Everton midfielder Aaron Lennon has been detained under the Mental Health Act after concerns for his welfare.

The 30-year-old winger had to be helped by police in Salford on Sunday when he was found at the side of a busy road close to the M602.
Lennon, 30, who has been absent from recent Everton squads with an unspecified injury problem, spoke to police officers at the scene for around 20 minutes.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: ‘Police were called at around 4.35pm on Sunday, April 30, 2017 to reports of a concern for the welfare of a man. 'Officers attended and a 30-year-old man was detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act and was taken to hospital for assessment.’

On Tuesday Everton issued a statement which said: ‘Aaron Lennon is currently receiving care and treatment for a stress-related illness. The club is supporting him through this and his family has appealed for privacy at this time.’

Hopefully he'll get all the help he needs. They probably caught him just in time.

You'd think he'd have had the support to prevent his condition getting to the stage where he tried to top himself. Then again, I imagine diagnosis of this kind of problem isn't very sophisticated among the medical support staff at football clubs.

Yeah, I think when you're in that state, there's a bit of a trend in being able to hide it from people. If you can hide it from your family, you can hide it from your colleagues, and that's half the problem with some of these cases. People don't know how to reach out, so you end up being insular and keeping it from everyone, which is why it eventually boils over and manifest it's self in a major incident, at least in some cases anyway.

They probably don't but given how he was found and the fact he's been detained under the mental health act - its a reasonable assumption

Plus he was found near a motorway. My thoughts immediately went back to Clarke Carlisle.

That's really awful.
Hope he gets well and soon. Mental illness can be debilitating in its more mild forms, but this seems a more serious than that.

Interesting how people have such sympathy for this but hope Utd players have career ending injuries

Not that I hope any player has career ending injuries, but Shirley (Don't call me Shirley) you can tell the difference between a suicide attempt and a career outside of football? 🙂
