Pre Match Pre Match - Atletico Madrid (H) - CL - Wed 20:00

First CL game of the season, home under the lights. What do we think?

I personally think Slot will have one eye on Everton but this will mostly show in his subs. I think he'll continue Kerkez who he will give a massive kick up the ass, and likely prepare Robbo to be fresh for Ev.

It's going to be the same team that started against Burnley, except Macca because of that horrible tackle.

So Brizzle's line up is correct.
Isak will get 10 mins, which is right.
Salah will play 90.
Wirtz will be subbed for Chiesa when we need a goal.

Edit: Wait, Mamar - vili? Why?

It's gonna be Ali obviously. He was having a BBQ during the Burnley game.

Finally got a ticket through that shitty, stinky, dump of a ballot for this 1.

Getting your seat pre-allocated is kinda bullshit too but for £9, I guess I can't complain too much.

If Salah is initially named in the XI but is then replaced shortly before kick off, you'll know the reason why.

I'm expecting Frimpong to start. No clue why, but I can see it. Probably kerkez, as I wouldn't trust him in the derby, so that's robbos.

Midfield picks itself. As does the forward line.

Salah needs bombing out the side and told to buck his ideas up. Kerkez the same.

Isak won’t be in the squad.

That's what I'd play. Hasn't Slot already said Isak will be in the squad?

With an eye on Ev., 3 days and a 12.30 KO later.

Jones : PL Injuries say 29th so ruled out of both games. Nothing on Macca so just precautionary.

Get Isak on for 10-15 mins. Gomez must get mins, ditto Chiesa and maybe a taster for Rio. We're going to miss Jones to give breathers in both games. Maybe Endo or Nyoni for a few mins.

Isak has to get at least 10 mins vs Atletico based on yesterday's forward line performance.

Salah again, bar slotting the penalty, was poor and would seem to be the one to be dropped...but doubt Arne would do so. Guessing Ekitike will be the one to be sacrificed for Isak when Arne deems the time is right?

Isak will get Chiesa's minutes for the next few weeks.

I watched Slot before the game on Sky. He was asked and he said in the squad midweek then suddenly back tracked somewhat. Then said this.

Arne Slot said Liverpool would need to be patient with Alexander Isak, after leaving him out of the 1-0 victory against Burnley. The striker is not ready for the demands of playing regularly after missing pre-season and Slot is looking to build up his stamina slowly.

“We got him from Newcastle in a state where you could say his pre-season is going to start now,” Slot said of Isak. “He needs proper minutes of training before he has a certain base, let alone for him to play twice in three days.

“So that’s what we do, we try to prepare players for the beginning of the season once a week, and then we try to do more and more and more before we go into the rhythm of two games a week, so that they are ready for that schedule.”

He then went on to talk about Wissa being the same and was then overplayed on international duties and is now injured.

We might see him against Southampton for the first half then get games after that. The next two games could be too tight to risk it. If they were games we may hope to be 4-0 up we would throw him on for 10 minutes.

Alternatively if they are that tight - or we are behind - then Isak for the last 10-15 mins could be a viable roll of the dice.

At 4-0 the intensity of the game has gone. During a tight game it hasn’t. We’ve seen in every game this season we actually up the tempo when chasing a win.

That's fine. I don't think intensity per se would be the issue (he'll get that in training) more than stamina and multiple sprints over an extended (e.g 60 mins) period.

Salah to come on for Frimpong, and Isak for Ekitike on the 60th minute, to break the deadlock. Nyoni, Bajcetic to get their Slot debuts

Amd after the game Shearer will praise Isak and tell us how he always wished he could play in the Champions League

Wasn't there suppose to be a thing where teams who played Wednesday in the champ lge wouldn't get the early Saturday game or am I just channeling my inner Klopp?

They have have 4 x injury concerns after the weekend
Julian Alvarez (knee), David Hancko (ankle) and Robin Le Normand (back) were all forced off at the weekend along with goalscorer Gonzalez (cramp).
