I have a problem with Downing. Average winger, doesn't score much, doesn't beat players, doesn't provide enough crosses, lumbering around on the pitch like a fucking idiot against Norwich and an overrated English player.

I am now comparing him with our lovely ex-winger Antonio Nunez. It is still early to judge based on the stats but with Glock it is never too early.

Antonio Nunez - Played 27 games - Scored 1 goal in League Cup Final.

Stewart Downing - Played 9 games - Scored 0 goal.

So now can Downing beat Nunez's record? Can and will he score more goals?

I'd expect a 20 fucking million winger to play well and at least provide something extra that we needed on the flanks but i was left disappointed with his average performance for all the 9 games he has played in.

Kenny has a lot to answer.

Is this your worst ever thread Glock? Its up there with the "best" of them thats for sure. Can we do a follow up with Enriques goalscoring vs Steve Harkness?

Seriously? Seriously?

Look boy when you start posting something worth debating, then we debate. Until then, go Genera Chat. DO YOU HEAR ME?

Carry on children.

Jesus Christ someone phone an ambulance!

Someones had an abortion in the football forum

downing should have a few assists, as a team we can't finish for shit.
for instance v manu that cross for henderson was on a fucking PLATE.

Plus one for Kuyt against United. Plus a header that Carroll missed against Wolves. Plus a header Suarez missed.

He'll create goals. It will happen. He was poor at the weekend mind.

As shit a thread as this is, I think I'd rather have Nunez + 18M to spend in Jan than Downing.

The thing about Downing that grates me the most (and there's competition for that accolade trust me) is not who he is, but who he should be.

i.e. Juan Mata. Or somebody fucking quality who'd have fit into our system. Watching David Silva play makes me weep out my eyes and cock he's that fucking brilliant. He should be playing for us.

Instead we got simple Stewart. Who was bought not because he was Spanish and sex on a football but because we needed somebody to run down the wing and corss the ball onto Big Dunc's head. Which he hasn't done yet. Because he's not that good, and because that type of football isn't for us, but for fucking Ireland under Jack Charlton or something.

It's who he should have been.

Yes, we tried. He didn't want to come of us. Next player of fucking quality? Ashley Young? Sorry, he didn't want to come to us either. Hazard? Nope, no chance (and now Real Madrid). You get the point. There wasn't something of 'fucking quality' to buy that wanted to come, so we basically (it seems) wasted the money.

I hope he turns it around and becomes a bigger contributor. I hope you still do too.

Can people stop having a dig and either post on topic or not at all?
Glock the last week or two has tried to start a bunch of threads and spark some debate and its the same responses every time.
If Ryan had started this thread '18m spend and all I got was this lousy Antonio Nunez' no one would have said shit.
Please can you either post on topic or leave alone if you think the thread is THAT shit.

And glock I think Nunez was better.

Completely agreed.

The same people who were signing the praises of Downing all summer are now avoiding the question at hand.

I didn't want Downing at all but he's better than Nunez.

I'd love to have the option to reinvest the money again. Same for Carroll and Henderson too actually.

Mulligan.

And the same people who were banging on about signing Mata, Hazard (insert name of unobtainable mega star here) still are.

Downing is looking like a waste of money at this moment in time (like quite a few of Kenny's signings) but I'd give him til the end of the season before writing him off.

I can't remember where I stood (Ryan or Ross can dig it up if they want), but I'm not ready to become insane (Nunez is better than a player who's been a consistently good winger in the premier league) and is struggling mightedly. I don't know if it's small fish/big pond syndrome, or that he's really not that good, but I'll give him until the end of the season before I give up or say, "I guess it was a bad patch."

Time will tell ... but until then, I guess these lovely threads will be a regular item. Maybe we should just sticky this one?

It's a bit hard for him to cross onto Big Duncs head when Big Dunc isn't playing. And one could argue that had Big Dunc entered the fray against United, he'd have been on the end of those crosses, instead of Kuyt and Super Jordan.

They played the first half dozen games together Mark. Don't act like the last two games have been the norm.

Fine i'll get involved.

I wanted downing and still think he's not been as awful as people are making out. Unfortunately he's not the type of player who'll make something out of nothing that i hoped he'd be when surrounded by better players. He should already have a handful of assists and he had more composure he would have had a couple of goals.

Its all well and good slating him because he hasn't assisted carroll yet. So what. Carroll has hardly played with him for any decent level of time to get an understanding.

Oh and oncey, if ryan or you had started this thread i would have called you on it. Its fucking bilge. Even if it was a "we should have bought carzola" or something like that.

People are focusing on downing because he cost 17 mil. Fine. We paid too much. I said that at the time myself. Why is downing getting the brunt of it this season though? Theres been a few players who haven't performed yet to anything close to a decent level. Yet they get overlooked as usual because of their previous standings. History means fuck all if they don't perform now. Downing has at least teed up people this season only for them to be wasteful.

No they didn't. When I said the other day that Carroll has started 7 games in 7 months it wasn't in jest, go check the figures.

I will avoid the troll in this thread. You know who you are. I will post something in General Chat soon. You can troll all you want there.

As for this discussion, we signed a fucking proven Premiership winger who just had the best season(by his standard) of his life as a footballer with Villa last season and because of that i expect more from him.

Someone blame the striker e.g Kuyt, Carroll and Suarez for not scoring the 'assist' which Downing provided? FUCKING WHAT??? Do you fucking know what assist is?? Bloody hell.

I am comparing him with Nunez as Nunez is the only player that i can think off suitable for the comparison.

And i forgot to mention, Nunez has a Champions League medal with us.

This season in the league, Carroll has 4 starts:

Sunderland
Arsenal
Spurs
Everton.
[/quote]You cant count the Spurs game.
3 PROPER starts. 2 wins 1 draw 1 goal.

Of course people know what an assist is. But if the ball is put on a plate for a tap in or close range header it SHOULD have been converted. Bellamy, kuyt, henderson and others have all been wasteful from excellent crosses.

If our strikers can't convert simple chances then what the fuck is the point in lambasting the players who are DESIGNED to set up those players?

Since (including) the City game he's made 7 starts and scored three. There might be issues over him, there might be issues about him being good enough, fitting the system, but this is Aquilani syndrome. "The Downing/Carroll combination has failed". No, it hasn't even been given a fucking go.

Could argue carroll mught have scored against spurs if suarez didn't get on the ball from an offside position..

if i'm remembering it right

In every single game he's played for us he has put in crosses that could or should have been converted. In the first half on Saturday I counted at least four crosses, none of which were attacked. Saying that Downing is worse than Nunez is crazy.

And incidentally Ryan, when are you going to get it into your head that Mata and Silva never wanted to sign for us. Fair enough you can say we paid too much for Downing ( I think everyone agrees with that), but we were never going to get those players.

from downing's point of view he must be thinking he has to give the attackers the ball with an open goal to aim at before he gets an assist. our finishing is fucking diabolical, the chances with fluffed this season isn't even funny anymore.
