Florian and the (Slot) Machine

No - his replacement won us the game
No - his replacement was involved in the build up to the winner
Yes - came off after the goal
No - his replacement created more in 8 mins than he did in 85.
The funny thing is, the time he was on the pitch the goal was scored from a direct freekick.

I wasnt expecting him to tear up the record books in the first month, but I was expecting more than neat and tidy

He was good in the second half yesterday, once we got tighter to him the intricate passing in tight space started happening, it started to come together and you could see what he can be and do. Firmino was this 'bad' at the start, I can't believe people are even fretting about it yet. We're top with plenty of room for improvement and the newbies haven't even touched the sides yet. You knew there would be transition, this is transition but we're not doing a United, we're doing the bare minimum and top. Perspective.

I'm not fretting, I'm just disappointed. Lucas was neat and tidy FFS.

Can't wait for someone to tell us how wrong we were and how he's been great since day 1, when he finally manages to contribute.

Funnily enough, was thinking yesterday that the impassioned defences of Wirtz remind me of the same "you don't just don't understand football?!?!" for Lucas.

Anyways, before Hansern gets too mad at me, I'm not directly comparing the two, it's just been a slow start and there is an clear divide between those who have no problem calling it out and those that aren't.

It was always a significant risk. I still think he’ll come good but how good is yet to be determined. As long as we keep winning while he finds his feet it’s not a big deal but he’s extremely fortunate that his teammates have bailed him out so far or the presssure and talk would be far greater than a few keyboard warriors on SCM 😂

Of course, the argument for the slow start could also be that Macca, gakpo and Salah have all been fucking muck, so it's difficult to do your best work with shite all around

Wirtz is a quality player for those who have St Pauli as a second team. Football hipsters.

Let’s call a spade a spade, the passionate defence of Wirtz is a direct result of me highlighting the huge risk that this was the likely starter for him and it was a big gamble paying what we did for him 😉

i think i’ve had a foot on the fence and a foot in the he’s shit camp but he was alright yesterday imo. there were bigger problems on the pitch (although they didn’t cost 100m+)

Wirtz will improve, but a lot needs to fall into place first. He has to build strength across his whole body, particularly his core, as he’s far too easy to knock off the ball. He also needs time to develop a better understanding of his teammates. I don’t think it’s fair to call him a passenger or a luxury player because his work rate is clear for all to see. I just expected him to be good enough to be an automatic starter while he settled into the Premier League, so it’s disappointing that the performances aren't justifying that. If Gravenberch, Mac Allister, and Szoboszlai were all fit and firing, he couldn’t really complain about being rotated.

Wirtz needs to be watching videos of Palmer every day to see how an attacking midfielder can succeed in the Premier League, whilst lifting weights and eating steak.

I compared him so far this season to Elliott last season. Similar minutes played. Stark contrast with the output.

The problem for Wirtz is I think we probably could've got Cole Palmer for £115m so that's the standard he's aspiring to.

That's before you get to still great but much cheaper options like Eze, Gibbs-White, and Morgan Rogers.

No chance in hell any club could get Palmer for 115m from Chelsea. No chance.
Declan Rice cost 105m from West Ham two years ago. Grealish cost 100m 4 years ago.
He's better than both of them and attackers are costing a premium these days.

Wirtz, Palmer and Elliot are all the same age.

Palmer and Elliot have each played ~86 more premier league matches than Wirtz has.

They also didn't have to settle into a new country with a new language.

Is this all because he cost 100m?

I mean, on the face of it, judging a 22 year old after 4 games in a new league is kinda ridiculous.

Are they? Prices seem to have stagnated since those signings if you ask me.
