Seriously, this has the divisive one's ego written all over it. One of the best players in the country, and he's on the bench
As much as it's fashionable to assume mourinho is washed up & making stupid decisions to bolster his ego, I'd be very surprised if he didn't have a damn good footballing reason behind it.
Perhaps mata doesn't suit his preferred formation & he feels he'd lose the benefits of other players by accommodating him?
Agree.
I think Ryan's comment was pretty much spot on.
Watching Oscar on the break; quick feet with amazing close control you can see how dangerous he is in a counter attack style. That's Jose's main focus - remember them beating Barca in the CL at Stamford Bridge in '05? They got the ball three times in the first 20 minutes, breaking from their own area on each occasion, scored 3 goals.
I thought he'd change that this time given the players he had. He didn't really play that way with Inter and was still successful. It must just be his preferred approach.
Hhmmm, I personally don't go along with these last two posts.
The focus is to win trophies - not make sure your most skillful players are in the team. If Jose wins trophies then he's done his job - regardless of who he played. If he doesn't win them and he left out great players then he's got some explaining in front of him.
Veron was a world class player who didn't suit the mancs playing style. I'm sure many people wanted him on the pitch but Ferguson won without him and that was what counted.

Comparing Veron's time at United to Mata's at Chelsea in laughableAside from a few games/goals he flopped, Mata's been one of Chelsea's most consistent and productive players since he joined!
