If its possible to have a favourite Manc player this guy would be it.
A top top player, he was great for England and retired too early. He's a great pro and a gentleman in the game in this age of wags and ferraris he stood out as a family man and a quietly spoken limelight shunning chap.
I dont know if many of you will see past him being a Manc but i always liked him and im sad he's retired today.
Good luck Paul and thanks for saving Oldham a few years ago.

About the only Manc I could stomach. Cracking player but couldnt tackle for toffee.

great player, but i fucking hate him

and i have no reason aside from him being a manc

It annoys me how much I like the guy, not only a great player but the way he shunned the limelight and never courted controversy was a REAL example to kids - unlike the snarling Keane, the sweary Rooney or the moody (and subsequently cheaty) Giggs.

ive always preferred giggs if im honest, scholes just seems like a bad tempered ginger who tackles like jackie chan

I completely shun the idea that footballers are rolemodels to children, or anyone for that matter, but it is fair to say that Paul Scholes seems pretty decent, for a Manc like.

They'll miss him.

I've never liked him tbh, probably because he was one of cocknose's favourite pets. An excellent player (in top 20 prem players) with wonderful vision but also fortunate enough to be part of an excellent side for many years. Not quite the world superstar that the media made him out to be for me - too many weaker points to his all-round game.

Nasty little fucker at times too.

Great player. Glad to see some of these cunts are starting to fuck off, thats Neville and Scholes in one season. Giggs and Ferguson next.

I agree to a point about footballers not being role models for kids but they also shouldn't be the antithesis of a role model which many of them are. How many kids were screaming at refs and feigning injury etc in youth leagues in the 1960's/70's. It's hard to get a sufficient number of referees these days for junior football because of the abuse they get from the kids and their parents.

Top player but he has a nasty streak a mile long, the fact the media found it somewhat endearing is what saved his reputation

One of the top 3 English players in the last 20 years.

Criminally wasted at international level.

I can't stand him. He might be a model pro, so in that respect fair play, but when he was at his peak he was one of the first to always go mouthing off in the papers pre-match articles about us.

He's the worst tackler in the Premiership and I'll never forgive the cunt for grabbing McAteer's arm at Old Trafford forcing a handball to win a penalty. Cheating cunt.

Giggs' recent exploits aside, I've always had a fair bit of admiration for him since he did an interview with our press after we won the treble. He was incredibly respectful towards Ged and when asked whether he thought our cups wins were 'lucky' he said "not a chance" and went on the stress how you make your own luck in football and that they were three of the best cup finals he's ever seen.

So yeah, give Scholes the "model pro" accolade, but as a rival he's acted the typical Manc too many times for me to stand here in admiration. Giggs on the other hand has expressed one of the few acts of respect towards this club that I've seen from United staff/players and for that he'll always be held in a higher regard than most players who've played for that club.

He never had an agent either. Whenever a contract was on the table he would just sign it regardless what was on offer. Obviously, the scum never took the piss with the offers though.

Denis Irwin has to hold the title for the least detested manc of recent times. As for Scholes, always thought a little overrated personally. Anyone who plays centre mid and couldn't time a tackle to save his life ( for his WHOLE career ), just shouldn't be given the plaudits he received. He was helped a lot by having the likes of Keane alongside him as well.

I'm glad that he's retired.

Yep, if only because it's one more player they have to spend money replacing.

I hope they just use Gibson

Never really noticed him being the football Messiah that many paint him as.... he was alright... glad he's retired.

Ah true - I meant in their private lives really. But also that has every much to do with the FA as it does the players. Competitive players will always push the limits on what they can get away with within the circumstances. Obviously in Rugby the Ref has a mic and he predominantly only speaks to the Captains and things are generally a lot better.

Football could have gone along with this years ago, but it's too slow and too stupid to see sense.

A few years ago Ferguson tried to convert him into a "second striker" playing off the front man. Scholes never really bought into it and they stopped trying after a few games, but I actually thought he was a fool to himself for not giving it a real go. He was always going to have a good career anyway, being so technically gifted and playing in that side [spit], but he could have toned down a disciplinary record which manages to be longer than it need have been AND nowhere near as long as it ought to be, given that Scholes tackled with all the finesse of a JCB right to the end.

i think gerrard said in his book that he was probably the most technically gifted footballer he's ever trained with, so he must be doin something right

to be fair though this is a guy that compared cole to messi

Gigs scholes keane beckham in their prime was awesome midfield...this united side don't have anything like that level yet annoyingly still win due to bent officials.
