To settle an argument... would you rather have £100m or Fernando Torres?

Let's assume that Torres wants to stay at Liverpool, but that he understands our financial situation and will leave if it is to the benefit of the club.

Keep him. Sell the deadwood. If he stays fit he can guarantee champions league football every season which is worth 30 odd million a year. Plus we'd be in with a shout of challenging for the league, under the correct manager.

I think the main reason we ought to keep him at all costs - quite apart from his brilliance, his goalscoring record, and the way he brings the best out of Gerrard - is that, symbolically, if Man City buy our best player, we may as well just hand them a sign saying 'WE HAVE REPLACED LIVERPOOL AS A TOP 4 CLUB'.

Plus I'd cry like a kid if he left.

if he wasn't injury prone then i deffo wouldn't sell 'cos he IS that good that he'd guarantee top 4.

Keep him. Shut down the Academy, sell all the starlets to get rid of their wage bill and uneccessary backroom staff if cash is needed.

Two people (so far) need to man up and admit their vote. Or face a public naming & shaming (if the forum software is up to it?)

*Bits bait*

But Arsenal sold Touré and Adebayor and they are doing great!

SELL TORRES NOW!

if Torres was always fit and played as many games as Reina per season i would never even considering selling him.. not even for 200 million.

but if he is likely to miss 40% of our season with niggling injuries and another 10-15% playing while unfit and sulking then selling him for that sum would easily be the best choice. however... nobody knows if he is likely to be fit or not..

At the moment without Gerrard and Torres we look more like Fulham... but at least they are able to string 4 passes together.

Saying that.. even if we 'KNEW' through the use of a time machine that Torres would be injured for 70% of the season i don't think Rafa is the guy to spend the money if we sold him.. thats considering the Americans don't use it to pay off the debt.
With the club currently in a dodgy situation and with us selling our best player and with all the poor man management stories roaming the net i highly doubt anyone with half a brain would want to join us.

Babel, Pennant, Keane, Sissoko, Reina, Gerrard, Cisse, Voronin and many others have all had a crack at Rafa at various times. Its not really a great advertisement of the quality of life at the club. Then.. arguably our most professional player - Alonso. Gets treated like complete shite and requests a transfer.

I think long term considering the hero status he has at the club and the respect he has earned from other players around the entire world - to sell him would be the worst action possible. It would make us look small and would make all the fans very bitter. I think for the long term future of the club Torres cannot be sold for any fee.

I'd take the 100m. its fucking ONE HUNDRED MILLION!!! even if the manager didn't get a penny it is halving the debt together with the rhone 100m liverpool's debt would be less than 40 million that guarantees work starts on the stadium which would secure liverpool's future for decades.

Who say's debt under 40 million gets the stadium started?

Also, no point having an 80,000 seat stadium if your a mid-table selling team.

1) if liverpool's debts were 40m they would DEFINATELY get a loan for the stadium, they'll be able to get a loan for the stadium when rhone reduces the debt by 100m.

2) with liverpool having a debt of 40m that makes them (LFC) a much more attractive propersition for an all out takeover

3) selling torres would turn us into a midtable outfit?

So you have absolute trust in our owners (and any future potential owners) to use the money wisely, not pocket any of it themselves, and build us a brand new spanking stadium sometime this century, do you?

And yes, if we sold Torres and didn't even use any of the money to replace him, we would be condemning ourselves to midtable mediocrity at best. You do realise Spurs, Villa, City and even the likes of Birmingham will be spending heavily this summer?

So you're comparing a reserve CB and a moody, troublemaking, greedy-arsed, inconsistent centre forward to the BEST FUCKING STRIKER IN WORLD FOOTBALL, are you? Especially bearing in mind Arsenal had about a dozen other international forwards in their squad, while we've got Wash N'gog. Nice one Bradley.

(thanks for biting)

Speculation, if the debt is reduced the owners might decide to ride out the economically storm and not reenter debt with another huge loan. That's also speculation but it works both ways. Just had to deal with a sick baby so the flow of this post may be screwed from this point on.

2) with liverpool having a debt of 40m that makes them (LFC) a much more attractive propersition for an all out takeout.
Fair point

3) selling torres would turn us into a midtable outfit?
No, but if Torres goes our other world class players might decide that it's time to move on also and we would really struggle.

Even if he's only fit for 50% of any season i wouldnt sell him! But we are pigeon holing ourselves with only having one international striker at a club which has the biggest aspirations in world football!! I woudnt trust Rafa to replace him with a 100 million transfer fee anymore than id trust the cunt owners to give rafa the fee to replace him!

Džeko (£20m), Villa (£45m) and Agüero (£35m)

Or

Torres
[/quote]

Do you honestly think Valencia and Atletico would sell us those players at those prices, knowing that we'd got £100m to spend - and that Chelsea and Real are also after them?

Keep him. We may spend 100 million and still not get a player who has the same sort of impact on the club - on and off the field. He is an iconic footballer - very few of them around.

Even if the 100 million were completely invested back into the squad, we will have to pay the extra tax due to clubs knowing that we have 100 million in the bank.

Villa is 29 this year, so £45m seems a very good price for him imo Bunny. You might have a point with regards to Agüero, so i'll exchange him for Benzema (Real signed him for £30m).

My point is though, that "if" we got £100m for Torres, then we could significantly improve our team.

torres is the best out and out striker in the world, no question but weighed against the long term future of the club and 100m would pretty much guarantee the stadium which would in turn guarantee the long term future of the club. obviously if the yanks had kept their promises we'd have the stadium AND torres.

I didn't realise Villa was that old. That's hardly a point in favour of signing him and selling the 26-year-old Torres though, is it?

No, but it wouldn't be Torres out and only Villa coming in would it?

Anyway fuck this, i'm feeling a bit dirty talking about selling Torres with the manc game nearly upon us.
