Gettin’ Guehi with it

I think we’ll get Guehi. Palace have already lowered their asking price and it will surely be negotiated further down.

We need 4.

Virgil
Ibu
Another
And another.

No point in including Gomez.

You don't need to.

If it was under the previous owner, or if Schmadman was in charge, I'd be worried, but these lads likely have a back up option on the spreadsheets.

It's a game of Chicken. And 30M for a lad who can leave on a free in a few months is pretty generous. It's not like Trent and RM, where we had NO money offers from the cheapskates at RM.

I'm not trying to shit on Endo, cos I fucking love the guy and I'm so happy to have him in the squad, and he can definitely do a job at centre back, but thats it, an emergence measure, it's not his natural position.

The fact is we are effectively going into the season expecting a 5"10 defensive midfielder to start 30 odd games this season with our current set up, that's not good enough. Konate and Gomez have proven that they can't stay fit for a season, and our schedule is going to be intense this season, we need a new CB, otherwise selling Quansah was bizarre at best, at worst it highlights a flaw in Slot and his negative bias towards some players.

It's obvious the Quansah decision has come from him, be that through him deciding he should sold, or through him effectively forcing Quansah out of the door by ostracising him all last season.

Same things happened with Harvey, but we signed Wirtz, I love Harvey, but thats a ruthless but sensational upgrade, we have to do the same with Quansah, be that Guehi or some other centre back, if we don't we've massively fucked up, and for my money the blame falls entirely on Slot playing favourites and not being pragmatic.

Would be mental mismanagement to go with our current CBs into the next season. We didn’t look great defensively end of sesson and need options.

Not really a few months! Almost a year and a whole season. So I can see them battling this out. I would!

I think it was Quansah's social life that was the issue. It's the only thing that makes sense. He's got the best stats for any CB of his age and he wanted to play for us.

Agree it would be bonkers for us to throw money at Isak and not have another couple of CBs instead. Would go into the season half expecting us to blow a great chance instead of being as optimistic as hell.

I think it'll be down to managers decision there tbh. I don't think he rated quansah and felt he couldn't improve the things needed.

Don't know if I agree, but we'll have to see
I honestly think his off field antics did him more than his football ability.

Slot is going to opt for Endo & Gravy as his CB back ups, which is painful as Gravy is a player who should be rested during early cup games, not moved into a different role.

The parallels to signing Thiago into a team that then lost all of its CBs is looking to play out again here as we add Wirtz into a team with a 35 year old CB and two injury prone CBs. This would be a complete shocker.

It would if it did happen, but it won’t.
We’ll sign a CB before the transfer deadline.
There is a month left of the window today, so no need to panic.

I think it’s quite obvious that we are waiting for Palace to lower their demands. They’ve said that they want a sale this month, and we’re probably just waiting to see who blinks first.

I think we'll sign a CB, I just think we're biding our time. I think we want someone who is going to be able to play in place of either Virgil or Ibou, and we've got our eye on Guehi but don't want to overpay. I think it'll be a case of biding our time until closer to the end of the window because - at the moment - Virgil and Ibou are both fit etc. Gomez isn't out for long. And we don't want to come across as desperate because we want Palace to lower their asking price.

I also think we're after someone a lot younger because we don't really have any amazing CB prospects coming through, but we're in less of a rush about that.

Guehi is said to have already agreed terms so it's all on Palace now. Have they signed a replacement? I thought they did - in which case the sale will go ahead this Summer with the timing on who blinks first. Likely we will because we are the desperate ones.

I

Was it the Kabak, Philips, Rhys, Davies season?
Yeah, but with Hendo and Fabs doing stints in the backline before Christmas too. Big injuries to Virgil, Gomez and Matip that season. We went from having one of the longest undefeated runs at home in our history, to losing 6 consecutive games at Anfield. I'm getting PTSD just thinking about it. So yes, we definitely need 2 CBs please.

I have to believe there's a plan B or we have to get Lucky and Nallo into the first team. Endo is not a CB.

Yep. On top of this, it was the summer we broke our transfer philosophy and brought in Thiago (an older but very talented player) rather than someone in the 23-25 year old range. My view was that we wanted to try and make a marginal gain to our squad that was flying. However we added one of the best midfielders ever to wear our shirt to a squad where we had no CB cover and ended up scraping to 3rd via some minor miracles.

One extra decent CB in that squad and I genuinely think we would have title challenged again.

We obviously need to sign a CB but I don't think you can really legislate for having 2 ACLs to the same position in one season. We were mainly just unlucky in 20/21. Although FSG were fucking twats for not backing Klopp in the January, tbf.

We sold Lovren (i believe it was that summer) and we always **ALWAYS** knew that Matip was a sicknote. I think it was gross mismanagement. And if we don't bring in a starting quality CB this summer, I will think the same because we know that Ibu is due one of his usual injury breaks. Plus Gomez is already starting the season injured!

Fair enough, but it was still extremely unlucky. I think once that happened we were never retaining the title even with better cover.

I'm a big believer in sods law.

Spend big on a player? - injury incoming
Try and maximise output in one player at the expense of others? Dry spell incoming
Go in to a season shorts or CBs? Injury crisis incoming

We need to get a CB in to not tempt the fates at the very least.
