Fat Sam has downing it again - Super Stu signs for West Ham

We need a better player on the right but it's easy to replace Downing. We can play Kelly on the right and Glenjo on the right wing, he can't possibly be worse than Downing.
But that's a short term solution.

We simply have to have someone lined up - in fact we probably need 2 wide attacking midfielders now - one right, one left.

Im not.
Our policy this summer has been really fucking alarming.
Carroll
Downing
Reina
Shelvey
Carragher
Suso
All gone
Suarez and Skrtel probably going too.
And only mignolet and toure are certain to come in to the team and are questionable in relation to wether they have improved us.
I know those players in the main part werent good enough, but getting rid of them without buying replacements wont help.
I think we might be in big trouble.
I want to believe the club have a few worldies around the corner to blow us all away with, but at the minute we are going to be relying on the same players who got us 7th last year.

You've got a point, we're pretty much back to square one or we never left square one tbf.

-------------Mignolet

Johnson Agger Touré Enrique

----------Lucas-----Gerrard
--------------Coutinho
X -----------------------------------X (Should be Suarez)
--------------Sturridge

We really need one or two top class attacking midfielders but it was pretty much the same story before Downing left. I'd be extremely happy if we manage to sign a CB as well.

While Downing never shone for us (bar the odd game) he always worked hard, and he seemed like a likable sort of guy. I wish him all the best at West Ham.

It's not good that we haven't got replacements in yet but Downing, Reina, Shelvey and, to some extent Suso, played regularly to get us to 7th. Losing those players is no biggy since if we keep them then it's 7th again. Worst case, is that there are no further transfers in to the club so we're reliant on the young like Ibe to step up.

Certainly not a guarantee that we'll get 4th or higher but it's better than keeping the status quo. Yes, admittedly, we could drop lower in the table...

Just wanted to add that Suso isn't lost. Yet...
His move will give me another reason to watch La liga football this season.

What the f*ck !!! - why is he not going o Barca ? - what I have I been missing this summer ? This is really disappointing - losing one of our most talented players.

I don't get it - I thought Suarez was only banned for 6 games next season, did not realize he was banned from training with the team too. Have we signed anyone ? - have been away in Bangladesh.

This is the situation we're in though. They were never going to go splash the cash before we got all the mediocre high earners off the wage bill. We've rolled the dice. Now we just gotta hope it works out.

They don't have internet in Bangladesh?

Sell him.

Nice lad, average to decent player, but on too high wages and not good enough for a side aspiring for Champions League football.

The lack of signings is a concern, but I don't think there's reason to panic. Ibe and Sterling look too very dangerous players who could cause havoc from the flanks this season. Coutinho's new, but already looking like one the best players in England and a strikeforce of Sturidge and Suarez is very impressive. Play them 5 and it will be too much for many sides to cope with.

Hopefully there's a few quality players who will come in and add to this.

I am far from being a fan of super Stu.
But the reality is that he was a consistent starter in the first eleven in the second half of last season.
As much as he needs to be upgraded and improved on, until we have that player in place, I won't be popping the champagne at his departure.

Oh tish tosh. It's an unqualified day for celebration. We've plenty of better options. Let yourself be happy. Don't be such a dub.

Ibe is that player

He loves us as well. £5m for Downing is a bargain, if Downing was playing for another club he would of gone for £7- £8m. He got more than a 25% discount for carroll from the once agreed £19m.

Bollox, on his wages 5M is the very best we could have hoped for.... a fucking shocking signing. It's not very often I would be grateful for the existence of Big Sam but I have to say I'm delighted. Whether we replace him or not it is the right move, you cannot just arrive at a club on big cash and contribute next to fuck all in near on 3 years...

Getting him off the wage bill and freeing up so money( reducing the debt a little) and also space for a younger player to grow is definitely the right move. Rodgers gave him his shot, as did Kenny and overall he did very very little to justify a starting place let alone his big money...

Good on ya Big Sam I say!!

We have sold expensive players (wage wise) who were going to sit on the bench mostly. I guess we'll have some kids there instead considering the lack of replacements. I have no problem with that but it certainly wouldn't hurt if we bought a couple of grown ups.

It's completely reasonable to expect one of Aspas/Alberto/Sterling/Ibe to be atleast as productive as Downing was last season. His counting stats were a marginal improvement, and while he was fairly consistent, he was consistently mediocre. Calling his contributions Vanilla would be an insult to the flavor. It's like he had a mediocre ceiling, and an incredibly low floor.

Also, didn't he get arrested or something for beating his girlfriend a fair few months back?

I get your point, but two things stand out for me out of all that.

1 - I'm happy the majority of those shitcunts you've listed are gone. I'd have driven most of them out myself.
2 - Based on absolutely fuck all I think we still might spend 30M odd before the window slams shut, and if that 30M is on 2 good players then we mightn't be in as bad a situation.

A lot of if's though.

For me, the most positive thing this window is the sort of players we're being linked with, and are actively looking at. It's not like a few summers back when the media was throwing us a pity party and shoehorning us in as a potential suitor for Aguero, or Alexis Sanchez, or Hazard. We're interested in players who are young, talented, and have top level match experience, which checks the majority of the boxes.

The concern is that that shortlist of players we are interested in: Diego Costa, Mkhitaryan, Soldado, etc is getting shorter, and at some point we're going to go after a less than ideal option. The Willian link is an intriguing one, and Eriksen keeps coming back, so I would very surprised if we sit on our hands for the rest of the window.

I've never been a fan of Downing, but I have to say in the 2nd half of last season he has been a consistent 7/10 player and that's not as easy to replace as some people seem to think. If not for his high wages, I would have said it makes sense to keep Stewie for another season. I think of Aspas as the primary replacement and I expect him to be an improvement on Downing in terms of goals and assists, but he might not be as consistent.

Stewie's departure will also open up some space for Sterling will get some valuable game time. If he doesn't land himself in jail first.

I still think we'll bring in two players who will be a big step up, probably a centre back and an attacker, with a left back at a reasonable cost. You've also got to add a few to that who played little part last season -

Carroll - I'm not sure that really makes any difference, he was already gone and we've added Sturridge and Aspas
Downing - Sterling and Ibe both look ready to play a part
Reina - Mignolet (jury out)
Shelvey - See Downing - We also added Coutinho which limited his chances
Carragher - Toure (jury out), Martin Kelly might also play a part if fit, we're also adding a left back
Suso - Alberto

As for Skrtel and Suarez, if they go it's a no brainer they'll be replaced, particularly the latter. Whether it's with better quality is debatable, but we'll buy, there's not really alot we can do about Suarez, he's acted the cunt and we're playing hardball, we'll either keep the player or have £50m.

You would have thought if we'd really wanted Eriksen, we'd have signed him by now. I reckon Rodgers doesn't fancy him because he can't play out wide and he seems to want attacking players that can slot in to a few different forward positions.

Moving Downing in is the correct thing to do.

Not bringing in someone new who can make an impact in the attacking third, is not.

Kelly/GlenJo on the right is much worse than GlenJo/Downing.... Short term and long term.

While Eriksen probably isn't at the top of the list, I would be very surprised if he wasn't on it at all. We could end up "settling" for him if a few more of our options don't pan out.

After last season it makes no sense to sell Stu unless a direct replacement is bought. We can't just assume Sterling can be consistent enough.
