il be happy to take the gamble on him, worst scenario is we'll have to go back to puttin glenjo back on the left, and im okay with this
Worse case scenario is that we've paid another 5M + wages for a squaddie. As I said earlier ... if we can't sign someone proven as better than Johnson on the left then what is the point because we already have squad backup for this position. Improve it or don't bother.

(Welcome Skev.)

In case anyone forgot, Konchesky cost us £4m + Lauri Dalla Valle and Alex Kacaniklic. :-[

there is nothing to be gained by adding him to the wage bill. he's not even as good as our current options for left back
Do you really think that 25 year old full back with over 200 premier league games to his name and experience in the Champions League for 5 million is a bad deal? If he wasnt in the last year of his contract he would cost at least double that price. If he comes here and is shit for 2 years we would still get that fee back, if the other options are Enrique and Baines for 10+ million then its a no brainer, plus neither of them are up to much defensively

and he is miles better than any left back we have, he had an awful season two years ago but last year arsenals defence was pretty mean considering they had a constant rotation of centre backs and comedy goalkeepers it reflects pretty well on Clichy, who was good and Sagna who was great. Anybody who thinks we would be better off with Glen Johnson at left back needs to rethink that, Johnson is a worse defender than Clichy and thats on his favoured right foot, on the left he will get mauled over the course of a season

If we pull this off I think its a fantastic piece of business

Clichy was at his best with pat rice screaming at him constantly telling him how to be a left back, we should bring phil thompson back to do the same - binnys right, clichy or konchesky!!? 5 million is nothing these days

IMO Magic conclusively disproved that bolded bit last season.

That said, if Kenny wants Clichy he'll have discussed it with Clarke, and if Clarke thinks he can spiff up Clichy's defending to the right standard that's good enough for me.

One interesting point some Arsenal fans have been making is that Clichys poor form has coincided with Arsenals change to a different formation - and the arrival of Arshavin who plays in front of him. He's got very little support from midfield nowadays. I thought it was an interesting point, if we were to return to a 4-4-2 id certainly be willing to give him another shot. Someone like Walcott actually doing a job protecting him might make a lot of difference.

You are misrepresenting his experience. That "experience" is in playing for arsenal, who play a totally different style of football, alongside totally different styles of player, taught to defend in a totally different way. So in relaitity the experiences of clichy are worthless to us. If we sign him, he will spend a year adapting. Or more correctly, he will spend a year getting raped.

If we sign a left back i'd rather it was a natural defender who's impossible to get past. So at least while he's learning to play with a new group of players, it wouldn't cause too much damage to our season.

Speaking of Drogba, I'm fairly amazed that a lot of what markmc called has been proven wrong (at least so far). Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't he have a blemish-less record so far?

Makes me thing there's been a significant change in the way things are being done at the club, with a lot less information going out. Very encouraging, if true.

Though a tad annoying too during the silly season.

I completely disagree with all of that, every team plays a different system defensively to one degree or another so arguing that he is used to playing a different style is not relevant especially as we dont really know how will set his team up. And having 5/6 years experience as a first team premiership player is certainly not worthless, he has already played against 95% of the guys he would be asked to mark next season, regardless of tactical formation employed at arsenal that must be considered an advantage over a player signed from another league or a youngster promoted from the reserves.

Besides most modern fullbacks are not 'natural defenders' as you put it, with the emphasis now for so many teams on pushing the full backs forward to provide width in the final thrid the defensive part of the game is not always the main focus. How many left back are there that you would honestly say are natural defenders?

Sorry but thats a stupid thing to say. Theo always tracks back and helps the full back. Just ask Glen Johnson.

That's the way you look at it, fair enough. I'm of the opinion Wickham has massive potential - big strong lad, mobile and has shown to be a cool finisher. Disappointed to lose out on him.

Clichy's Premiership proven alright, Premiership proven at being a calamitous left back. I've watched a lot of him over the years, and he's constantly the weak link for Arsenal which as i said in another post - that takes some doing when you're part of an Arsenal defence.
He's a horrendous defender and one i'm glad isn't coming to us. He's shite.

I agree we desperately need a left back though. Enrqiue should have been in the bag long ago.

I understand where you're coming from re the whinging but I don't agree with your assessment of Clichy as a player. I don't think he would represent a 'massive improvement' at all. In fact, I would rather have Glen Johnson at left back than Clichy. Or take a bit of time to bed Robinson into the side. Clichy is not a good defender, and hasn't done much of note going forward in recent seasons either. And his attitude stinks.

If we're going to sign a left back, it needs to be someone who will significantly improve the side. I'll be glad if City have got him, and I hope they have the same faith in him that you do because it will ultimately benefit us in the long run.

Clichy for 7 mill is a fantastic signing. I'll be gutted if we miss out. Still, seems strange City would go for him.

If so, selling him to City makes sense as they're the club who will pay the most.

They also signed Boateng, Kolarov, Milner and Dzeko(who might yet prove to be a good signing tbf) to name but 4 with their BOTTOMLESS PIT of money so what's your point?

They are all really, really good players as well - as is Clichy, which I assume is now your point.

The End - thanks for making it easy.

Like hell they are. All 4 of them have been massive flops. City go out and spend money foolishly as well as making good signings for example Silva and Tevez. However's it's not as if they're signing Europe's best.

As for Clichy, he's shit, and you'll find many Arsenal supporters of that opinion. His defensive game is horrendous.

City are better than us, have better players than us, and will pay him more money than us.

You can see why he'd be keener on going there can't you?
