Gettin’ Guehi with it

I think Leoni is a most interesting signing. Just imagine if he does have the skill and brains to be a top defender. Strikers will shit themselves

It is what it is. We bid a fair price and were right to stand by our bid. Glasner wanted two CBs in to fill the gap in the squad and didn't get both, so I don't blame him for digging his heels in when it became clear that he wasn't going to. Guehi has shown a top professional attitude all along.

If it's meant to happen it will, either next Jan.or in the summer.

You could make that argument for anything though. Guehi comes in and does his ACL, then we rue getting him early. Yes, ibou and Gomez are quite injury prone, But that's why we've got Leoni. If both get injured then we'd be thin on the ground and reliant on a 5th choice cb anyway

The way yesterday panned out, I'd rather Guehi didn't get over the line than Isak.
I agree Fabs, re Isak. I was thinking exactly the same this morning, the general consensus would be that most (if not all) fans would prefer to have got Isak over Guehi, even though either one could prove vitally important. We 'can' get by without Guehi, I agree and I think we might get him in January anyway. It's probably worth seeing how Palace do in the cups, if they are out of Europe and the League Cup by then and doing so-so in the league, it might be a no brainer for both of us. Or we hold out and get him for free, whatever.

I don't think it's risk free though, we took a gamble and it ultimately backfired on the player, so who knows what he's thinking right now about our part in all of this.

[Ed Aarons] Told that Marc Guehi is extremely unhappy after being denied a move to Liverpool at the last minute yesterday and feels he behaved correctly by continuing to play before Crystal Palace pulled the plug on a £35m deal. Understand that Guehi is planning to release a statement soon

Because I think your claim that I've bolded there is false. If it's true then you're probably right that we weren't at fault.

As for the how - I've explained it in detail a couple of times. If you need clarification on some point maybe refer to those posts?
I understand the words that you've used, mate... I just don't understand why you've (in those same words) chosen to believe them, when all reasonable evidence points to the scenario that many of us have outlined as being the probably one.

Anyway, I'm not gonna fall out with you about it... I'm just surprised by your stance, is all.

I'm not going to fall out with anyone over it either. I'm not mad at the club or anything and I don't think it's much more than a minor inconvenience to get him in January instead. I just think they gambled and lost.

Other people seem to think he was never for sale - even back in June - until they got these qualifiers in August out of the way. That doesn't sound very plausible to me. Has there even been reporting to that effect? Or are people just guessing? My impression was the qualifiers became an issue - for the Eze sale, at least - when those games were IMMINENT, and therefore when 1. they'd have almost certainly been disadvantaged in those games and 2. asking players to wait another ~week was much more reasonable than asking them to wait about 2 months.

Dunno, my interpretation just seems like the common sense one to me.

I’d love to get Guehi in Jan, but then, all the big European teams can start talking to him and offering him big big wages at that point.
I’m sure he’s still very keen to join us, but who wouldn’t want a top player on a free? There will be plenty of suitors I’m sure.
Thankfully, he behaved impeccably and honourably so I’m sure if he’s agreed to come to us in Jan, he will.

It is so clearly not about money so I’m not stressed. He’s no ‘dreamer’

Yeah, now he pissed off because he did the right thing, deal was done and Oalace pulled it at the last minute.

Talk of him considering giving up the captaincy.

I have no doubt he’ll likely tell Palace they need to find a replacement for January and the deal gets completed then.

Well likely offer a fair price around that £15m-£20m mark and this gets done.

Could be that he's Konate's replacement. Ibou leaves for free in the summer

If Konate has not signed before Christmas, he’ll be off.

Konate won’t leave this season - no way we disrupt our defence midway through the season by selling him for, likely, less than we’d be paying for Guehi in January.

One report today suggests Palace wanted £55m - which, in my opinion, stacks up with the theory that the rumoured interest of City and Chelsea at various points during the summer was an attempt to “panic” us into upping our bid.

Clearly didn’t work.

They’re trying to get him to sign a new contract now - why would he, even if he got a £35m release clause inserted and an increase in wages - he’ll earn more by leaving on a free.

It’s clear as day we didn’t fuck this up at all - Palace agreed to our £35m offer - the fuck up was Palace’s - you could see it the minute Glasner talked about not letting him go and Parish said they couldn’t afford to lose out on a transfer fee.

I’m sure they try and quietly hawk him round other clubs and there’ll be stories of pre-contract offers from big European clubs - all designed to extract as large a fee as possible by panicking us into buying in January.

Thing is - we’ve already agreed terms with him and have clearly sold him on the “project” - we’ll absolutely be in close contact with him and his advisors - and given his conduct thus far, it would be beyond strange if he suddenly got all money hungry and started looking around for other options.

I think the only way he’s not a Liverpool player by next season is if we change our minds.

I wasn’t suggesting he’d leave in January. Simply, indicating if a new contract has not been signed, he will be leaving at the end of his current contract.
