I Moustache You a Question

Just wanted to air some love for this kid. He's already displaying all the right attitude and is going to be a monster for us.
He just turned 21 years old and has been playing in a very encouraging fashion. He plays with aggression, energy, and adds a bit of hardness back to a relatively soft midfield. Looks like he's done a lot of work on his fitness and has really taken his chance when Lovren faltered.
Fast becoming one of my new favourite players - and is restoring my faith in Rodgers signings over the summer (Can, Markovic, Lallana, Moreno - all of them can now rotate easily into any Saturday XI. As can Sakho.)
Starting to feel positive about the rest of the season and our chances to have a real go in the 2015/2016 season.

Whilst his future is probably in midfield, his ability to make those defence splitting passes from the back is a potent weapon and makes us more unpredictable as an attacking force. He's clearly also got potential as the deep-lying CM. He obviously has defensive talent, and has the range of passing to operate there. Long way to go, but he has loads of strings to his bow. He's going to be ace for us.

To paraphrase Rodgers, I hope this guy plays for us for years. He's just going to get better over the next five years and he will become a truly world class footballer. The kid's got the lot. And you can't go wrong with the German lads.

There had been one or two slightly worrying indications in the recent past that Can might be a bit of a big-time Charlie, not so keen on covering the hard yards, so it's great to see him beginning to dispel those and looking like the real asset Sami Hyypia said he'd be. He needs to stay in this vein of form long-term, but if he does and keeps on improving we've got ourselves one heck of a player.

What surprised me the most is that he actually has a bit of speed as well. Much faster than I thought he would be. I see a future for this kid further up field than DM as well. I think he could compliment the creative midfield with Lallana and Coutinho. He looks to be a great all-round player and that is so rare these days - and extremely valuable.

Massive fan, I echo all the praise in this thread for him. Maybe it's not the way Rodgers will play him, but long term I can see him playing a similar role to what Alonso played alongside Mascherano, he's calm on the ball and knows how to pass it, both short and long, and his ability to carry it forward and drive with it, would just be a bonus in that position. Really impressed with what I've seen so far.

Yes, that would be the obvious position. Agree. He looks to be a bigger goal threat than Alonso was and if he can emulate the assist rate we are on to a winnner. A really good partner for Lucas (Or whomever) but it presents a problem with Henderson if he is to be used there as a starter. Hendo wide isnt working that well IMO.

Could Can/Hendo have a chance or does it lack quality defensively?

I don't think it does. While neither of them is a Mascherano where the defensive stuff is concerned, both are good all-rounders and I'm sure we could make it work, though it would take constant practice. It wouldn't surprise me at all if that kind of set-up is what Rodgers is actually aiming at.

My major concern is the positional awareness. I know I keep yapping about it but watching Lucas at HM/DM when we are off the ball is really a pleasure for me. He tracks just right and release the player to the back 4 or across field at the right time. He closes space and applies pressure at the right time. All this makes him easy to play with and it's makes the back 5/4/3 tick. He can partner most players and it would work - defensively that is. On the ball is another matter.

Nobody does this better than Lucas in our current squad - as unsexy as it is it's great value and the reason we win 50% more of our matches when he starts compared to when he doens't.

My major concern is if Can has that same defensive vision needed to carry the engine room. Hendo doesn't - he is a ball chaser. He needs a true DM at his side to function. Preferably someone who can tell him when to chase and when to cover.

With Coutinho/Sterling/Strurridge/ Lallana and a new ace coming I think this is the most important detail to fix. The engine room issue...

He looks incredibly slow and lacking in agility at times but when he gets going he reminds me of Yaya Toure in that he's pretty hard to stop because of his size and running power.

I think hes far too much of a physical specimen to be confined to the sort of quarter back role Alonso excelled in, it would really be wasting his ability. Long term I think he has the sort of all round game to be become a proper box to box midfielder like Yaya

You're blowing really hard there on Lucas. We should be able to find another player with those attributes that has the physical attributes too. Wanyama/Schneiderlin/Song for starters. Also, you know that a huge reason we've seen this improvement in form has been the removal of Gerrard from the midfield. Pushing him further helps everyone.

Can seems to be okay at passing people off inside the 18 yard box, why couldn't he do it in midfield?
At the end of the day, Can has the tools to play almost any position. And the brains to do it well. I hope we get to keep him for at least his 20's and get the best out of him. I'm sure his position will change with the requirements left by our squad.

I absolutely LOVE Can's incisive through-balls out of RCB – it's such a good additional weapon to have and not many other teams possess this kind of weapon. He might do only once or twice in each game, but just the threat of it creates a sense of uncertainty for opposition defenses, now they know they can never relax while we are bringing the ball out of defense.

I really hope Johnson's return from injury doesn't tempt Rodgers to ever, ever, ever resurrect his experiment with him at RCB. This should be Can's place until the end of the season, if he's fit, and if not, Toure's. And if Kolo is not available, Lovren's. And next season, if we want, we can bring in Wisdom who looks to be nurtured for exactly that role.

The only concern is that I have no idea if he could play the HM part. If we could build around him defensively, you know? I don't really think we have had the stability in the engine room since Alonso left. We had a really good version of a HM before Lucas got his big injury but it takes time to get into the groove and establish the understanding between the players who connect the dots defensively.

We need a major signing for this position. Khedira (?) or something to that effect. I don't think Song would be up to it. 0 goals and assists. It's another version of Lucas and we need more, right? Schneiderlin might be ace but his 0 assists would worry me. 4 yellow cards and 1 red in 16 matches this season seems a bit excessive as well? He has been deployed as a center in all games bar 2 where he played DM. Not the specialist we're looking for?
Wanyama has the same issues even if he is deployed as a pure midfielder and rarely as a HM/DM. 19 shots - 3 goals and 1 assist. Alonso used to clock in about 7 assists in average per season and a about 3 goals during his time here. God only knows how many goals he was actually involved in - but Im guessing quite a few!

We need a Hamann/Alonso type - a specialist who isn't shoehorned but a natural DM/HM. Would love if we could get a player who was an asset on the ball as well as off. They are hard to come by though.

Definitely not Khedira. He's a good player but he isn't too keen on the "water-carrying" side of the job, hence not suited to a deeper role IMO. I know a couple of German footy fans who don't like him because of it, and I suspect it's why he didn't get on with Mourinho when he managed Real.

Why don't you think Song would fit the bill?

I just thought that he is too much Hamann and not enough Alonso. Could be that khedira is too much Alonso and not enough hamann... I would prefer a HM who might contribute going forward. Maybe if you build around two DM's you can balance song. But his assist rate and goals are low to put it mild.

I would love khedira. A wonderful player maybe a little lazy. We should clone him with Lucas...

If it's a system with 2 DM's i certainly wouldn't mind khedira as one of them.
