Exactly. No-one is saying he's worth the £20m. Well no-one except the voices in Ross and Ryan's heads who are trying to convince them that all the lemmings are.

depends on what you class as a 'shit deal', I think 20m (don't think the fee IS 20m) is over paying but at the same time I absolutely think we needed a left winger, so the bottom line is I do think it's a good deal as he is what we need.

The main thing is people rate him differently so people think the difference between his value and what we paid ranges from 3m to infinity million
 
We're defo overpaying, I've already said that.

However we're clearly fucking minted. When it's obvious to all concerned that you're loaded it becomes hard to bargain.

On top of that, as I've said a million fucking times, left winger is the hardest position in footy to fill with quality, therefore you pay a premium. British/homegrown players have now got a 25% minimum premium on top of that.

Those factors combined mean it's pretty fucking obvious to sign a quality British left winger you're gonna pay more than you might want to.

The question is if there's any value. I think there's value in paying 5 million more for a player rather than have no quality LW for the 20th year running.

Spidey assists are a crazy stat to make any sort of definitive judgement on, but if you think adding 10 assists is the key to sucess, go and have a look at the players who have topped the assist stats for the past three or four years and see were any of them ever available for less than 20m.
 
Last year we started the season with Hicks, Gillett, Hodgson, Konchesky, Jovanivic *, Poulsen *. This season we start with John Henry, Kenny Dalglish, Henderson, Adam, Downing, Carroll, Suarez.

Not one person I have read in this thread thinks that Downing's price is a good deal so calling us "fucking mental" is a bit over the top Ross.

Most of us who welcome the signing just think that we have progressed significantly over that year. And most of those who think that way, are also realistic about the players that are available and actually want to play for us. We see it as a progression, a squad improvement that hopefully, first and foremost, will at least get us back in the CL places.

* Im assuming that both those jokers will be off our books by the start of the season.

At the price it's never going to be a good deal financially but we can obviously afford it. It all depends on what a good deal constitutes in other ways. Does it improve the team? Yes, because we have fuck all else on the wings apart from square pegs in round holes. Does it improve it enough - I'll let you know mid to end of next season. It's pointless debating what else is out there and how much they would potentially cost as we have what we have now.

I certainly won't worry about it until the end of the transfer window at least. I don't think we say it's been worth it or not until we see who else we do/don't sign and what he brings / doesn't deliver to the team next season.

Downing scored 7 in the league last season, the best league in the world.

Mata managed 8 in la liga.

downing got more assists than Mata.. So, some of you are happy for Mata to be signed as he's continental and capable of stepovers but not the more successful Downing?

If Downing scores 10 next season and makes 20, I'd be happy with that. He'll consistently turn up, far too many of our team didnt last season and I believe he'll be a big contributor in our push for a top four finish.

This is what really fucks me off. Most of us have reiterated time and time again that we don't think the price is fair. Pick out the parts you want to pick out though.

And yeah, if I could think of a few posters who seem to like pulling up old posts and old arguments, it's you guys who I'd think of first, it's a pretty sad claim to fame really and hardly an endearing quality.

I mean, it's not like any of you are ever wrong about anything. Are we still keeping things tight Ross?
 
downing is what we need and that's all I care about which is the long and short of what I'm trying to say.
also downing is one of the best crossers of the ball in the league and carroll is one of the best headers of the ball I've ever seen...
 
20 million is over the top. 15 million would be good business. Anything in between is subjective.

I agree. I'm delighted with the signings and to be honest i still feel there are a few more to come.

Course it is, and it's the usual culprits with the 'I told you so's' before the lad has even signed on the dotted line. Worse thing is, if the lad does well I doubt many of us would stoop to the same levels of one-upmanship, because it's kids play and FUCKING SAD.

8-10 million would be a steal when we have to pay 35 million for Carroll and 18million for Henderson!
