So there's the obvious ones like Camara etc..

But who have you thought was a nailed on success after a few games? For me it's:

Josemi: Spanish Carra..blasphemy now as it seems, he was awesome initially.
Warnock? Maxi? Etc

Also who do you think may fall under this category in the future? Way too early to say, but what's the harm in speculation.

'Speedy' Gonzalez.

The way this lad was hyped was almost unreal.

Until he actually played.

Disagreeing with a particular signing is one thing (most of us thought from the start that Voronin and Degen, for example, were going to fail) but actually trying to pick players who might fall away after a good start seems a bit of a pity TBH.

As far as previous "misconceptions" are concerned, for me it's hard to look past Kewell. I was chuffed to monkeys when we signed him. Seems incredible to think back on it now.

Josemi was skinned for pace by Pederson in his second league game away at Bolton. He was so shit.

Kewell is a great shout. I'll throw Babel's name into the ring too. Big fee, great rep and looked to be good in his first few games. But he was braindead and offered fuck all from the start and his impact as a sub eventually disappeared too.

TBF Collymore and Robbie were the dog's that first season together.

Exactly and then he went shit. That WAS the question wasn't it?

Started good - went shit

Fair point, although all the examples in the original post proved to be disappointments fairly quickly after their debuts whereas Collymore took a lot longer.

That was the point, I said first few games. To save confusion we shall say a season?
Another example is Heskey.

Morientes.....him having played so well for Monaco and spearheading their champions league final appearance I thought he'd be ace for us as well.....turns out we didnt need him to go one better though as he watched on cup tied from the sideline 8)

Three good shouts there. Diouf was one of the immediate variety. Heskey on the other hand was unplayable that first season in Owen's absence. It wasn't until both his club and his international managers made him become Owen's bag-carrier that his performances began to slide. Morientes was a real shame - good footballer and team man, desperate to do well for us but never, ever going to be suited here.

Although he's still an irrational favourite of mine, Baros suffered a steady decline in ny estimations.

I thought Bellamy would do very well for us.

Also expected a lot more from Litmanen when we signed him

Insua. Some great appearances when he broke on to the scene. Then shite

To my recollection it never really went to shit. We had an up and coming striker named M. Owen on our books who threatened to leave if he did get more opportunities.
Collymore was starting to act mental behind the scenes as well. We sold him at his peak. His performances hadnt dipped.

Same here, but I doubt it was all his fault that it didn't happen.

I don't think Owen was threatening to leave. He was only 17 at the time.

Collymore was very good in his first season but not as good in his second.

Pongolle too... Not his first start but that game against Leeds(2goals) was one of his first. Came on as a sub I believe.

Modo in bullshitting shocker?

Youre right Richey, Owen was simply a great option (no threats of looking to leave); Collymore had been excellent, but had refused to move up from the midlands, and had an attitude that stank - plus Villa offered us 6m for the mentalist wife beater.

Stephen Wright, and to a lesser extent David Thompson
[/quote]

I'd have put it the other way round. I never thought Wright was very good at all but Thompson looked like he was going to be a great little player

I thought Wright was OK. He never recovered from being thought a lesser player than Papa Smurf by our management at the time.

Thompson's a great shout. Bit of a long shot(and I know I could find out on google, couldn't be arsed) but anyone remember that game against Sheffield wednesday when him and Gerrard scored?
Thought they were both going to be stars.
