Edwards and Hughes are the ones pushing him out. They WANT the deal to go through, despite what they say publicly.

I think that is fair. Presume we didn’t value him to the level he thought he was. Very few players we have renewed worthy neared their own terms like Salah and Virgil.

He is no Mane but his contributions are a bit underrated on here. We will miss the attitude and drive he bought to the table. At the same time, previously we gave one contract too far or kept them for a year too late for a couple of players and paid the price. If we can nail his replacement, this might be a win win for everyone. Bundesliga will be gentler league for Diaz as his physical abilities decline.

Liverpool have agreed to sell Luis Díaz to Bayern Munich for £65.5million (€75 million) after it emerged that two attempts to extend his contract had failed.

Díaz has been granted permission to leave the club’s pre-season tour in Tokyo, Japan, and undertake a medical with the German champions, which has been scheduled for Tuesday. A four-year contract, with an option for a further 12 months, has been proposed.

Bayern’s proposal, which is inclusive of add-ons, represents an improved bid of about £7million on their initial offer, which was immediately rejected.

Liverpool had not wanted to sell Díaz, resisting his initial attempts to leave in the summer of 2024 to ensure he played a role in the club’s Premier League title success last season.

However, the player and his representatives have continued to push for an exit when two rounds of contract negotiations were unable to broker an agreement.

It is understood that there was an insurmountable gap between the offers pitched by Liverpool and the demands made by Díaz’s agent for his client, who had two years remaining on his deal.

There had also been interest in Díaz from Barcelona and the Saudi Pro League, but Bayern have been able to match the Anfield club’s asking price.

Diaz cost £39million rising to a potential £50million when signing from FC Porto in January 2022. However, just over £3million in add-ons have been triggered since his arrival.

He was left out of head coach Arne Slot’s match-day squad for the 4-2 friendly defeat by AC Milan on Saturday and his departure will help balance out some of Liverpool’s spending this summer.

Slot has spent about £290million on Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Hugo Ekitike.

The fee for Díaz follows the £60million brought in through the sales of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jarell Quansah and Caoimhin Kelleher, and there is the prospect of more outgoings.
