Newcastle United expect to complete the signing of the Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey in a £38million deal that could be finalised on Wednesday.
Ramsey,
24, will sign a long-term contract to move to St James’ Park and become
the club’s fourth major signing of the summer. It means Newcastle, who had endured a difficult and frustrating transfer window,
will have spent close to £70million in two days, having completed the £30million signing of the German defender Malick Thiaw from AC Milan on Tuesday evening.
Newcastle were locked in successful talks with Ramsey’s representatives on Tuesday and a deal is now said to be very close.
Eddie Howe, the Newcastle head coach, has been a fan of the attacking midfielder for a long time. Newcastle had failed in previous bids but Ramsey, considered the ideal age by the club’s recruitment team, has
just 12 months remaining on his contract at Villa Park.
Villa also received an approach from West Ham United but Ramsey favoured a move to St James’ Park. The deal will represent pure profit for Villa under the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules, with Ramsey having
joined the club as a six-year-old. He
gained 16 England Under-21 caps while at Villa Park.
The impending deal will be further relief for Howe, who had spoken at the weekend of his concerns about the size of his squad before a return to the Champions League. The double addition of Ramsey and Thiaw, however, will be seen as a potential turning point.
Newcastle have already signed the forward Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest for £55million and the goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton on an initial loan deal with a view to a possible permanent move.
Newcastle’s major concern remains landing potentially two centre forwards, with huge uncertainty remaining around the future of Alexander Isak before the transfer window closes.
They remain keen on Brentford’s Yoane Wissa but there has been no movement yet on a second bid after a £25million offer was immediately turned down.
Brentford insist they want £40million.
Liverpool have yet to formally increase their £110million offer for Isak, who has moved out of his home in the North East and whose agent has said he no longer wants play for the club.
Newcastle’s position on Wednesday remains the same as it has all summer: that the Sweden striker is not for sale.
