Reo Coker was superb, a central midfielder who is a threat going forward, who gets in the other teams box.

Whilst we are waiting for Aquilani, Rafa must play Stevie in the middle and Yossi or Dirk behing Nando. I kept going on about this last season, no team should have two CMs who are defensive, one must be a goal threat, Alonso was sometimes

not all doom and gloom, probably the worst I have seen Torres and Gerrard play in ages.

Rafa must change it for the next month at least until new man is available

He's one of the most repulsive little shitheads in the league. And he hardly had a blinder last night.

true but it showed macca how effective it can be when CM breaks into the box, we are never going to get that playing lucas and masher just as we hardly did with Xabi.

Until new man is fit Rafa must play Stevie in the middle

Well said he must play sg in the middle must i hope that new boy is good god i hope so 8)

wasn't rocked science or especially excellent what reo coker was doing, they just soaked up pressure and when the pacey players broke he just busted a gut to get into the box, totally different with what our players faced, they were present will a wall of villa players and only the most intricate of passes executed perfectly opened them up so someone breaking into the box from deep was neither here nor there.

I'd hardly call Alonso a goal threat, but I do agree that Lucas and Mash arent enough. 442 with Gerrard in the middle with Mash would do just fine until Aquilani is fit.

It was his first game in that position in ages, he's been sulking about not playing there for ages, and he was up for it and determined to put in a peak performance. And still he was underwhelming, apart from late on when there was far more space than usual and he had more opportunities to exploit some frantic and disorganised defending. Put any of our players in the same situation and THEY'D do well (look at Stoke).

If reo fucking cocker showed benitez last night I must not have been in the ground because he was gash. I'm not having him bossing midfield because he was outside his own box more often than not. They parked the bus

Yep. a fucking bottler of the highest order. He wins the penalty and walks to he halfway line as if to say "I'm not taking it...". Just like he did for England U21's.

Not to mention the 50/50's he pulled out of last night.

hmm, he won a pen and nearly scored another by breaking forward from the middle. Its not about how good he is just his intent.

If he had not won that pen we would have drawn or won, our Central midfielders would get a nose bleed if they got into the box

You know you're being manipulative. He only became a threat when we were chasing the game and leaving gaps at the back - and you know full well any of our midfielders, even Lucas, would have looked better in that situation.

Fox, Reo Coker had been playing RB for them all last season as he was underperforming in midfield after a 9.5 million move. Riera tore him a new asshole in the same tie last year. With the sale of Barry he has been given another go in midfield. Yes he won a penalty but he drove into a wide open space, only to hacked down by a silly Gerrard tackle when Skrtel was clearly covering the area. He had plenty of room to roam into and was allowed to make certains run due to the fact we we're chasing the game.

Reo Coker isn't anyting special.

mate mate folks are getting me wrong. I am not saying the player Reo Coker is anything special, I am saying the way he broke into the box to win them the game and nearly score tothers showed RAFA that one of your CMs must do that.

I am fed up with our CMs parading aruond the half way line instead of breakign a sweat to get into the box.

It has to change

I think Fox is making a fair point, even though Coker is pretty average.

Villa stuck to the basics and picked us off well. The break when he nearly scored was a prime example. Nothing special, no patient 30 odd passes before getting nowhere, just direct football.

You could argue that they had the space to do that, but they did the basics well. We probably played 4 times as many crosses into the box, yet theirs proved more effective, and threatening.

We overcomplicated things and looked short of ideas, which has been the case too often over the last few years, and we looked fairly brittle confidence wise, like a team that would just crumble under the right level of pressure, and we did.

I answered it here:

They had space Mark, that sums it up really. The balls they played into the box were more dangerous as it was often an one on one situation. Our ball into the box were contested by a packed Villa defence and easily rebuffed. Didn't help that our 11-14 shots or whatever the figure was were straight at Brad Freidel.

Horrible frustrating game.

They worked the space well though and I thought they stretched us really well by doing what we didn't - playing with width.

Everytime they broke it was down the flanks, with one player running through the centre. It meant that the defence was stretched which left holes for their players to run into with pace to exploit.

It's basic stuff and like I said, sometimes we overcomplicate things by thinking that throwing players forward into the same space will put enough pressure on to eventually count. Sometimes we have to be a bit more cleverer than that and have a plan B and a bit more variation about us.

Not every goal is about picking out the perfect through ball ala Arsenal.

They stretched us, or we stretched ourselves? We were chasing the game. That's the time when the Reo-Cokers of the game start looking good.

I wonder if Rafa actually tells Lucas to get in the box or does he ask him to stay on the edge or just behind.

When you have one striker like us surely a central midfielder breaking past is vital, maybe not as vital if you have two out and out strikers

I know what would work.........dreaming.........

..kuyt............masher.....gerrard...........riera

.................villa...................torres...................

spare a few £40 million Tom's????

Reo Coker is average at best.

The problem with our midfield is that neither Mascherano or Lucas are good enough passers of the ball. Its not just an ability to play ranging passes but its also the ability to see and play the pass quickly rather than having extra touches or not having the confidence or ability to make the pass. We just cant link up with the 3 and so consequently either Gerrard drops back and/or we get outnumbered in the final 3rd and it all breaks down.

We need the fullbacks to both push on and we look most threatening when Johnson (in particular) and Insua overlap and get forward. I think with Aurelio in, we'd be even more effective.

Lucas can and does get into the opposition box. Watch the first goal v Stoke again - who passes the ball back to Gerrard before he pulls it back for Torres?

I don't necessarily disagree about the idea of playing Gerrard in CM, but the problem last night was not the formation, nor was it Lucas. Where the fuck was Kuyt all match? He and Johnson should have tortured Nicky Shorey, yet they barely even troubled him. We just played really badly and gave them a two-goal headstart.

One of the lads said the same thing just before kick off. Shorey should have been taken to the cleaners yet he barely put under pressure.

Reo-Coker? Fuck me.

Petrov was and is the star of that midfield.

would have expected you to not read the thread properly as you are still crying over your ashes

CM that gets in the box = subject

Reo Coker being excellent <> Subject
