Downing

He played reasonably well last season but in honesty his unfettered plainness due to stubbornly average ability, he aint never getting better folks really... makes me hope to God and the sweet lord baby Jesus we don't sign him.

He isn't especially young, he isn't especially good he isn't especially anything apart from bland.

Spunking twenty million on a prospect in Henderson is good in a way but if it only leaves you looking at the likes of Downing then it's pointless. Somebody said he is a left sided Pennant and that is correct, at least conceptually, he does not greatly improve our quality, we signed Pennant because some bright spark thought putting loads of crosses in for Birmingham is enough to qualify you for a top 4 side.

It would be a curious signing IMO, all the noises theyve made so far were along the lines of we will sign top talented youth and the odd star player paying top dollar if required, Downing is neither and never will be and lets face it barely anybody of us wants him and the reasons are obvious, he isnt all that good.... we need really fucking good.

If all Commoli can come up with after 6 months of looking is Downing then....

I realise we paid over the top for Carrol and probably for Henderson also but it will miss a trick if the club doesn't build on the momentum and feelgood factor at the club and make a statement with a juicy signing I don't believe a wet fart in a lift like Downing is going to animate the team nor indeed make any of us believe.

Fuck it we might as well sign Bentley for the right and truly scare the opposition.

As you can probably tell I still suffer very very much from Downing syndrome. All of you Downing lovers are deep down evil nasty people who should be stopped with your fluffy blind thinking.... quislings....

Anyone who wants Downing is a weedly sneaky secret Man U fan deep down and you rub them car tree air fresheners on as after-shave before a big night out.

FACT.

I'm no "Downing lover" (I'd sooner we signed Mata) but I do think some criticism of him on here, as exemplified by bits of that post, tends to be overcooked. We can't sign galacticos in every position and TBH I wouldn't even want to.

Stewart Downing ranks third in the Premier League for 2011 in terms of goals scored + chances created with 89 behind Kevin Davies in second and Florent Malouda in first.

This surprised me....

Henderson nr 4

We should close this thread just in case it has the same Karmic ripple effect of stating "We will thump west brom 4 nil and really rub Roys nose in it"

Whoever started this thread way back should be banned for a week on a point of principle.

Lets start a Ribery thread instead! or maybe a Robben thread.... we all know we are getting the useless hump so we might as well at least try and kid ourselves.

Commoli is a cunt.

So are FSG.

Fucked my holidays they have the wankers.

FACT.

you know a player is a questionable signing when you need stats to prove the point (he's completed 89% of his crosses etc...)

Quality needs no explanation. "Steady Downing", no thanks.

LIVERPOOL want to complete the £15million signing of Stewart Downing by the end of the week.

Downing has made it clear to Aston Villa bigwigs he wants to move to Anfield and the Merseysiders are trying to get their top transfer targets sealed quickly.

Villa, in a state of limbo until they secure a new manager, will demand nearer £20m for the 26-year-old but are resigned to the fact their star players want out.

Liverpool are anxious not to see a repeat of the Gareth Barry saga three years ago, when Villa were able to resist the Merseysiders' efforts to sign the midfielder.

Kop boss Kenny Dalglish has always favoured Downing ahead of Manchester United-bound Ashley Young.

He sees him as the answer to a left-sided position which has troubled Anfield for more than 10 years.

Downing thought he was heading to Anfield three years ago, only to have a deal pulled at the 11th hour when the Reds opted instead to sign Albert Riera, who had little impact.

England star Downing has two years left on his Villa deal but he is determined not to let the opportunity pass this time.

I don't mind either but no more than 14 mil I also like that allbright or what ever his name is who plays for villa.

The irony of actually needing a twenty million pound winger would be too much to bare. I would hate for Kenny to be the one to spend 80M on the team anf for us still to lack enough quality.... it would fucking suck.

I'd hate to support Villa, they lose Barry and Milner in successive seasons. Now they face the possibility of losing Young and Downing. Bent will be pissed off watching his support cast leave.

What makes me question the potential signing of Downing is the lack of consistency over the course of a season.

The video Hansern posted is impressive, and he did play very well for Villa last season, but i can't recall any other season other than that which he's shown that kind of form on a regular basis.

One of them players that will play out of his skin for 3 or 4 games and everyone will be raving about him, but then he'll disappear for a few months and so on and so forth.

In fairness Downing does possess all the qualities you want/need in a winger...he's got good close control, he's direct, and he can whip in a pinpoint cross.

He just hasn't performed consistently well enough in my view, but if he's a Liverpool player next season, lets hope that changes.

He's not a "sexy" signing, but he can cross, is reasonably quick, can beat a man and links up well with his team mates.

I think he'll do well.

£65M on Downing, Carroll and Henderson...

'Value for money' my arse.

No one really knows how it will turn out. Carroll and Henderson both have a long career ahead of them. It's a massive gamble yeah but we won't know if it's value for money for a while yet.

Yeah but right now we're all scratching our heads aren't we ?

Its not turning out how anyone might have expected it

The transfer window opened 13 days ago Ross, it's not turning out any way yet. I'm happy with who we've been linked with for the most part (including Downing) as long as we get it all right and we sign a bit of a marquis signing in one of the attacking positions. There's a long way to go yet. Henderson only signed so early because he was going away with the U21's, if wasn't for that we'd be basing most of this on what is basically nothing more than paper talk.

That will be colourful indeed, if her avatar is anything to go by!

A lad on RAWK says Villa are very reluctant to let Downing go(particularly after selling Young) and it's going to be tough for us to get him.

Former Liverpool defender Phil Babb has come forward in recommending Stewart Downing as a possible signing for Liverpool, affirming widespread suggestions that Kenny Dalglish must sign wingers for next season.

With the £35 million signing of Andy Carroll, Dalglish accepted that the need for wide options in a bid to provide service for the towering striker. The likes of Sylvain Marveaux, Florent Malouda, Juan Mata and Santi Cazorla have all been linked with a switch to Anfield, but the new American owners have shown a willingness to spend big money on English talent with the £20 million deal for Jordan Henderson.

"Andy is part of our team,” Dalglish claimed. “So is Luis Suarez so we need to get players who complement them. Whatever we need we will go for.”

With the likes of Maxi Rodriguez and Joe Cole offering a lack of width when operating from outside midfield positions, the need for players who get to the byline and provide crosses is more acute than ever.

Stewart Downing has consistently proved his capabilities of provide quality service for strikers that boast a considerable aerial threat. At Middlesbrough, Downing proved the most prolific crosser in the league with 379 over the course of a season.

Solidifying that with several good performances since his switch to Aston Villa, Downing struck up a good understanding with John Carew whilst at Villa Park, offering a great supply line for the 6ft 4in forward.

Downing could provide a similar fold for Carroll, and Babb has insisted that the Englishman could be a real hit if he teamed up with his international team-mate at club level.

“He’s the type of player that Liverpool need,” Babb suggested. “They need width and they need someone that can service Andy Carroll from the wide positions.

“I think Stewart Downing would tick a lot of boxes there.”

As unfashionable as it is, having someone who can actually cross the ball for a player in the box who's actually 'good' at heading the ball is a useful weapon to have and will get us alot of goals. A goal is a goal just like a win is a win. Yeah we need a bit of pace and variation (though Downing isn't slow either) but we also need other options too and will find the need to be direct just as much as we will require the need for a bit of improvisation.

I actually quite like Downing but this has put me right off him

Pennant had the most crosses in the league or some shit at Birmingham before we signed him. Meh.

We flourished under Kenny with a system that made the most of pass and move. I'm curious to see how we're going to balance that out with the type of service that Carroll will obviously need to be successful.
