Trent as the ‘6’

The TAW guys were discussing the opportunity for Klopp to use our current predicament to spend large on a CB and RB, and shift Trent firmly into the 6 role (either in a 433 or double pivot depending on signings).

With two excellent abs prolific runners / pressers ahead of him, and a defensively sound RB signed, what’s your thoughts on Trent quarterbacking his way through 433 games whilst offering defensive nous too?

I think late season was enough to convince me of his brilliance in a double pivot.

With someone more defensively minded alongside him yes.

I think we'll continue with the 3223 type box midfield formation whatever you wanna call it.

Trent Grav (for example)
Szobo MacAli

Yes.

Trent MacAli
Szobo Jones (for example)

Ehhh, nah.

I genuinely think that Trent is the kind of generational talent where you need to build the team around him. We should be looking at a formation that gives him the licence to take up positions from which he can Hirt the opposition with his passing range and creativity.
I'm not smart enough to tell you what that formation is, but we could see at the end of last season how he had the ability to affect the game where he had the licence to drift in-field from right back, but that obviously left us exposed at the back and gave Konate a lot to do.
We just need to find a way of letting him do his thing, not putting any conventional positional shackles on him, but without leaving us too exposed at the back. Klopp's a smart guy, he'll find a way.
But he also needs a way of switching that formation to something more conventional if and when Trent is rotated / injured / having a bad day.

Yeah was listening to the same podcast and I disagree. Trent is not a "6", just like Gerrard never was a 6

I don't think Trent has the positioning ability to be a solo 6. Double pivot, absolutely. On his own, no

Nailed it.

You’d be asking the RB famed for not being really good at defending to protect his CBs & MF.

Also, he’s not great at breaking through the press with his back to goal - he needs space, time and ideally facing the opposition.

Also - and I’m going to keep banging this drum - if we’re playing Salah, someone needs to offer width high up the park - which means either Trent providing it, or him covering the space vacated by someone else doing it.

Otherwise you’ll see Salah’s numbers drop significantly and we’re back to relying on Nunez banging them in like Haaland.

I think Lavia is or was the key - because I think he has the long passing ability and could operate as a single 6 or either in a double 6, but we’d need another DM to replace Fabs now.

Has there been any kind of indication that Klopp intends to shift TAA from RB?

It doesn't seem so to me. We've not been linked to a single RB... just midfielders.

We kinda have built the team around TAA in some respects... it's just that it's been done with him at RB.

I’m not sure on the reliability of the link, but Pavard’s been mentioned here and there as on our radar.

I hope Klopp and the team don't do any stupidity of not signing a proper DM and think of relying on internal squad members or Trent.
I think we need proper RB cover irrespective of whether we sign a DM or not. Please don't abuse Gomez by playing him in RB anymore. Either keep him as a back up for CB position or sell him.

I think this is chiefly why we moved for szoboszlai. Him and Salah are pretty much interchangeable when attacking.

It's a bit odd though that we've lost Milner and Ramsay over the Summer though. They were basically our back ups for right back, other than Gomez who's either in the treatment room or all over the place.

Perhaps Bradley is now viewed as Trent's backup
The kid was one of Bolton's best players last season. I hope he gets a chance at LFC this season, but he's not a traditional RB.
Had more of a wingback role.

I’d love to see Trent as the 6 with someone else at RB. I think we’ll most likely start with Thiago as the 6 with Trent and Mac switching who progresses the most down the right side and who sticks with Thiago.

No, but it doesn't stop the master tacticians of the internet being 100% sure that he's a midfielder for us now

In answer to both - no there’s been no credible links to RB - even Pavard could be competition for Konate and utilised more as a RCB.

There’s only 2 options really and we could do both.

We either revert to the old 433 with Trent pushing up high right and the RCM pressing and providing defensive cover behind Trent - something like a younger, more mobile Hendo.

Or we utilise a 343 box midfield where we don’t have a RB. In that system we could stick to that formation or do what we did last season and go 343 in possession and 433 out of possession.

If we were a more rigid 343, Lavia could cover both Trent & Fabs (had he been staying) - I think he possesses the long passing ability.

The hybrid 6/RB role is unique to Trent - not sure if any other player who could play in that role.

If we revert to our 433 then Bradley as attacking & Gomez as a more defensive backups makes sense.

Trying to get Trent the space & time to be able to hurt teams while minimise the space other teams can find to hurt us is one of the critical issues of next season.

Think we would need someone more physically dominant to play as a 6 in this league. Trent plus someone like that in a double pivot would be fine.

Trent gets easily bypassed in midfield.

I'm not sold on this inverted FB role quite yet either, considering that we played it during a series of non-competitive games.

He did- but that's what a Klopp FB looks like, isn't it? We have many games where the average match position of our FBs is higher than any single midfielder. It must also said that Bradley played a number of times for Northern Ireland last year (he is now a first pick starter for the National team), and played most of those games as a traditional FB.

I guess I'm looking for a right back that would allow Trent to play in midfield.
Hopefully his defending has improved.
