I think he should be given a chance there. The lad is built like a CB, strong in the air, quick, a good tackler.
I've seen him play there for the reserves and he doesn't look out of place.

Trial him at pre season but its a massive risk if we're losing coates and skrtel (maybe)

Well, I don't think he would be a massive risk...Coates wasn't exactly puling up trees, pre season, carling cup games etc...

He has the basic tools, strength, speed etc...he also has played a few games and so shouldn't be overawed.

If we lose both i mean. If we lose coates alone then we should be grand, but coates, skrtel and carra going? We would need to buy a new CB and it might as well a strong beast to partner agger.

I've still got high hopes for Kelly.

So far I've also liked the look of Wisdom despite being played out of position.

Even if all three should go I think a case could be made of only one strong beast being brought in to partner Agger, Wisdom and Kelly.

I wouldn't be against Kelly getting a few games at centre back, maybe at the end of the season if the pressure is off.

I'm looking forward to Kelly returning. He is another player who has a good combination of raw talent and determination to give it his all and those are the kind of players that we need to nurture here (like Carra back in the day)

Our centre backs are inexplicably dicking around on the touchline for most of the game, so someone like Kelly is perfect for Rodgers.

Also his comments are totally disingeneous it's almost comical. All this time he has been a right back, and suddenly now after Wisdom has taken his spot whilst Carragher is retiring, now he comes out to declare he's also a centre back after all. Lol he isn't fooling anyone with his silly attempt to be clever.

Thankfully he's a good defender and Rodgers is also a fool. So it will work out for the best.

His injury record is too dodgy to be taking a chance if we're losing 2 or 3 center halves this summer. We need to buy!! If last summer taught the current owners anything its that we cant afford to leave ourselves short in positions that we need to strengthen.

Er... he's always been a centreback. Just plays full back in the 1st team. Just like Carra he will move into his favoured position when ready.

Wisdom is also a CB... Would be interesting to see either of them rotated in that role along with Agger/Carra/Skrtel in the final stages of the season. Agree that we definitely need to buy another CB but lets also not compeltely write off those who are on the fringes of the team like Kelly and Wisdom

I'd just say that if we are going to move Coates on which seems fairly likely, then I'd prefer to use Wisodm and Kelly as his replacements. Still go out and buy an experienced first choice centre half if needed, obviously.

Yes. That's probably his ideal position too and the squad desperately needs him to play there now. But he also happily played left back on loan. He played the last few years as a right-back for us. And he was more than happy to pretend he was a right back when it gave him a route into the England team.

Now all of a sudden it is in his interests to be a centre back again, he starts making these innocuous remarks as if the last three years never happened. I don't mind as in another three years he'll have become our best defender and undroppable. But still I don't like being taken for a fool. He should just be honest about it rather than trying to reinvent history as if nobody will notice what he is actually up to.

We are loosing 2-4 CBs this summer. Wilson will be going too.

You can't get bolder than that. But personally I've got plenty of faith in Kelly, I think he'll reach a similar stature to Carra if he gets the luck everyone needs to realise their potential.

Isn't it funny how Coates seems to be the only CB with first team experience at the club that hasn't played as a FB.

Agger, Skrtel, Carragher, Kelly & Wisdom all have.

Maybe that's why Coates had been do shit.

It ceases to be funny once you find the answer. Our centrebacks play out wide as fullbacks. Or more accurately like a pair of fanny flaps either side of a gaping hole.

A hole which is sporadically filled by Reina and Lucas. That's the answer. Our centrebacks are Reina and Lucas because Rodgers thinks that makes sense.

Which is exactly the way Barca line up when they attack. Only difference being they have centre backs that are mobile enough to be able to work that way.
He'll definitely be in for a new cb in the summer, and I also think Kelly's quick enough to be able to do it, though I'm not sure how comfortable he'd be on the ball when he's got two forwards pressuring him while we do the tippy tappy thing in our own penalty area.

One thing worth noting is that his injuries have come from him rampaging down the right flank and overstretching his hamstring, that would be less likely at centre back.

Oooh. Not sure about that. Look at the number of counter attacks we're vulnerable enough to be on the end of in most games.
I know it's nowhere near as much sprinting as a fullback ordered to do overlaps, but he'll still be under pressure to sprint quite a few times during games at cb. Much more so than he'd have to have done under managers like Houllier and Rafa.
