i think we might start phasing out carra a bit this season, itl be interesting to see how dann (if thats who we get) pairs up with kelly at CB if thats the case
Not so sure about that. Carra will only lose his place if the mistakes become more frequent.
No European football means 38 games plus a couple more depending on how far we make it in the cups. I think he'll start every premier league game, if he's fit.

I more interested in what will happen with Kelly, Skrtel, Agger and Dann(if he joins).
well maybe this seasons a bit premature, maybe the season after, i suppose we'll need him though with all the champions league games. just think that its a perfect time to start giving the youngsters more regular playing time, i mean if we get a CB and a LB will we put glenjo on the right? will it be carra and dann in the middle? doesnt seem right to have kelly on the bench with how well he's done for us. suppose its a good problem to have though
Basically yeah.

Reading these Clichy rumours has reminded me that we still have the likes of Insua and Konchesky on our books . We really need to do a massive clean out this summer also , that's for sure.

My big concern about all these signings is how we all have to be talked into being excited about them. No signing thus far is jumping out and saying "Next level". Look, I'm not being negative, but I was thinking this summer would feel a bit different to other "Garrett Barry/Robbie Keane" summers with steady eddies lined up around the place.

In fairness, £5M is a decent fee for him, so long as it doesn't climb too much.

I think I'd rather have him than Enrique. At the very least, he's excellent going forward. He's still young and with the right coaching, could end up as a much improved defender.

Clichy is an excellent players and CAN defend.

We thought David James and Brad Freidel were dodgy keepers and gave them away before we realised that the centre defence was the issue and similarly Clichy has received criticism over the last couple of seasons for his defending when the issue is their central defence are abysmal.

If central defenders are rubbish there is nothing a decent full back can do to compensate because you can't play your normal game as all the defender end up adapting to situations rather than controlling the situation.

Vermaelan, Koscielny, Squillaci, Senderos, Djourou etc, all shite defenders. When it comes to signing CB's Wenger just doesn't get it.

Looking past the dissapointment of it not being in anyway a glamorous signing personally i think that Clichy is a good deal, he is IMO one of the better left backs in the league and if we can get him cheap then its a no brainer...

He is a good player Clichy, like him.

I think Vermaelan can be pretty good. Their defence suffered when he got injured last season.

i think the same, exceptionally harsh on vermaelan by pesam

Vermaelen's absence probably cost them the league IMO.

That and still not addressing the Goaly position..... or striker position.... or defensive midfielder.

Talking of which unless you count Lucas who have we got as DM? we seem to be going for an all out attack midfield system!

Agree largely with Pesam. Even though he's been an inconsistent defender with Arsenal, the fact that he knows how to play football and has the natural tools to be an excellent defender makes me think that he'd improve considerably in a defensively disciplined side.

i don't think djourou is that bad either. hes been unlucky with a couple of injuries this season too

I thought he was terrible against England last week.

That was the worst I've seen him play in quite a while. I've been quite impressed with him at times in the past.

On his day he is actually a very good defender and he's very good going forward, the problem is it's very evident that he doesn't like playing against physical opponents like Carroll, Drogba, Rooney, Tevez etc whereas against the likes of Berbatov, Bent, Defoe etc he can look top quality sometimes.

How long as Clichy been at Arsenal? Was he there from a young enough age to be classed as home grown? It looks like we'll easily be reaching that criteria this season and not having to rush out and buy a 'home grown' player like Brad Jones again this time.

Came through as a youth player.... i suspect he is indeed home grown.

Djorou was one of the few Arsenal players with any real balls last season, a good player IMO.

He is, indeed.

Homegrown players
Nicklas Bendtner
Gael Clichy
Denilson
Johan Djourou
Cesc Fabregas
Vito Mannone
Alex Song

Clichy is an excellent football player, and a step change from our current options at left back. Period.

I suspect our interest will spur Arsenal into action, and they will offer him the deal he wants

i love how arsenals homegrown group isn't english
Or Welsh.

grjt is right, he is a gazillion miles better than what we were starting last season with.
Although with the emergence of Robinson, I would not want to stifle his fledgling career as I think he could become an excellent player, indeed he looks up to the task now, but it would be foolhardy to rely on a youngster based of half a dozen games.
Clichy might be a good signing.

regards

If we start games with Clichy & Johnson, would it be too much of a weird suggestion to bring up playing with a libero & 5 at the back (with two of the five being wing backs).

In the absence of a decent DM (Lucas is a more than competent midfielder, but is NOT a DM, or seemingly Kenny wanting one, I could see it working.

And no, I'm not just writing this to get Spider-Neil posting more.

this happens foxy, I'll never let you guys hear the end of it 😉

i've advocated wingbacks for a while. A sweeper would be beasty for us, a player like agger would be ideal for that role, but as he's made of glass we'll have a job finding another like him

i think we'll see that wingback formation fairly regularly this season, looks like we're getting the majority of our width from the back

I think Carra could do it, but I think also maybe I'm letting my red-tinted glasses obscure his age as a factor.
