Pre Match Pre Match - Southampton (A) - Tues 20:00

BTW Will Wright, the young striker we got from Salford this summer, is also not in action today, but that's probably down to the injury he picked up against Atleti in the midweek UEFA Youth League game that led to his early withdrawal.

He’s got to start Wirtz in this game, he’ll get on the scoresheet and he’ll be feeling a hell of lot better in himself.

Well that’s the plan anyway..
That is a big double-edged sword. There is a very good chance he would look worse, as he is already struggling to sync with the players that we plays with most often on the practice pitch. He is starting to find some rhythm with them, which is a two-way street.

I would have him come off the bench, if needed. I think a second game against Palace is more likely to bring out success. And, if he does not have a great impact against a poor Championship team, the pressure will be much, much worse.

Spot on tbh.

"Struggling" seems a tad overcooked to me. For sure there's more work to do, but it was never going to be an overnight job and some of his touches are already looking promising.

That said, I'd probably bring him off the bench too, as I'd be playing primarily squaddies and youngsters in the domestic cups anyway.

Maybe. I think the “struggle” is not all on him, though. He also needs teammates that anticipate where he wants to put the ball. That will come with time, but our 2nd team will need even more time to get on same wavelength.

Kaide Gordon? Thought he was sold or something.

Nope, he still turns out for the U21s now and then. Just not a regular in that side. I don't think he'll be involved in this game though, considering he spent his pre-season with the U21s and not the seniors. Another of our Academy forwards whose career has been blighted by injuries (see: Yesil, Nemeth, Cannonier, ...)

I left out Tommy Pilling in the missing list for the U21s game, so maybe there's a spot for him too with 5 first team absences in this game. Can't say I know anything about him other than him being a midfielder.

I think Endo, Robbo or Nyoni will be called upon to perform emergency CB duty as the need arises, unless we see the Rhysurrection of Williams, who last appeared for our U21s in the Vertu EFL Trophy game against Burton recently (together with the forever-21 Jay Spearing).

The first priority will be for players who need match fitness, topped up by the up and coming youngsters. We will have some hard hitters on the bench for if shit hits the fan. I wouldn't be too upset if we are knocked out but we should still try I guess.

Yes trying to get knocked out is what we should be doing!

And what’s the plan if he starts and doesn’t score?
He's not a striker - that isn't the prime reason for his inclusion. He's there for creativity, to press, for control and ball retention and to knit the attack together. For that to happen the attack needs to settle and the players get to know each other to anticipate the runs and passes. With two new strikers, one unfit, and Mo. being anonymous, it's not going to be fluid or perfect yet.

For me it's the control aspect that is lacking at the moment, it's expected that if you are trying to be creative in the final third then not every pass will go to feet, however at the moment he's giving up a few too many loose passes and reacting a little too slowly to situations, I expect both of those aspects to improve as he adjusts to the PL, to his team mates and especially the speed & quality of the PL. The goals and assists will naturally come from that improvement.

Stevie Nicol probably wouldn't accept the invitation. Super player and would be in my idea of the All-Time XI but, as a pundit, he's caught a bad case of Lawrenson Syndrome, i.e.calling absolutely everything against us in an overdone attempt to be "unbiased".
