I'd rather we signed Downing and fucked off this French lad whos been injured all season and will be on hefty wages and inevitably be the biggest pile of wank ever.

The other aspect of it is not everyone can be the star of the show, those stars need a supporting cast who aren't going try to overplay their position by attempting to make their own chances rather than chances for our big money stars.

We're clearly not going to be asking Downing to lead the team, were going to ask him to get down the wing and stick decent crosses in for Carroll. By all accounts that's a job he's capable of doing.

Whereas signing Hazard adds a potentially better player to the mix I don't think he'll have as much of a benefit for Carroll

For me signing Downing would be disappointing. I see some of the same people who said give Roy a chance last year say "he'll be steady hands", or "you can't have all great players", or "don't judge him yet", or you "need a supporting cast". or "he'll be a squaddy" - well first let's sign some high quality talent and then I'll jump for joy when Downing is linked as back-up.

Of course we can't afford 11-15 world beaters in every position, and we need grafters and the less talented reliables, but Downing would be a terrible statement of intent, at this point unless we're going to also sign another high caliber winger or flair player. By statement of intent, I mean we're signing more plodders - to continue as before.

And if you want a supporting cast Rosco, is it not better to bring through some of the talented youth for that role? Don't we supposedly have a great crop of players on the way?

Why sign the Downings of the world? blood more young lads, and at least you could sell on a young player who didn't make the grade to a Blackburn or a Wigan. With a Downing, you'd be stuck with high wages and a difficult sale.

I said from the word go Hodgson was a dreary terrible appointment. I think Downing would be a very good addition.

I hear you Doc, and you could be right, personally, I think we need to raise our expectations a little. I don't see Arsenal, Chelsea, Citeh, Spurs, United making these kind of signings. He reminds of a Bolo Zenden signing. Solid, reliable, won't hurt you, but won't win you games with a flash of brilliance. We need that flash...

Zenden and Downing are two very very different players.

Downing can do a very good job for us on the left. He's got pace, decent ability, can play on the right and left and has an excellent cross on him.

Coming into his prime now at 26 and has 6 goals and 8 assists for a struggeling Villa this season.

I think he would be an excellent signing. Its all about getting the right players, finding the right mix and balance.
I trust Kenny.

A steady Eddie signing at most but who knows. We've been linked to so many players.

Interesting summer ahead I hope.

I do too. Would just love a flier on the wing for once.

He'd be a star if he played week in week out but he always gets dropped after he scores

I really don't want Downing

romantically or profesionally?

surprised downing has more dribbles

ive come round to downing, ive decided to be positive about who we get, we woulda finished at least fourth last season if it wasnt for woy, so these small improvements will at least get us back into the champions league, when we can start gettin some big names in the mould of neymar/aguero etc, by then the youth will have come on a lot and the players that may be seen as 'average' will be great squad players

I've been impressed with Downing this year.

He's a smart footballer who is very underrated. The problem with him is he lacks the pace outwide which I think we need.

Won't be that necessary if Clichy joins.
