Journalist David Lynch has admitted he would be surprised to see Curtis Jones sign a new contract at Liverpool :
🗣 “I’ll almost be surprised now if he signs a new contract."
🗣 "This interest has got out there, and it is being clearly welcomed by the player."
🗣 "I just think it’s pretty terrible for Liverpool. He’s your only Scouser in the team now."
🗣 "You’ve developed him since he was seven or eight. Is there really not a world where you can give him a contract he’s happy with?”
Isn't it the same with every player? Regardless of where he's from? The club puts a salary value on that player - if he wants significantly over that amount then there is not going to be a value both parties can agree on. For Jones more than likely he'll not get close to what we are offering anywhere else (even if it is substantially below what he/his agent are negotiating for). He'll never get close to it in Italy for example.
For Jones the decision is simple, he knows he's a bit part player (but still a valuable part of the squad ). He is now in his prime (25) and entering his best years. Does he stay to compete, knowing that we are prepared to pay for the best out there (that will come here)? Or does he fancy a change of scenery a=with less competition for a starting berth?
He won't go to City/Arsenal, in which case for the PL he's already in the best place. For CL ditto, no club with better chances will be in for him. He could however go abroad and win medals in a minor league - but that's risky adn TBH worth less unless you still have a realistic shot at the CL or just want the lifestyle (warm, fun, interesting and different to that which you've expereinced so far in your life), but then it's not about the money.
2024/5 2438 mins (17th ranked at LFC by mins)
PL 33 games (1,711 mins)
CL 8 games (352')
EFL 5 games (375')
2025/6 mins (so far ranked 12th by mins)
PL 21 games (1,091 mins)
CL 6 games (382')
EFL+others 3 games (218')
So if he wants medals and to play at a top club - he's already in the best place. He's also on course to play more minutes than last season. Added to which it's his home town club and he's valued, one of our core squad members, even if not a starter.
IMO he'd be a fool to leave now.
