Maybe....1 more Italian?

I'm not saying I'm not excited about this, but Quansah was meant to be this guy, and we were quite excited about him. This guy has about the same amount of data suggesting he's the next big thing. We are just spinning the wheel again, with the money we got from him.

This lad’s got strength and aggression in abundance though, something Quansah struggled with despite a decent frame.

The Lion King is going to be a prem star…

If Italians do one thing well its top centre backs. And this one is a monster.

He's the Virgil Successor we all wanted.

He looks very promising but he's only made 17 top flight appearances in Seria A.

Keeping expectations very low. We need Guehi, no doubt.

Yeah, I mean, "he will probably not work out" is a more normal baseline than "he will replace the best CB I've ever seen."

I like the energy though.

He's getting laid by a 64 year old billionairess and inheriting her fortune after he breaks her hip. Some things, you can just tell.

So.. inner Charlatans - “Leoni One I Know”

Or inner Chaney Hawkes - “The One and Leoni”.

Or inner Roy Orbison - “Only Leoni”

Or inner Dusty Springfield - I Leoni Want to be With You”.

Or we could go James Bond - “For Your Eyes Leoni” or “You Leoni Live Twice”!!!

Liverpool are closing in on completing the signing of Parma defender Giovanni Leoni in a deal worth an initial £26million ($35.2m).

The Athletic reported on August 12 that Liverpool were interested in Leoni and were trying to persuade him to move to Anfield. There is no full agreement in place yet but it is close.

The pursuit of Leoni is in conjunction with the move for Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace as Arne Slot looks to bolster his options at the back with only three fit central defenders currently available to him.

Liverpool regard the 18-year-old as one of the most talented young central defenders in European football.

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes held talks with Parma CEO Federico Cherubini on Wednesday to finalise the transfer.

Leoni made his senior debut for Padova in Serie C in March 2023, aged just 16 years and 3 months – making him the youngest professional footballer to feature in Italy that season.

In February the following year, he joined Serie B club Sampdoria on loan and the deal was made permanent in June 2024 after he the centre-half impressed in the Italian second-tier in the second half of the 2023-24 campaign.

In August 2024, Leoni stepped up another division when he joined Parma just two months after his permanent transfer to Sampdoria.

The teenager made 17 appearances, including 14 from the start, in the top flight last term, as Parma finished 16th.

Leoni has been capped by Italy’s Under-19 side, and has a contract with Parma until summer 2029.

Liverpool have been looking for defensive reinforcements since selling Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen last month.

The Premier League champions have enjoyed a busy summer with Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong arriving from Bayer Leverkusen alongside Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt and Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth while the club maintain an ongoing interest in Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak.

Are the stats similar? Quansah just dropped off, not sure we had much choice in the trade. His head was elsewhere in games it seems.

It’s a shame Quansah didn’t step up, as having both would make me feel incredibly good about the future of our central defence. This is a good signing, hopefully his upwards trajectory continues here.

I still feel we need one more unless Slot actually thinks Gomez can be available most of the season and play 20 games

If Guehi stays put for another season I'd prefer us to sign an additional CB as well as Leoni even if we keep Gomez, who may also be needed as a RB stand-in now and then.

The data says that Quansah won about 40% of his aerial and ground duels last season in the PL. Which isnt very good for a CB and the reason he was subbed off at half time in the first game.
The data says that Leoni won over 60 % of his aerial and ground duels last season, is 3 years younger and 2 inches taller and was the highest scoring U23 defender.

I like spinning this new bigger wheel with a better chance of winning with its data driven, game reading, massive frame and chance to be the next big thing.

No, the data preceding that drop-off that had many saying he would be the one to replace van dijk, rather than just hoping he'd become a very good footballer and saleable asset. You need to contextualize information to understand it, there's a massive human component, and data only suggests things, it doesn't anticipate the future. Quansah probably would still be here if we hadn't changed managers, and I'd guess he'd be more performant as well.

Maybe we are spinning a new bigger wheel with a better chance of winning. Winning means his value goes up. What I'm saying is stop looking at the tiny jackpot part of the wheel that says "vvd replacement." We are unlikely to land on that.

Thing for me with Quansah is also that the fact he actually started against Ipswich (over Konate) showed that his reputation to that point was very high. I think there was a confidence killed that never recovered.

In a way it feels ok that we are not losing money in selling Q and bringing in this new guy - but does also feel like a 'we could have had both' situation. Hey ho.

Couldn't agree more with your general point @Farkmaster

But it should of course be noted in Italy.

He's definitely got some fun anecdotes on his highlights. That's the big one.

That's isn't data.

You said he read the game well. Based on what?

Has anyone actually said he's the heir to VVD?

I would have thought the general opinion was that we are getting in a very talented CB that we can develop into a starter. Whether or not he'll be a success is anyone's guess, but he certainly has a lot of traits and potential that we should be excited about.
Virgil is the best CB in the world. Replacing him like for like is probably close to impossible.
