Gettin’ Guehi with it

Glasner probably told him he couldn’t guarantee him minutes in the side. Why on earth would any chose West Ham instead if that wasn’t the case.

The Palace fans aren’t happy either it seems. Guehi deserved his move, the money could have been invested and Glasner is a cunt that will most likely leave anyway.
Aye right, I'm sure they're devastated that their captain, best player and one of the premier CBs in the country has stayed put.

there was a video of guehi being arsey with glasner recently wasn’t there, i can’t imagine that situation has improved 🤣

Palace started off the transfer window chasing Diomande from Sporting, who was likely the preferred replacement - but didn’t get him.

I presume it’s because he was going to cost more than we were offering to pay for Guehi and why they were trying to push for a higher fee.

I think we did the right thing sticking to our valuation because £35m is a fair price for a CB going into the final year of his contract and “caving” to Palace’s demands for a higher fee isn’t a great negotiation strategy - if you look at all our other business we offer fair, even good price, none of this low-ball game playing, we eave a bit of wiggle room as you need to, but we won’t entertain selling sides trying to fleece us.

Same with selling - we’ll drive a hard but fair bargain.

I don’t think anyone can really complain about our approach.

I don’t think “we” are the ones that dropped the ball here - Guehi made it clear early on that he was happy to see out his contract and leave on a free and that he had no intention of signing a new contract. I’d imagine it has a lot to do with it being a World Cup year.

Maybe Palace thought they could leverage Guehi not agitating for a move into signing a new contract and demanding a huge fee like they’ve done in previous seasons. Can’t see it, they’re just giving away money - they’re not seeing £35m for him now, likely he’ll leave on a free.

For us, I guess that’s a straight replacement for Konate if he decides to leave on a free and I wouldn’t be surprised if we then look to sign another CB along with a midfielder or two (Harvey & Endo replacement) next summer (Wharton & Morgan Rogers likely to be on the list).

I think it's mainly our fault. I suspect we just didn't take seriously enough the possibility that Palace would fail to get in a replacement and by the time that became an issue it was too late to do much about it. I think we thought that they clearly want to sell and we don't need him urgently for the start of the season, so let's just let them stew as long as possible and drive the price down. 90% of the time that works and you save £5-10m, but we came unstuck on this occasion.

Hopefully we get it done in January and VVD and Konate stay fit.

I don't see how you can honestly feel this is on us... They were never selling him until they'd secured European football, but they knew we wanted him and that he wants us. They had months to locate his replacement, knowing that they needed one before the window shut.

We waited for them to secure European football, went back to them, a deal was done, and everybody was preparing videos and statements, etc... Then, out of absolutely nowhere, a deal that had nothing to do with us fell through on the last day, so CP fucked us (as is their right), and that's OUR fault? How?

I think we did, but didn’t see the signing as a priority enough to up the offer, given we signed Leoni, probably have a level of confidence that Gomez doesn’t have a serious issue and can be managed by the “new” medical team and we’ve likely got a pretty solid agreement with Guehi that he’ll be a Liverpool player by this time next year regardless.

I think it all hinged on whether he wanted to move this summer or not - and he’s clearly comfortable with leaving it for a year.

If he’s pissed off at anyone - then it’ll be Palace for flip-flopping around and changing their mind about selling or keeping him for one final year.

I think we (and Guehi) have been the ones totally clear and consistent throughout.

Can’t help but think this is some kind of providence at work - maybe Konate’s regular game time (which would be under threat if Guehi arrived) will lead to signing a new contract before January, maybe young Leoni will benefit from trial by fire or Gomez will finally score his goal (with his arse at the Etihad probably)…

Feel for the player, but we’re not in a bad situation - 4 senior CBs + Endo, same as last year.

Because I think your claim that I've bolded there is false. If it's true then you're probably right that we weren't at fault.

As for the how - I've explained it in detail a couple of times. If you need clarification on some point maybe refer to those posts?

I can see why we wanted the deal done yesterday. Alot could change in 3-4 months. Someone like Real Barca City might be sniffing around for a top CB and he does not exclusively need to be signing for us.

There is a risk.

Guehi isn't a dickhead. If we bid again, he'll join.

I don't get this, when did Konate become shit?
Not many teams in the Prem can boast a trio like Van Dijk, Konate and Gomez.
It's not about skill for me, it's about availability.
It’s not about their skills. Fit and healthy, VVD, Ibou and Joe are superb. But two of those are injury prone to say the least and we’ve been lucky perhaps that Virg has barely picked up a knock.
If they all stay fit, no problem.

OK, we're on the same page. I'd like to see the young bambino get a chance. The cup game will be interesting.

The problem is it could easily become a disaster if one of them gets a long-term injury, because all three should have their minutes managed. If one is out, the other two are playing most games in the league and CL.

You could make that argument for anything though. Guehi comes in and does his ACL, then we rue getting him early. Yes, ibou and Gomez are quite injury prone, But that's why we've got Leoni. If both get injured then we'd be thin on the ground and reliant on a 5th choice cb anyway

The way yesterday panned out, I'd rather Guehi didn't get over the line than Isak.

Exactly and I don't understand why everyone in the media has written off Konate.
Don't get me wrong Guehi is a good defender but Konate is just as good and he proved that last Sunday. Also, he's not injured again, it was cramp. He's still in the France squad.

at this time though it looks like konate is off next summer, would’ve been nice to get guehi acclimatised and evaluated with a view to even making some money on ibou in january

still hope he stays though obviously

We were being proactive, just incase Ibou does go for free, and that's a very very sensible play (as we did with mamardashvilli last year). But him not being here ideally won't impact us massively. If ibou stays, then amazing, we can have a fantastic depth at the back.

All I know is the sculpted gigante Leoni will now get more minutes.

Yeh he’s a really interesting wild card. Not cheap for a young lad so he’s clearly got the skillset. If he hits the ground running, that would be amazing.

I’m secretly hoping the management rate him highly enough to not worry about injuries to the main three and that Guehi was an opportunistic signing that can wait.
