Wharton Earth

How much overlap is there between Morton and Wharton (even down to a similar sounding name)?

I wonder if we have a buy back clause.

If passing through the lines is his stand out attribute I’d be wary he can do against a low block. Much easier to pass through the lines at Palace.

In any case we have much bigger issues to address first.

I think we did insert a buy back clause or a sell-on clause, but don't let Morty's performances in France lead you to believe that he's somehow good enough to play for us. He's at best a decent squad player. Wharton is further ahead in his development and also 2 years younger.

In hindsight Morton would have been useful, but you know how Slot works, he doesn't do "average".
The kid sat on the bench for an entire year, just look at Harvey.

Also, the French league is shit.

I hear ya on all counts and odds are you're right but we know what it's like sometimes with players, sometimes they just need a shot and a run of games.

The main thing I like about this player is he can pass forward well and between the lines. Gravy isn't a good risk taker when it comes to passing forward. He dithers and the space closes down.

He would very much help replace one of TAA's skill contribution from deep. Our only reliable player that we have that attempts this is from the back is Joe Gomez, who is always injured.

Don't believe this happens in Jan though. Will be pleasantly surprised if it does.
Yeah I get that shout. We really do lack players who are brave and quick with those forward passes through the lines. Too often we slow it down, take an extra touch, and by then the window’s gone.

That’s why Trent is such a miss when he’s not influencing games from deep — he changes the tempo instantly. Gravenberch has qualities but that killer vertical pass isn’t natural to him yet.

If this lad can actually do that consistently, he’d add a different dimension to our build-up. Just can’t see us pulling it off in January either… feels more like a summer move, if at all.

In hindsight we should’ve sold Endo and Chiesa with us keeping Morton and Elliott. At least they aren’t sick notes and don’t use up the non-home grown slots.

Wharton grades well on progressive passes and duels. Excellent long-range passer, which is definitely something this squad lacks. BUT given the lack of pace out wide, not sure how progressive passing even helps us. Trent had Mane/Diaz to find always on the opposite flank, or Salah on the channel in front. Not sure this profile helps us in transitions until we actually get speedy wingers/attackers.

Secondly, while he's an excellent long-passer, I'm not sure he's that technically proficient in tight spaces, which is a necessity if you want him playing the classic 6 / DLP role. I agree that Elliot Anderson and even Jones are better than him in this regard.

I don't think this is a profile we really need to be after. If you're committed to a double pivot in the long run - Macallister, Gravenberch, Jones - is a very solid trio. You probably need to upgrade on Endo with a younger rotation option. Pity that Bajcetic has had such rotten injury luck - he should ideally have been the one taking this spot.
