I thought he looked good yesterday, and he took his goal exquisitely, however from glancing through the match thread, people didn't seem to agree? Surely he's got to start ahead of Mario, or at the very least alongside him?

I'd say he needs a run of games.

Definitely, it would be criminal to drop him after getting his goal yesterday, which unfortunately is what I expect Rodgers to do. I'd quite like to see him and Mario start upfront though

I thought Lambert took his goal well, he also showed well for the ball all game and layed it off well from the couple of tricky lobbed passes he did receive. Tough being a striker for us at present given the few chances we are carving out.

I thought he had a great first couple of minutes.

After that "purple patch" he reverted to normal.

He's a pretty smart player, better technically than he looks and good at linking other players, but as the game went on yesterday he was a solitary figure trying to close down their keeper, and that is absolutely hopeless. He needs players running around him. Not necessarily beyond him, like Mario, but he needs some teammates to work with. Borini, I'd assume, would work okay with him. We might as well try it.

I feel the same about mario

It's like they give the striker the ball and think "well that's my job done". No runs to assist from sterling, Coutinho, Lallana etc.

I think they give the ball to Mario and think "well that's my job done, there's no point in doing anything else as that fucker isn't going to pass, he's going to blast it from 30 yards out and miss by a mile".

Perhaps he's blasting it because he's got no other option near him

Mario did that at AC Milan didn't he? Slow build up and then when it finally gets to Mario he took it upon himself to try get a shot on goal.

Knowing what we know about Balotelli's personality and playing style, do you really think that's more plausible?
Initially yes. He's at least improved his work rate, perhaps with support he might improve other areas

Hardly like Lambert got support at the weekend so it's hardly like it's just a Mario issue

I think you have a point, but it's not as big as you're making out. The team could be doing more to support him(that's probably always the case), but I'm not sure the support would actually have that much benefit. If they gave him loads of support, I don't think he'd pass as much as you think, and we'd end up scoring more in the long run. I don't think he's the kind of player we should be trying to base our play around.

We need strikers that make our players want to make runs for them, Mario is the total opposite of that.

To be fair at the moment or entire squad looks like players who wouldn't want to run for anyone

Yeah, so what do we do to solve that? We get players that are enthusiastic, team players. Players more like Suarez than Balotelli.
What I dont get is how the rest of the squad is putting in less effort compared to last season

Something deeper is going on than just the inclusion of Mario

That's true, but then Lambert took what chance he got and he had a few more too he probably should have done better with. To me, the difference is that he was getting in those positions to miss. With Mario, he's either shooting from distance or offside.

To be fair, last season when they gave the ball to Suarez and Sturridge it pretty much was job done.

To be fair about it, one of the things you could say about Mario was that he was getting into a position to score. That he didn't make those chances stick has crueled us and him.

Lambert did well IMO. Took his goal beautifully and worked hard throughout. That said, thought he should have had another - but hard to complain in light of what the other strikers offer.

In theory a partnership with Borini might work but I'm convinced now that nothing with Borini will work.

Lambert and Mario is just such an absurd idea it could well give us goals. Nothing else is working.

He's a fairly limited player, but that's 2 goals in 2 starts, and moreso his hold-up play and workrate last night was really impressive.

His attitude's good, he genuinely works hard, he doesn't roll around on the floor for half the night in faux-anguish, and he seems like he is desperately trying.

I can get on board with that.

He reminds me a bit of Michael Robinson. Technically better, but otherwise a similar forward. At least he plays with a bit of purpose, which in these dismal times is something.

Quite apart from the fact Lambert has a fairly decent goal return throughout his career he is entirely the sort of player you need when the chips are down. He has good control, is well motivated and doesn't give the ball away easily and is useful as a target from deep when defending. I think you can rely on him to contribute.

He needs to be given a run of games.. End of..

He is the only striker we have got that looks capable of scoring at the moment..
