NOW it’s time for @bluebell’s insightful analysis of the English teams’ struggles in Europe.

Watching Scholes as pundit just reinforces for me what a heap of nonsense it is to see him compared to Gerrard (and Lampard to some extent) as a player. He's just utterly bland, befitting an important cog in the machine who could play nice cross-field passes, but not a leader and driving force like the other two. I don't think I've ever heard him say something that goes even mildly against the grain of the most broad and predictable sentiment of United's fan base's at any given time, let alone something genuinely insightful.

What a week it was, with both Manchester clubs knocked out. Would have been icing on cake if we were still in CL though.

He had a shedload of ability but never fully made it count, and it was partly his own fault for insisting on playing midfield. His distribution was often excellent and he knew the way to goal, but his defensive work was a joke - he tackled with all the finesse of a charging rhino and collected an enormous number of bookings for someone so essentially mild-mannered. Quite early on in Scholes' career Ferguson wanted to turn him into a no.10/second striker and I think he was on to something with that, but Scholes was plainly cheesed off with the whole idea and reverted to midfield before long. Gerrard and Lampard did what they were always good at and became even better at it, whereas Scholes insisted on being a square peg in a round hole for most of his career.

Yes. And he was also one of the worst tacklers there's ever been in top flight football.
