Marveaux is the other, if there is another.

It would make little or no sense to buy Downing, who will probably cost 12m+ and 80k+ a week, and then keep him as second choice.

If he's being signed it has to be as an immediate starter and I don't know whether he's good enough for that - and if he is good enough now I don't think he will be good enough in two years time anyway.

On first look it doesn't make any sense I agree. However, if we plan on buying two wide players(+Marveaux) with one being real class and another being Downing I wouldn't be too disappointed. He's premiership proven and still fairly young (26) so we'll get a decent amount of the fee back in a couple of years time when he's no longer needed. I'm not overly keen on him but it might not be that bad a signing. The fee (£10m or so) and wages (£60k should be enough if he's really keen to sign) would have to be right though.

Well we do need more options. If he comes in as one of the players replacing Cole/Maxi/Jova then i think we'll get more from him and the side will have a bit more balance. Also helps with the home grown quota to offload Cole and Jones if we go down that route.

Riera really improved us despite being nothing particularly special... we were certainly a better team with him in it than when he was not. Not having an adequate replacement for him has contributed to our decline.

As with most transfers, it totally depends on the Downing's fee if I am okay with this.

Downings a good player but not good enough for us and will cost £15 million plus which is too expensive for a squad player.

I'm not as damning of Downing as some either. He is a very effective Premier League winger - he has good pace, an excellent cross, and chips in with a fair few goals and assists. He helped keep Middlesborough up for a couple of seasons, and now looks like the standout player at Villa. Whether he can make the next step up is questionable, but what isn't questionable, is that he's miles better than anything we've got when it comes to offering genuine width.

That said, I've warned against using our current options as a benchmark in the past. If we were to consider any player who is better than what we currently have as a legitimate target then we could very well end up filling the squad with more average players. We should be after better than Downing, certainly as first choice. If the price was right however, there's no doubt he would improve our squad.

I think Downing is a very good player (he was excellent against Ghana), and I'd say his crossing is making the case for him. I would be interested to see how he got on.

I just about to call him the English Riera, a guy who we really could have done with this season.

Maybe Villa will take some cash along with N'Gog, Ged's bound to fancy that, N'Gog is French after all.

I'd be surprised if Houllier is still there at the end of the season.

Likewise, we need to tie up the deal before then. £3million + N'G'gog, he'd be great alongside Bent. You know you want to Ged.

downing is less of a risk than a winger from abroad, Kenny likes buying local that he has seen play in english conditions.

I would not cry if we bought him, have we actually had a top LW since Digger?

I would prefer young

Between Downing and Lennon, who'd suit us better eh?
[/quote]Neither. They can both suck my dick.
Useless midtable cunts.

Secondeded.

Lennon's tracks through his eyebrows into his hair mean it is a no from me. Downing is a good player, consistently good, without being a very top player. In the Yossi bracket as opposed to the Pennant bracket as some might paint him. Would be an excellent addition to a squad thin on decent wide players.

I rate him more than most, but his injury record is a bit worrying (same as Marveaux).

Downing would be a terrible statement of intent. Forget about the title, forget about CL if this is what we're bringing in.

I hate people that talk about statements of intent. My biggest pet hate.

It's complete nonsense. People talk about how Chelsea made a statement of intent when they splashed out on Torres and it was their way of showing they wanted the CL.

Really all it showed was that a fool and his money are soon parted.

^^^

People have to realise that when we lose Maxi, Jova, Cole, Poulson (please God), not every one of them can be replaced with a Sanchez, a Hazard or whatever. We need a much better squad, and Downing would be an excellent addition.

The other aspect of it is not everyone can be the star of the show, those stars need a supporting cast who aren't going try to overplay their position by attempting to make their own chances rather than chances for our big money stars.

We're clearly not going to be asking Downing to lead the team, were going to ask him to get down the wing and stick decent crosses in for Carroll. By all accounts that's a job he's capable of doing.

Whereas signing Hazard adds a potentially better player to the mix I don't think he'll have as much of a benefit for Carroll
