This is exactly what we need to be doing, even if we can only spend 25 million per window that should be spent onthe best available even if that means just one player per window.

sauce sounds very unreliable, withholding excitement until more info emerges.

Boooo.

If this does come off, not only will we have signed a top player, we'll have done so in the teeth of competition from other big (and very rich) clubs, so it'll be important symbolically as well. Fingers crossed.

I think everyone is agreed on that. Easier said than done though. We've a job on our hands to attract such talent and in, as someone has said, the competition from other clubs who can offer much more attractive footballing options and potential rewards. If we can secure the such level of signings it's fantastic job done but we, as fans, should be aware of this and, even though we have high hopes, we have to accept some reality though. I'm still withholding a generous level of optimism currently though.

Yup, agreed Sunny.

Thing is, we're not competing in Europe next season so this might be work against us when signing the cream of the crop. However, we still need to sign players to improve the team. We might not be able to sign our first choice players simply because they do not want to come, as such we will have to sign our second or third choice players for the sake of improving the team.

From the same Portuguese paper:

Coentrao: Lateral will be Real Madrid

Eagles receive 25 million euros plus an amount for purposes which can reach five million. Vieira in the market for the successor.

By: Antonio Pereira / Antonio Ferreira Filipe

Fabio Coentrao will be a Real Madrid player. The agreement between eagles and meringues, to which the CM found to have been reached even before the Benfica-Sporting Lisbon (3-3), last game of the league. At the time, fired up the side of Light and said, "I present myself on June 22," when asked at the end of the meeting of what would be your future. But this should be the date for departure from 23 years of Portuguese international club where lined in the last four seasons (one and a half has been loaned to Zaragoza, the National and also to Rio Ave).

Benfica should engage in the business a value of around 25 million immediately, a sum that may rise to 30 million (the amount by objectives).

The direction of Florentino Perez has put on the table the central Argentine Garay to lower the price of Coentrao, an option that Luis Filipe Vieira refused. In fact, President incarnate always made it clear that the player only would the value of the termination clause (30 million).

While I agree with the principle, I don't think a left back will bridge the gap between us and the top four. Our priorities should be further up the pitch, so I would expect any significant outlay to be on midfielders/attackers. Coentrao would obviously be great, but he's more of a 'finishing touch', if you know what I mean.

That's agreed, unfortunately if Liverpool acts the way it usualy does (or did) it will spend 25 million on a winger and a LB ie Downing and Enrique, both of whom are better than what we have but neither of whom are top quality.

I'd rather stick with what we've got and get one top quality player in either position, as an example.

Coentrao - Marquee
Parker - Cheap(relative)
Aguero - Marquee
Dann - Cheap (relative)
Downing - Midrange

Honestly, and not having a go at anyone.

Why would anyone think, with our new mgmt, that we're only going to sign a LB?

Being linked with average players, for one thing 🙁

I dunno about that Avvy. Carroll and Suarez kinda came out of the blue. We building a squad here and replacing our crap players with average players, so that's an improvement of sorts. After sorting out that, we should be signing the marquee names.
