Taking The High Line ...

I understand why webare doing it, its high risk high reward. And Ive no doubt Thiago was signed with this in mind. But it relies on a relentless forward press to make it work, theres no value condensing the play into your opponents half if you allow an easy outball to bypass the entire defence in one go.

Ive a feeling Klopp has decided this is how he wants to play. A bit like Rafa and zonal marking, hes made up his mind and the players just dont seem ready or able to implement it.
 
Tbf, I remember the beginning of last season we were playing a more measured game and I am pretty sure we werent leaving ourselves exposed with 2 defenders as high as we have done recently? Or am I just remembering it incorrectly....

I wouldnt be surprised if Klopp alters the formation a bit going forward, most teams now double up on our wide men (Salah, Mane, Robbo, TAA). I thought with the introduction of Thiago he might look at going to a 4-2-3-1 with Thiago the centre of the 3 behind a striker. I suspect teams have worked out our tactics a little and it might be time to change the system up a bit.
 
At this time last season there was the exact same media noise about how we had a higher line than previous seasons, and then it settled down as we got used to it.

At this rate there will be Sky Sports articles in October 2025 talking about how we have moved our defensive line from the edge of the oppositions penalty area to the 6 yard box

Well that's just what the article is saying. And if teams double up on those 4 then it means there are gaping holes elsewhere that we need to be taking advantage of ... hence Thiago and being more advanced. Though we haven't been able to use Thiago yet and being more advanced without a strong midfield able to take advantage (Hendo, Thiago, Fabs) saw us slaughtered at Villa.

Bitching about articles doesn't alter the facts they are based on. If we are indeed 4m higher up the pitch then clearly that has had an impact, and not just in the Villa game, as we are conceding many more goals than expected.

I think its a very clear attempt to evolve the style of play, as more teams have sat deeper against us its gotten harder to get those turnovers in the final third that lead to direct goal scoring chances. The result is we push further up and try to pin teams in, cut off their oxygen and suffocate them. I suspect Thiago and the shift further up the pitch is an attempt to do it in a more controlled manner.

As happens with most changes in a well drilled unit it kind of throws the delicate balance off for a while until one of two things happens. Either the players adapt to it and it becomes the default or it falls apart and gets abandoned. We are in the unknown phase now, the lack of a prolonged preseason to bed in new ideas means we are laying the tracks while the train is in motion. If that Villa catastrophe happened preseason against PSG or Dortmund people wouldnt be arsed. But the learning curve is very costly mid season.

I wasn't bitching about it. I was just recalling that it was noted this time last year and was seen as a potential problem for us, but once the players got more used to it, the problem diminished. So I am expecting a similar improvement this year

The bit about the line being on the 18 yard box by 2025 was a joke, s'all.
