to be fair dirk played a lot of games through the middle and took penalties.
And is a better player than all the others on that list.

Nani, Silva and the Malouda are much much much much better wingers. Better player is so subjective because position and other stuff comes into it. But come on Dirk scored mostly from striker and so did a lot of his assists come from striker, he is still a not very good winger, who does a job defensively and occasionally scores.

His conversion of chances rate and attempts on target ratio have little to do with his position.

Look at how many shots that shitehawk Nani had and how many were on target, I think Dirk and Malouda are the only two to have more shots on target than off target.

Also, Malouda often plays in a front 3, Young often plays as a striker, and Silva plays all over the attacking line - so the comparison isn't perfect but it's not completely invalid either.

Just as a matter of interest i'd like to know who on here wants Downing to sign for us? I have no idea how you do one of those polls on here....

For me ...I'd prefer we didnt sign him even if we didn't sign anyone else for his position, but i have full blown Downing syndrome still and have bitter memories of people trying to argue for other players signings on the basis of stats.

I want BIG steps forward in class for the first team or whats the fucking point.

£20million to land Downing

Published 23:00 14/06/11 By David Maddock

Liverpool will need to seriously increase their valuation to land Stewart Downing.

The Anfield club were hoping to move swiftly to capture the England international winger as soon as Aston Villa appoint a new manager.

Boss Kenny Dalglish values the player at around £10million, and given he cost that figure when he moved to Villa Park from Middlesbrough, and has only two years left on his contract.

But the Villa board see things very differently, and even though they don’t yet know if Downing will figure in their new manager’s plans, they have indicated any offer will have to be double that figure for them to consider it.

Downing, like team-mate Ashley Young, has decided his future lies elsewhere, and he is keen to move to Anfield after being sold on the Merseyside club.

He is a friend of Andy Carroll, and wants to become part of Dalglish’s revolution, but it seems there is much work to be done if he is to get his his wish.

Young’s imminent departure has put pressure on the Villa board to attempt to keep the rest of their players, and they are prepared to play hard-ball to at least ensure they have the funds to find an adequate replacement.

Young seems certain to go to Manchester United. He is about to enter the final year of his contract, and Villa know they must sell now to try and recoup the £8million they paid to Watford for the player.

But Downing is a different matter, and even though the player is desperate to go, there could be a struggle over the fee reminiscent of the wrangling that surrounded Gareth Barry’s on-off move to Anfield two years ago.

Dalglish will need to offload several of his highly-paid fringe players if he is to generate the funds and clear the wage bill to snatch Downing, but remains confident he will get his man.

£20m for Downing? Get fucked.

He'd improve our squad but for £20m I want better than Downing.

Great.
Now let's forget Downing and go for a proper winger. From abroad. He can be completely overpriced too. That'll still be half the price of his english equivalent.

Tend to agree with people thinking he's average and comparing him with Pennant.

He's not suddenly gonna turn into a better winger just because we sign him. I mean sure, there's been some cases of average players turning good when going to a better team but how often does that happen?

Again Downing is extremely average and I don't think he'll improve us at all.

Aston Villa can take their £20 Million price tag and shove it.

ha ha ha

Look how fucking good Dirk's stats are!
He'll be lucky to be in the starting 11 next year....
*rolleyes*
It's a measure of how far we've come when players like Kuyt don't get in the teablah blah fucking blah...

In what universe is Downing worth £20m? Mental.
The same universe that deemed Pennant at 7M good value.

If I read "he can do a job on the wing" backed up by FUCKING OPTA STATS ONE MORE TIME

They're quoting stupid money because we've shown we'll pay stupid money for players who'd potentially be very good for us but are the moment likely to be average.

I'd laugh at Aston Villa but there's a very good chance we'll pay that ridiculous amount.

Johnson came from Boro, who are in the championship and you'd bum off him.

Go to bed now. Or something.

ASTON VILLA snubbed Liverpool's £12million bid for winger Stewart Downing.

And they have warned Kop boss Kenny Dalglish to "get serious" if they are really determined to lure the England man to Anfield.

The Merseysiders made their opening offer for long-term target Downing earlier this week but it was met with short shrift.

Liverpool are sure to increase their bid to £15m because Dalglish wants the deal done quickly, but Villa are likely to hold out for £20m.

Downing, 26, is desperate to move to Merseyside and the strong likelihood is he will be the next high-profile addition to the Kop ranks.
