Stevie G returns. Villa in a bit of form, should be a tasty game.

Nice to have a fully rested back 4 + Fabs. Same as Wolves please.

Ali
Trent - Matip - VVD - Robbo
Fabs
Hendo - Thiago
Salah - Jota - Mane

Some in-form subs in Ox, Origi & now Naby back.

I can’t disagree with that team. Best XI. I’m going which will be my first game post mild flu meltdown palaver. Looking forward to it.

The bad news is I am going to this one.
The last game I managed to get to was the one all draw against Leicester, which was the start of the derailment of what should have been our first title under Klopp in 2019.
We didn't drop points at Anfield for fourteen months after that.
Make of that what you will.

We can draw this one and win every other game this season and win the league.

Villa have really started to evolve. They're more organised at the back, whilst being able to play out nicely and play some decent football. We've got more quality all over the pitch, which should get us over the line, but I reckon they'll only be one goal in it.

Stevie's not a proper red legend unless he rolls over here. Show a bit of fight, maybe even score a late, late consolation in a 2-1 defeat. There's a good lad

Yep - he should make some excuses about saving key players for their game against Norwich on Tuesday.

Spurs have appaz 8 players and 5 staff members who have tested positive for Covid. They've asked the FA to postpone the game against Brighton.
We play Spurs in 10 days or something.

He's won three of the last four now, so I think the fans will cut him a bit of slack even if he, despite best efforts, loses 3 nil?

Stevie sets his teams up to play football, be on the front foot and take the game to the opposition. That tactic rarely works well against us, if you get very fortunate and we have a defensive howler you can get something from the game but for 90% of teams the strategy of going toe to toe with us is suicidal.

He's also playing out from the back a lot and using his FBs upfield as attackers (a la a Klopp team). You'd expect us to take advantage of both of those traits.

Gerrard back at Anfield with Villa
Steven Gerrard returns to Anfield four games and three wins into his time in the Aston Villa dugout. A few interesting statistical themes have emerged from Gerrard’s games in charge: all are among the five Villa performances to feature the fewest lofted passes and fewest attempted long passes this season, and are among the six with the most completed short passes. Somewhat counterintuitively, despite playing fewer risky passes and more straightforward ones, Gerrard has presided over the four Villa matches in which they have had the lowest possession statistics. Still, results have been good, even if they had the good fortune to convert a combined xG of one into four goals against Brighton and Crystal Palace in Gerrard’s first two games. Liverpool’s fans are likely to be more welcoming than their team and, aside from the manager’s pride, Villa’s two games next week – at Norwich and at home to Burnley – are likely to be more significant.

It was interesting listening to Sherwood yesterday. Although he "likes what Gerrard has done" he also went on to say that "Villa have been a bit lucky too, that no Villa player would get in our team and that defensively they have been wide open and so it would be a real shock if they got anything from the game."

If Jota has a niggle, I wonder whether we'll start Origi or Taki up top. Against Mings & Konsa you can see an argument for both - Origi to fight with two strong defenders or Taki to be nimble and agile around them. I'd probably prefer to see Divvy and ensure we have more aerial threat at set pieces from his presence too.

[Neil Jones] Klopp says Diogo Jota hasn’t trained this week after feeling something after Wolves. Could train today. Origi is fine Nat Phillips out for 4-5 weeks with fractured cheekbone.
