i've advocated wingbacks for a while. A sweeper would be beasty for us, a player like agger would be ideal for that role, but as he's made of glass we'll have a job finding another like him
I think Carra could do it, but I think also maybe I'm letting my red-tinted glasses obscure his age as a factor.
i don't think carra could do it at all, as he's all action and gung ho. i think itd have to be a player who can play the ball better and doesn't dive in
agger would be perfect but he can't be relied on.
yup. can't really think of many other players who could do the role well.

doubt we'd play that way though

£5mill is a steal and he's still young. Clichy and Johnson on the flanks would be devastating when it comes to unlocking teams down, especially if we continue to play narrow football..

That's like a spider-neil wet dream.

Mostly positive comments about Clichy in this thread, i can why as he's a quick and exciting player on his day.

However, the lad can't defend for toffee and is often the weak link in Arsenal's defence - wihich takes some doing. He's horribly out of position regularly, he's rash when making challenges and weak in the tackle.

£5m or not, i'd give Clichy a miss.

I reckon Clarke can get Clichy defending again TBH. A few folks on Twitter claim that Kenny's not keen though, & Comolli has made initial contact but Kenny will veto it.

The Clichy cliche that "he can't defend" is incorrect and for £5m we'd be crazy not to sign him.

Few people saying it's a smokescreen for Enrique, even Baines but can't imagine Everton doing business there.

Izaguirre at Celtic is a player we should be looking at. He's ace.

Clichy reminds me a bit of Micah Richards, not in size obviously but they both rely on pace to get themselves out of trouble.

They can be defensively suspect but use pace to recover. I love watching Clichy bomb down the wing at times for Arsenal but his positional sense isn't the best. I don't think Enrique is the best defender either so maybe Clichy at 5million would represent better value.

Perhaps Clarke can work on him, Johnson's defensive game has improved of late. Coincidence?

Clichy has been rumored to move on with ages and Arsenal has Gibbs waiting in the wings, who is a better play in my eyes. Will Arsenal sell to us?

I've been reliably informed that Everton have blanked Comolli at every attempt he's made to get in touch, not even a response, simply not returning his calls.

Mate i watch loads of football, and Clichy's been brutal for Arsenal in the last one or two years.

I can understand why people would be interested though, he's possibly the quickest player in the league and when he's bombing forward he's a threat. But for me, he's just too calamitous when it comes to defending.

Yes. I'd love to see Izaguirre in a Liverpool shirt aswell. To win the Player of the Year award at full-back is some achievement.

Re: Deal for Gael Clichy rumoured

Izaguirre is great in attack but I wonder how he'll do defnsively in the prem.

I don't know what people are talking about. Clichy I'd a solid FB, like and FB that gets forward he gets caugt sometimes but for the most part he's quick enough to make it back.

I'll be well chuffed if we sign him

Wasn't it Comolli that 'discovered' him for Arsenal?!

Your right. Although I live in hope that he has just became disillusioned at Arsenal and a change of scenery might get him playing well again...

He used to be very good, so hopefully he can go back to that level.

Of course we should sign him if we can.

Think about all of the crappy left backs we have had and the money we have wasted on them. Here we are looking at a relatively young player, proven at the top level, 'homegrown' and at only 5 million. What is there not to like there?

He should be able to. If not then there is a problem.

The manager should never be forced to use players he doesn't rate

Of course he would, he picks the team. What would be the point in Camoli going out and signing a bunch of players for Kenny to never play them?!

I was gonna add something about Spidey being silly, but then I didn't want you to cry off again

*winky*

Comolli confirmed that Kenny gets the final say on all players. I just cant be bothered to look for the article.

Wasn't there a report saying transfer targets will be decided by three-man panel of Damien Comolli, the manager and chief executive?

Director of football, manager and chief executive can each veto a move.

But that describes the whole Arsenal defence over the last few years - if Clichy played in a solid unit he'd look very good.

*Edit: And I've just noticed above that you suggested Izaguirre as an option! He's okay but not in the same league as Clichy.
