserves the benefit of the doubt that he is still here, he signed a five year contract and he is saying only good things abou the club, the manager, the owners?

Ive seen players ripped apart on here, told to fuck off, hope to get injured etc and one player who on the pitch has always been impeccable......

Oh never mind. Haterz gon hate.

I still *heart* Pepe.

And i dont believe he ever wanted to leave.

Finally Pepe gets it. Owners are gone, Hodgson is gone. FSG get managerial choice right and it's now heading for areturn to former glories. Took him a while you know, because he wasn't a Liverpool man in the 70's and 80's and doesn't know about the King.

PS: he's more loyal than most foreign players. That I will give him.(But he did make those dodgy comments). Waves Flag!
Lets just (for the sake of argument) say that he made this comment:
'I could never say never....BUT it would be something i would hope never to do, if liverpool were to decide they didnt want me or for some reason i had to leave and only Manchester wanted me and offered me the chance to play champions league then with heavy heart i would go there, same with real madrid, but if you ask me, i would say i am happy here and have a contract for five years and i hope to stay beyond that'
And then the press trimmed it to make a story? Is that not feasable?
Of course it is, because thats what the press do. ALL THE TIME. Thats their MO.

Im not saying that is what happened, im just saying Pepe deserves the benefit of the doubt. He isnt being given it.
In our worst summer ever he signed a FIVE year deal, when his bessie fucked off he did nothing, he has never handed in a transfer request or said he wants to leave. He may have said that he expects us to honour commitments made to him, and maybe we are now doing that. All we hear from pepe is positive.
I dunno, i seriously think that the Alonso, Mascherano and Torres things (maybe gerrard too) have made us WANT to be distrustful and expect the worst? One little nugget of negativity and its all 'Oh what a suprise......what a cunt........did you see him not smile when we scored.......'
If the man hands in a transfer request than the love ends for me, but other than that i
not taking a half arsed red top campaign as any statement of intent.
Pepe stays.

Oncy, it was a radio interview and we have the recording. It was pretty unambiguous.

Anyway, he's a great keeper but I'll always doubt him now and I don't have any affection for him. He's my 11th favourite red on the pitch at all times (except when we have a player sent off, then he's my tenth favourite).

He fucking said that shit, Andy Bell, and if he didn't (but he did) he DID need to make a statement to correct things.

I'm glad he's staying but don't act like Pepe's blameless and people didn't have a right to be fucked off.

I spent the best part of 2 years being a Mad Dog Wolverine at anybody who suggested that Torres was going to Chelsea.

That last Friday in January changed everything for me.

I'll be happy loving The Dirkilizer and the rest of 'em can do whatever.

I have no isss with the ambiguity of the interview.

I can firmly believe he refused to rule out going to the Mancs;but I don't care.

What I care about is whether he stays and does his best.

Riiiiiiiiight !

From the Gaurdian.

José Reina, has said his future is at Anfield and that he believes Liverpool are heading in the "right direction" under the management of Kenny Dalglish.

When Dalglish, who on Thursday signed a three-year contract to become permanent manager, was brought in on an initial temporary basis in January to replace the sacked Roy Hodgson, the situation at Anfield looked bleak. Liverpool were 12th in the Premier League, only four points above the relegation zone.

Fernando Torres then secured his £50m transfer to Chelsea, and it appeared his Spain team-mate Reina would be next out of the door.

But, in just over four months, the 28-year-old goalkeeper has been persuaded by results on the pitch and a change in atmosphere that he can still fulfil his ambitions at Anfield.

"I am looking forward to next season. I have always said [that] – of course there was a bit of doubt back in December and January because we were not even close to where we are now," Reina said.

"We have had excellent news on Kenny's contract, Steve Clarke's [who also signed a three-year deal as first-team coach] and all of the technical staff. We are heading in the right direction and we are optimistic.

"I think by making the right steps and taking them, we can all see the difference between now and then. That's why we are now optimistic about the future and are looking forward."

Liverpool are now fifth in the table and victory over Tottenham on Sunday at Anfield will secure Europa League football for next season.

Liverpool's recent form has prompted talk of Liverpool being able to mount a title challenge next season – a scenario which would have been met with ridicule at the turn of the year.

Reina is confident they will improve but will not get carried away. "We have to be calm because we know how hard it is to compete with the big teams out there," he said. "Fifth position is not the one that belongs to Liverpool, we aim higher and hopefully next season we can finish higher.

"We are all looking forward to next season, but we have to finish the job on Sunday. By winning we will mathematically be sure of fifth and that is our target – to beat Tottenham, make sure we get into Europe for next season and then get some rest, which I think we deserve as well."
Im not 'acting like hes blameless' im suggesting that i trust Pepe more than the press. And a denial would have made it worse for me.
I dunno if he said that shit, or even what context he said it in, and im not arsed. The fact is promises were made that were broken as Stevie and other players have mentioned.
The americans (by the end of their reign) had presided over a fucking shambles where the likes of Alonso and Mascherano were being sold and Voronin and Poulsen being brought in. We went from being top 4 challenging to bottom 4 with Roy in charge and at that time the future of the club in doubt. This after being told investment was coming (as we all were) by Tom and George. He had every right (as one of only three world class players left in thw squad) to say he was pissed off and/or never say never to leaving and getting the fuck out of dodge and going any-fucking-where. He wasnt employed by the fans he was employed by the club who had LIED to him to get him to sign a new deal. Maybe he said those things IN context, if he did then it was ill advised but IF Tom and George had stayed and we had continued on the downward trend we were on, then ill be honest i would forgive world class players getting the hump and fucking off.
The reason im pissed off with Torres is that he saw the bright new dawn but used the past regime as an excuse to leave like a chief. Thats precisely why im willing to give Pepe the benefit of the doubt, hes seen things change and said fair enough, promises were broken but thats in the past and i like where we are going and want to fight to get us there (in the process miss two years o champions league football) then i say fair enough. We all said some things we shouldnt have but i for one will love Pepe pulling on our shirt next year, and will only remove this love i have for him if he does a Torres.
Hopefully his concerns are being addressed and he can see out his career here winning medals.
