UK General Election 24/25

As I was voting yesterday there was a stereotypical reform voter arguing about having to use a pencil rather than a pen.

"Why? She was gesturing to the volunteers"

It'll all be a conspiracy to how they got so few seats.
Take your own in if you are that much of a knob I'd have said.

I always thank the people that run the polls and feel a tiny bit ashamed I haven't volunteered

Looking at who's left in the tories I'm not terribly sure Sunak will get to resign as leader. They got so few alternatives

Cleverly? Badenok? Hunt? Last time round I think Tugenhat stood? Beyond them Esther McVay or Steve Barclay?

Not exactly prime leadership talent

Seems ripe for Farage to take over

I think they get a good hourly rate for that. A friend of mine worked in the counting centres a couple of times in the 2000s and was getting something like 15 quid an hour.

Thank fuck it wasn't 13 seats, 4 is still a concern although I'm pleased Farage got elected cos now he'll have to do the job instead of swanning around saying how shit all the MPs are
Farage wins. Sentenced to 5 years in Clacton on Sea.

Shit I fortgot Braverman (sp?) - she's a fucking nightmare

So many political biographies getting started this weekend.

Good luck getting a shed office in B&Q for the next couple of weeks.

Reform had 4m votes and 4 seats, Lib dems 3.4m and 71 seats, Tories had 6.7m and 119 seats. I understand that it would never be votes equals exact proportion of seats, but that feels totally broken in terms of a democratic vote?

First past the post is wild. Insane. But just this once I can really appreciate that Farage caused a Labour landslide.

I now realise that the 'independant' is a actually a DUP guy and Paisley lost to another Unionist so it's still pretty much the same 7 SF vs 8 Unionist
The funniest thing about Paisley is the seat had been his dad's and then his for the last 50 years. People call Ian Paisley Jr either Jr or Ian Όg, that's the Irish for young, so if a child has the same name as their dad or grandfather they would be referred to as Όg. He was probably more upset about losing the chance for all-expenses trips to the Maldives.

DUP also lost Lagan valley which belonged to Wee Jeffrey Donaldson, he's currently awaiting trial on allegations sexual assault and rape. A woman called Sorcha Eastwood took his seat, she's in the Alliance party which are technically pro-union but tend to be kind of left-wing wishy-washy fence sitters (according to some). One of my earliest memories of politics in NI was when some DUP guy was canvassing and asked my dad who he was voting for and my dad said Alliance. I was a good bit older when I realised why.

Also, the SDLP got two votes and they're nationalist so it's more 9 outright nationalists v 8 outright unionists and then an independant and an Alliance seat.

Seats I'm guessing!

I always took it that the Alliance were non-sectarian and SDLP were the 'polite' version of nationalism. Taking their seats and distancing themselves from para-militaries (which of course is a given nowadays that goodness)

Just hoping for Angela Rayner to hand a hundred letters in and call a no confidence vote.

Nice one Kier, now fuck off with this manifesto of zero change.

She seems nailed on to be the next leader doesn't she. I'd be watching my back if I were he

No borrowing. No changes to taxation. Just jiggle things about a bit. Can't see how that gets anyone anywhere, or is popular with anyone. A 'vote for change' with a promise of more of the same. The country is in the bin and needs ambition.

It seems 100% clear to me that Labour didn't win this election (weird to say when they got a ridiculously, amazingly huge majority), rather the Tories lost it. Their votes going to the Lib Dems in the south/Sothwest and to Reform across the whole of GB

Totally. They could have stuck a potato in charge and said everyone was getting free cider on Fridays and they still would have won cos Farage split the vote. Which is why the lack of ambition is so frustrating

Yeah, pretty much. Of course Sinn Fein "distance" themselves from the paramilitaries these days but will still show up at the odd funeral of ex IRA members...

Badenoch, Cleverly, Tugenhat, Patel and Jenrick will put their names in. I'm guessing Hunt won't. I hope Braverman or McVey won't.

There'll no doubt be one or two relative unknowns as well.

I'm not totally sure what Farage wants though, ultimately.

He might well be very happy to be a kind of Galloway type figure. Being an MP gives him more legitimacy while making more money on the side

True. And if the next four years is anything like the last four nothing is predictable. But the noise on the right must be to unify, cos that's what's cost them. It's normally the other way round.
