Entering a period of squad management with two important games against City after each leg. For me Matip stays at home but the rest is full strength allowing us to rotate more for the home leg.

Ali

Trent (sub early but give him the start to find rhythm)
Konate
Virgil
Robbo

Fabs
Thiago
Naby / Hendo

Salah
Jota
Diaz

i like the two attackers who’ve played in Portugal starting this. And keeps Mane fresh to start against City.

Was thinking the same regarding Diaz and Jota. Both hate Benfica too.
But I can't see Klopp benching Mane for two games in a row.
I think Salah might sit this one out.
Maybe Klopp starts Mane on the right, Diaz on the left and Jota in the middle?

Interesting selections coming up for Klopp. For city we need our best pressing team which will be Fabs Thiago & Naby in midfield and Salah, Bobby + one of Diaz/Mane/Jota.

Exciting week ahead now.

We’ve got to prioritise the City game given the league situation and the fact that they are a vastly superior side to Benfica.

Of course, Benfica deserve some respect but we really have to see this draw for the huge stroke of luck that it is and take advantage to rest some key players. The Portuguese league is the weakest in the knockout stages of the competition and we’ve already put weaker sides out against Porto and blown them away this year.

Rest Fabs, Vvd, Salah, Thiago etc or at least sub them on only if needed.

I'd roll Thiago in some wool and save him for the City game. Dunno if you've noticed but he's missed some big games this season.
City H 2-2
Spurs A 2-2
Chelsea A 2-2

Missed every game in the league cup due to illness or injury.

Thiago's record is pretty remarkable tbf.
2 losses. (Inter and WH)
1 draw ( Chelsea H)
Won the rest.

Made me laugh 😀 but yeah ya get that feeling with him…am really hoping he has a good run of it now ..fingers and toes crossed !!

I'd rest Salah unless necessary. He's clearly tired. We need a fresh Salah against City.

I'd go for Diaz, Firmino, Mane up front.

Alisson

Gomez
Konate
VVD
Robbo

Fabs
Hendo
Keita

Diaz
Firmino
Mane
I reckon Bobby will play next week against Man City so he could sit out this game with Jota in there instead.
I also think that Hendo and Fabs will share the holding role with Fabs probably doing the first sixty before being subbed off for Hendo.
Trent will probably benefit from some game time so right full back might be a share job between himself and Jo Gomez.

Salah needs to find his rythm again, and that comes from playing. A good 30 min cameo against tired Benfica legs could be a good start.

I think you're right about Bobby. However, I think he'll start both games (probably not finish either).

I think it's more likely Trent gets half hour from Gomez too.

Can defo see the benefits of resting for first leg and being full strength against City who won’t have the luxury of rotating against Atletico.

If we do, we should do it properly and leave those who don’t play in Liverpool to save on two travel days. Power move to leave Mo Matip & Thiago at home.

I agree with Brizzle, give TAA the start and bring him off after 50-55 mins for Gomez.
Robbo was not up to scratch vs Watford either, Tsimikas isn't a risk at all.
Mo has to sit this one out (he was crap vs Watford) as does Thiago, no point in risking him, he doesn't go near this game.
Fabs is teflon so probably OK to start.
Naby needs minutes (start if fit) and I can see Klopp starting Ox (at least we'd have a good pressing midfield).
I have to admit that I'd not start Hendo vs City (Fabs, Thiago, Naby) but Klopp will so since he was also shite vs Watford I'd rest him on the bench.
I think our starting 3 vs City will be Mo, Diaz and Jota. So Mane & Bobby start here.

----------------------------------- Ali

Trent ------------- Konate --------- Virgil ---------- Tsimikas

---------------------------------- Fabs

------------ Ox. ---------------------------------------- Naby

Diaz ------------------------- Firmino ------------------------- Mane

We have the squard to take care of Benfica, it's a game of 4 halves. I say bring him on with 35 mins to go on Tue.

I can't see Salah being benched, especially if he's on the verge of signing a contract.
He knows he's being rested for City (and he definitely needs a break) so sitting out this match on the bench isn't going to be an issue for him at all. It would be insane to have him play two emotionally draining matches at the AFCON, come back and play most of the WAtford game, then start him against Benfica and expect him to be at his best vs City. He needs resting.

Hope we are fully prepared and the midfield are ready for this game. Last season we beat Arsenal 3-0 then looked all over the shop against at Madrid.

Losing to Benfica is also not something we should risk.

I can see:

Ali
Gomez Konate VVD Tsimikas
Fab Hendo Jones
Mane Jota Diaz

Use subs wisely - ideally Trent for VVD at 55 mins, Eliott for Fab, Keita for Hendo, and then bring Jota and Mane off later on with the result secure

I agree with you and imagine the coaching staff would be in the same boat.

Salah would probably disagree, he wants to play every minute and score goals. That's fair enough.

So it's probably down to the relationship Klopp has with him, making sure he see's at a move to protect him rather than being dropped.

---------------------------Alisson------------------------------------
----Gomez----Konate----------VVD-----------Robertson---
---------------------------Fabinho--------------------------------
---------Hendo---------------------------Keita------------------
----Mane-----------------Jota-------------------Diaz-

I'd like to see Trent on a HT

Salah plays like he needs a rest and Mane is fresher. Jota and Diaz should know Benfica pretty well, but wouldn't mind Bobby starting either. He's looking quite sharp.

Drawn against Benfica in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, Liverpool make the trip to the Estadio da Luz for the first time in over a decade, to take on a side that lost their first game in 10 on Friday night.
Benfica booked their place in the last eight with a 3-2 aggregate victory over Ajax, with interim manager Nelson Verissimo inspiring an impressive knockout run.
Liverpool arguably hold the advantage in a tie no longer impacted by the away goals rule, as they host the second leg.
And heading into the first leg in Portugal, Benfica have a total of seven players running the risk of suspension for the decider at Anfield.

From Observer:

Great Anfield European nights are the very stuff of Liverpool folklore, from St-Étienne to Barcelona, but for some the best ones end by silencing the home crowd. Sixteen years ago, Benfica’s Simão Sabrosa picked out Pepe Reina’s top corner to quell a raucous atmosphere and send the Champions League holders crashing out in the last 16.

Simão raises a smile as he considers returning to Anfield in 10 days’ time in his suit to find the spot 25 yards out from where he scored. “If I get on to the pitch, I will try to do the same movement; I will take a ball but maybe I won’t score this time,” says Benfica’s head of international relations.

The clubs meet again in the Champions League, this time in a quarter-final first leg on Tuesday. Benfica are underdogs once more but, as in 2006, will be hosts at Simão’s “second home”, the Estádio da Luz, and hoping to create another fiery atmosphere.

“I remember everything,” he says of the opening leg, which Benfica won 1-0. “The atmosphere was brilliant thanks to the fans. Liverpool were the Champions League holders with the same team – they hadn’t changed too much – and when we saw the starting XI, I saw Steven Gerrard wasn’t playing, so we very happy because Gerrard was Liverpool’s best player, one of the best players in Europe. We started to play only thinking to win the game and we played for the win and Liverpool did not play for the win and did not play well.”

A Luisão header gave Benfica a vital lead to take to Anfield, where Liverpool were confident of turning the tie around. The Benfica goal withstood a barrage in the opening half-hour as Liverpool aimed to level things, backed by a wall of noise. Simão, however, made the telling impact when he picked up the ball in the 36th minute and scoring one of his favourite goals, before Fabrizio Miccoli added a late second.

“It was the first time we got the ball but we knew what to do. I took out two players and I scored. After that goal, the team started to breathe as it is difficult to play at Anfield emotionally.

“There was silence from the Liverpool fans but I screamed a lot as I ran to the bench to celebrate with my mates. It was great to hear the 4,000 Benfica fans. We celebrated the first goal a lot and then when Miccoli scored the second goal, it was epic. I will never forget that moment and I will never forget Anfield because after the game we celebrated and after we went inside the dressing room we came back out to celebrate with our fans and also with the Liverpool fans that stayed behind.”

In a parallel universe Simão could have been trying to help Liverpool through rather than knocking them out after the club made an offer to sign the winger in the summer of 2005. “Everything I was thinking was about moving to Liverpool. I remember I was with the national team and my manager called me to come into the office as Liverpool had made an offer. Luiz Felipe Scolari gave me permission to go for talks but when I arrived at Benfica’s office, they said it was impossible and they told me I didn’t have permission to take the plane to Liverpool, so I stayed with Benfica,” the 42-year-old says.

“I am happy but I think most players have a dream to play in Premier League for the big clubs. But I am a lucky ex-footballer because I played in big teams, I played with Benfica for six years – and it’s my team – I played in different countries for big teams. Unfortunately, I didn’t play in the Premier League but I’ve scored against Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea, so I have great memories from playing against English teams.”

Barcelona ended Benfica’s Champions League run in the next round, although the Portuguese club gained revenge of sorts this season by eliminating them at the group stage after taking four points from their two meetings. Benfica have not gone further than the quarters in more than 30 years and few are backing them to improve on that record in the next fortnight despite a 3-2 aggregate win over Ajax in the last 16.

This Benfica are a long way from the side that won consecutive European Cups in the early 1960s. They are redrawing their identity, with Rui Costa taking over as president last year and promoting the Benfica B coach, Nélson Veríssimo, to replace Jorge Jesus at a club who have not won their domestic league since 2019 and will miss out again this time.

Veríssimo’s knowledge of Benfica’s academy, which has produced Bernardo Silva, João Cancelo and Rúben Dias in recent years and is described by Simão as “the best in the world”, will help put the club back at the forefront after being arguably overlooked during Jesus’s tenure.

Doubtless the latest first-team crop will be looking back to Simão’s generation for inspiration, but can they cause another shock? “I hope so,” he says. “I know Liverpool have great players but we also have great players. Anything is possible, like happened against Barcelona or Ajax this season. I think 2006 can be repeated.”
