Post match relief

it felt like we limped from the last international break to this one, just as we might have restored a little momentum it begins again...

good thing Sturridge isn't involved, shame Raheem is though

And breathe...... phew.

Pleasant surprise with our passing the ball and interchanges.

Cloggy, when are you coming to Liverpool? We need a bevvie, I think we would get on.

There was a thread last season if we really needed Suarez. Today we started with Lambert.... We need to up our game and movement when if we are to push a top four finish.

Why was it a pleasant surprise? Yes we've been on a poor run, but we've not turned shit overnight.

Well it was pleasant wasn't it after our poor run and a surprise we can actually still pass the ball a bit compared with our reason run.

Fair enough.

It's been a dismal few weeks alright but in our previous two seasons under Rodgers'; we've got stronger as the season's gone on and I see no reason why that won't be the case again - particularly with a few players coming back from injury, Sturridge being the most notable one.

Still some obvious concerns but we'll get there.

Some stats and comments from the match (mostly from Echo) :

Coutinho : whilst not at his best once more, brought a bit more control in the centre. His 94% pass accuracy is his best this season.
Henderson : the midfielder has now been involved in 40% of the Reds' league goals this season. Four chances created and 52 passes yesterday – third-highest in the Liverpool side.
Gerrard : had more touches than any other player, had a passing accuracy of 95% and made more chances – five – than any other player on the pitch, albeit some from set pieces.
Lallana : four dribbles. The Echo's Pearce & Walsh both gave him MoM.
Lambert : 33 touches in 64 minutes.

The Match (LFC first)
Shots : 19 (7) to 8 (4). Plus shots blocked 7 to 0. Accuracy 58.3% to 50%.
Possession : 54.6% to 45.4%. Passes 451 to 366. Passes Long : 13.5% to 19.4%. Accuracy 85.1% to 74.3%. Crosses 19 to 21.
Aerial Wins : 54.2% to 45.8%
Corners : 5 to 5
Tackles : 16 to 30. Won : 62.5% to 76.7%

Just to add :

A far better performance in terms of substance, against a team whose confidence was exceptionally high, particularly in the midfield and in the closing down which was reminiscent of last season.

Ming gave a far better impression of a keeper commanding his box, Lallana, Gerrard and Henderson were superb throughout .. I was surprised at Gerrard being full of running thru the full 90 mins after his 3 games in a week. Good tactical decisions by BR before and during the match.

I just didn't ever have the feeling that WBA were going to score, they had one or two half chances (which any team will get in any match) and I doubt they would have bar a ridiculous penalty decision (better to have them in matches you win though). We could and probably should have won this 2/3/4 to nil.

Whilst by no means more than a 6 or 7/10 performance overall it was a much improved, professional, performance (bar Lovren in the 2nd half) and a step in the right direction. Looking forward to having our currently injured players (Sturridge, Allen & Can) back after the International break.

Coutinho has been struggeling with a groin injury. Seems as though he's getting back to full fitness and a better performance yesterday.

Ok, have only read the first 4 posts cause I've got to get moving.

First off - I thought that was our best performance - bar the Spurs match - by some distance.

Ming looked determined to come out and command the area although he began to hold back late in the 2nd half.

Fullbacks; all played well IMO including glen Jo when he came on

Lovren and Skrtel looked to have their heads screwed on for most of the match. That said, while the pen was not a pen it was a pretty silly tackle from Lovren and probably got what it deserved.

Gerrard was good - not great - but he was good. He can still run and run and run but what is getting him as it gets all players is agility. Once he gets his quarry trapped he can stay with them easily and herd them into the corner. When he's caught chasing someone in the middle of the field he gets found out - not able to change direction with the same alacrity as he once was and smaller players get him off balance. Passing is still a thing of beauty.

Coutinho was good without reaching the heights of last season (or pre-season). What was really good was he didn't try to overplay his hand and that allowed everyone to work well.

Sterling - Wasn't his game but he was still good. Talent in abundance but couldn't make it pay the way he often can.

Henderson - his passion for LFC is akin to a scouser - he's going to be an honourary Liverpool boy before long if keeps this passion and commitment. Good goal, sensational running, tireless chasing.

Lallana - Last three matches has started to make me wonder if I was premature in saying we didn't sign anyone with a Suarez quality. His feet and touch are exquisite - making him a constant menace to anybody. Genuine class. But what he's got that reminds me of Suarez is the work ethic. His closing in defense was almost manic and I lost count of the number of errors it produced in that West Brom back line. He was outstanding for mine.

Lambert - read several commentators who claimed he did nothing which I thought was bollocks. He was great. The take down and immediate shot that stung Foster's hands was beautiful. I thought his work in attack, looking to make the run, making his presence felt was fantastic; his control was good and his willingness to get a shot off was great. His first goal isn't far off.

Mario - not the same as Lambert but he could have been played in a couple of times. He tried to make three runs for Sterling in quick succession and was ignored each time. He looked positive - not sulky which was great.

As said, the performance up front was reminiscent of last season. The back looked better to me. Add Sturridge to the mix and we look to be going forward which is a tremendous relief.

Aye, that was loads better. Still loads of room for improvement but glimpses of the high tempo attacking play of last season and was well impressed by Lallana and Henderson. I thought Lambert did well. He's not ever going to be good enough but at least he had a go and can control and hold the ball.

IMO in some ways the most encouraging thing was simply the fact that we grubbed out a result we badly needed against a side on a nice little run, despite a couple of awful reffing decisions which could quite easily have cost us at least two points. Of course more improvement is needed, plenty of it in some respects, but we dug in and found a way to win. Me likey.

Much better overall, but incredibly frustrating that their goal came from Manquillo needlessly giving the ball away under absolutely no pressure 70 yards from our goal...

I'm also starting to worry about Lovren... Not just the challange for their goal, but a couple of scream-at-the-tele moments from him. Hope he starts to eliminate those silly errors soon.

Overall though, much better and though they were fact and confident, I didn't see where they really troubled us too much, other than when we helped them out.

And it's worth remembering that, for all of the shite we've played and the fact that we've not really gotten going properly yet, we're one never-to-be-repeated Jagielka screamer away from being in 4th spot, having already traveled to a few of our traditionally troublesome grounds.... That, in and of itself is a positive. With the injured lads soon to return, I like us to start putting a run together now.

That gerrard Balotelli combo was nice near the end, and then bad shot, while Raheem was completely free to his right...but I liked seeing gerrard up the field

don't think rodgers would do it but it would be brilliant to see gerrard regularly played as AM, maybe we could do what city do and use him like toure, in the DM position then move him up in the last 20/30 mins

That's exactly how we should use him, when we're leading a game, it seems the best way for us to sure up the defence, bring on Lucas and sit Henderson alongside him. I'd also be tempted to play like this against Chelsea and City, but I don't think Rodgers would do that.

The quicker we become more settled at the back + DM then the more adventurous Jordan will become. He is a real asset to our attacking play and I hate seeing him hold back.

Over the last season or so we've often see him get into great positions but fluff the shot but I think its easier to teach shooting than it is natural instinct for when and where to arrive in the box.

Loving seeing him take up more and more natural leadership and responsibility on the pitch.
