You have to win the CL and arguably league to win the Balon D’Or. If he does that I’ll happily say it worked out well.
That’s never going to happen though so I’m safe enough.
I think he has grown into this team and league quicker than a lot of us feared he would after looking off-the-pace in the first couple of games.
He & Ekitike have developed a great connection, and his work rate combined with Dom's work rate is a major asset in the final third.
I'm not convinced he fits in a 433 but he's making things happen and for me isn't part of the problem. I hope we find a way to get the best out of all of Wirtz, Ekitike & Dom. This likely means a pacy attacker around them up front and more solidity behind them.

Wirtz will always be judged against a very high benchmark, given the fee we paid. Longevity matters as well. If he’s here into his thirties and gives us eight or nine strong years, I would not doubt for a second that he’ll justify the outlay. If he walks on a free in four years, the conversation may look different. There’s also a wider point. We’ve paid what feels like a superstar fee, but there's a valid argument that superstars today are a) not as good and/or b) far fewer of them, and that isn’t nostalgia talking. Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Adriano, Henry, Zidane, Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rooney, Raul, Totti, Del Piero, Crespo, Riquelme, Klose, Drogba, Eto’o, Luis Figo, Robinho, Inzaghi, Villa, Torres, Tevez, Shevchenko, Ibra, Larsson, Robben, Van Persi & Nedved all played in the 06 World Cup. The state of that list compared to anything that will feature in the next World Cup is absurd. I solely blame that dog fucker, the other side of the Pennines and everyone who copied him. Why do people think we play 4-3-3.
It's 4-2-3-1. There's very clearly an attacking mid ahead of the two central midfielders. It's been like that since the very first game under Slot.

Because a 4-2-3-1 would have a clear double pivot (think of our Benitez teams), while under Slot we tend to leave just one midfielder back when attacking.
It's fluid of course, but generally we play 4-3-3 in both attack and defence I think.

I like Wirtz. We bought him for the future. He has been playing very well, though I agree not quite as much in the last few games.
Given he was bought for the long term, the idea of assessing his value now is silly, but if we have to, of course he isn't worth it. Will he be worth it? I don't know, but he's clearly not a bust.

We need players who will stretch play and get doubled due to pace, and he will have more space to operate in.
