Liverpool's Champions League return will help attract stars, says club managing director
Ian Ayre plans summer spending spree after return to European elite

Liverpool’s Champions League return will enable them to compete at the higher end of the transfer market this summer, according to managing director Ian Ayre.
Brendan Rodgers’ side confirmed their place in the group stages of the competition over the weekend, an achievement barely celebrated given the spiralling aspirations of a title challenge.
Returning to the European elite for the first time since 2009 was the immediate priority this season, another major step taken in restoring Liverpool’s historic status.
Ayre admits the period of exile made it difficult for the club to attract and retain the most talented stars. He says clubs cannot expect their past reputation to count in their favour when competing for the stellar names unless they have Champions League football to offer.
“Absolutely. You get a little bit of that, but there is definitely a challenge. That’s the reality,” said Ayre.

“It has always been tougher in the transfer market when you are not competing at the highest level. We had the issue with Luis [Suarez] last summer because he wanted to play in the best games against the best players. That is always a factor. We have always been fortunate to be able to bring great players here despite that but there is no question it opens up a few doors for us and makes it a little bit easier.
“Even when you step through that door, there are still a lot of others trying to get the same players.”
In real terms it is worth an estimated £30 million in Uefa revenue to the club, although the costs associated with qualification – including players’ bonuses – will swallow much of that sum before a ball is kicked.
Liverpool anticipate they will make around £20 million from their participation, which they are vowing to reinvest into the squad ahead of next season. On top of the usual summer transfer kitty, Rodgers can expect significant additional funds at the end of the campaign.
Liverpool’s owner, the Fenway Sports Group, has never put a public figure on the amount available, but it would be no surprise if the club spent in excess of £50 million on new talent ahead of the next campaign.
“There is no question we always expected that the squad we need for next season will be very different to the squad that we have needed for this year when we were not playing in Europe,” Ayre said.
“It will cost what it costs when we decide who the manager wants to buy. That has always been on the cards. It is fairly obvious that we set out with an ambition to get into the Champions League.
“What we achieved on Sunday was massive. This isn’t just about getting in the qualifiers. We are guaranteed Champions League football. It is an unbelievable achievement from where we were. It is what we set out for but if you were taking bets at the start of the season, you’d have said fourth place would be a great achievement. Now we are guaranteed third and we are determined to push on. It is all important for what we are trying to achieve.”

Some other papers saying £60m-£70m. Seems a bit far fetched, but it should be a big summer regardless. I just hope we sign up Linnet asap.

If we win the league we'll get approx 50m from the cl just for the group stages. That's just TV money.

Another 10m from standard chartered for cl qualification.

There's 60m straight off the bat.

60-70m budget seems about right to me.

I think we need to spend big on Midfield and obviously we need to strengthen the FB positions. We don't have that much coming though there immediately.

We have a young right back coming through who's very highly rated, going by the captivating name of Trent Arnold.

Unfortunately he's due to star in several Mills and Boon novellas once he reaches full sexual bloom.

Don't forget, well also be selling.

We've got a lot of players on the fringes who's in the danger zone:

Touré
Aspas
Coates
Kelly
Assaidi
Reina
Borini
Coady
Wisdom
Robinson
Adorjan
Alberto

£20 million minimum. We'll get about 5 mill for Reina, 7 mill for Borini, 4 mill for Assaidi, 4 mill for Aspas.

I hope we just spend wisely ... Let's not do what we did last time we had big money. Find the next batch of Studges, Coutinhos etc ... and 50 million on Pogba obviously.

One article links us to Kono and Mkhi. I doub't we'd be buying both. I'd like both but I'm greedy.

I'd buy that young mid from Inter and Konoplyanka.

er.. I noticed Agger, and Lucas not on that list - but I think there are possibilities they may be sold too.

Also it is unfortunate that it is a world cup year - hope we don't go mad after seeing some good African players on display and splash the cash like crazy. You know what happened last time.

If you look again Johnson isn't on that list either. Those players are more likely to leave than others.

This is my worry. BR has done wonders with the team. But his transfers have been hit and miss for me...

I saw that too. Not sure quite how they think we're going to sign Mkhitaryan from Dortmund a year after he went there for big money. They'd want a big profit, surely, even in the unlikely event of them agreeing to sell.

Unless they get kagawa back. We're gonna sign some sexy players. Rodgers is shit at signing squad players but has a good eye for first team contenders

I just realized something - after so many years of hoping X or Y player joins our club. For some reason I don't give a shit a this summer coz looking around all the leagues - I don't see any great players around that I really really want at our club. It feels like the old days from those clips - where the manager will go out and just get someone who none of us know about but they have been studying and following through the scouts.

Our bench against Norwich was comically bad. As it stands we are hopelessly unequipped to deal with the Champions League so will need to spend heavily and spend it well. Rodgers needs to improve in identifying the correct players for this club.

When people criticise Rodgers' signings, which ones are they referring to? Cos I've no idea which ones he's chosen and which he hasn't, and which have been joint decisions with the rest of the 'transfer committee'.

Holy cow, first summer in 5 years we don't have to worry about being attractive to signings. It's more like, " of course you want to sign for us"... I feel like john travolta going into the summer. Peacock...

Yeah - I noticed that too, was laughing thinking - oh..sh*t all we really have to change the game is already on the pitch. Ain't no one going to come on and change anything if things go bad.

Asspass, borini, Alberto, sakho and Allen to some degree. May even be that we end up adding Mng to that list. Really still not convinced.
Oh, and the loan trio of cissokho, Moses and sahin.

I'm certain Allen and Borini were his choices, and Sahin. Much less sure about the others.

IMO since it's become clear that he now has to work as part of a committee, our reported targets have been much, much, better. Ironically, a couple of the players we've actually signed have been the worst of all: Aspas and Alberto. But generally I think all the rumours around the players we've identified going back to last summer have been very encouraging.

We say this every year nearly. I'll believe we're loaded when we're signing Messi and Ronaldo. Not getting pipped to signings by Spurs.

And yes I know it's changed since we're top of the league, but we won the CL and signed Crouch so...

Touré, Aspas, Coates, Kelly, Assaidi, Reina, Borini, Coady, Wisdom, Robinson, Adorjan ,Alberto

Of this list, I think Touré will stay. It's the final year of his contract and I think he'll probably retire after that. He's gave us some good minutes and a couple of proper howlers, but somehow, he looks like a good veteran to have in the dressing room and training ground.

Reina, Coates, Assaidi, Adorjan - all gone.

I think Rodgers will talk to the rest and give the ones who want to stay and fight for a place in the squad a fair chance during the pre-season and make up his mind then what to do with them.

Kelly will go as well imo.

On loan maybe. Who will buy him when he's hardly kicked a ball in 2 seasons? I think for his sake and ours, he should go on loan to a club in the lower half of the table or a newly-promoted club and get himself a proper season's minutes.

I think we should make a move for Mario Mandzukic. A good striker, and will offer us something different up front - doesn't like to drop off and collect the ball &like Suarez/Sturridge ... likes to stay on the last man, and is always in that 6 yard box to finish off a move.

With Lewandowski's arrival, surely Mario is on his way out?

Could be a shrewd piece of business - has a very good goal scoring record for Bayern, and definitely won't cost mega bucks like a Diego Costa, Cavani or Falcao.

This is my worry. BR has done wonders with the team. But his transfers have been hit and miss for me...

Nooo. They really haven't. TBH this opinion bugs the hell out of me.

Nobody in football realistically expects a 100% success rate, or anywhere near it - not even Real Madrid or Barca achieve that buying the world's best players. BR is well well up there with the best in PL as far as quality of player and value for money is concerned. Don't believe me ? Look at the PL table.

CRAP
Aspas
Luis Alberto
Assaidi

GOOD
Sturridge
Mignolet
Sakho
Allen
Coutinho

50/50
Toure - has had his moments and fair share of fuckups
Borini - injured last season, doing well this season at Sunderland to his credit
Ilori - loaned out, hard to say ... maybe another season on loan before we see him in LFC colours
