Meireles

The issue of wages might be valid, but it would depend on what Meireles is earning. I remember there was a thread on here that speculated his wages at being 30,000 a wee, which if true is ridiculous considering the amount of wages we seem to love chucking at useless wastes of space who don't even make the bench.

Can somebody tell me where these rumours about selling Meireles have come from? Twitter?
That, plus reports of him wanting an improved contract, & the fact we're buying two more CMs.

I reckon he's off. Whilst I like him, I'm gonna give Kenny the benefit of the doubt.

I strongly suspect the wages is the key point. While FSG want to add to the squad, they wanna keep the wage bill as low as possible. That means shipping out players on high wages where possible.

Using reported wages I work it to approx 2 players out equalling 3 players in. This means our squad should be stronger in the short & long term.
I see. So its twitter plus a rumour that he is not getting a payrise that he was promised last year ( which probably originated on twitter as well). Well thats gonna keep me awake all night!

As much as I like Ming, any deal that involves Banega and Mata coming would be unreal. Sounds all too football managerish though.

Btw, he's apparently on £30,000 a week.

Speaking recently about possibly signing a new deal, Raul said: "If I had the opportunity I'd sign a new contract today. 10, 20 years... yeah, for sure."

Cole is on almost 4 times what Meireles is? Superb.

Oncy is right, we are bringing in midfield talent that, like any new players, may or may not pan out. Let's keep the good that we do have.

I'm in favor of more good, not less good.

While the figures are from the media - just like the Cole and Jovanovic ones, it's surprisingly low. The media had him "hoping to double his wages" in reports dating end May 2011.

I guess it has to do with his previous contract and the transfer fee. Probably wasn't on too much in the Portuguese league, coupled with the fact that he wanted to make the move.

deffo think you're making too many presumptions.
I know its assumption Skulf but here we are with our much vaunted new owners and a sea change in mentality yadda yadda.....about to sell our best player of last season......again.

When do we stabilise. When do we sell the shit and improve on what we have instead of asset strip?
Alonso, Mascherano, Torres, Meireles, Aquilani.......thats HALF the best team ever assembled.
Am I missing something here Oncey? FSG assett stripping?
Alonso got shafted by Rafa, Mascherano (who went for a lot less than his true value)and Torres (who went for much more than his true value and was a great deal) were rats leaving a sinking ship (or so they thought) , Aquilani ? Part of the best team we had ever assembled? Although I would happily give him a chance, was a massive mistake that blew up in Rafa's face, and had it not been for Aquilani going on loan, we would not have brought Miereles, the latter is just surrounded by unfounded and unsubstantiated rumour and bollocks.

*Damn I fell for it and rose to the bait :🙂

So the guestimation is that he is on 30k a week and the argument pro-sale is considered to be over wages. Ie-he has a 4 year deal but wants (now that hes shown us he is a good player) to renegotiate. And rather than do that we get him off the wage bill and sign a boy who MAY be as good in 4 years and give him 65k a week.

Its fucking wank.
Hes a good player and we should increase his wage a bit if that will make him happy to stay.

The posts about Meireles (and to an extent Kuyt and Lucas) are staggering when mirrored against the grief given to Mascherano, Torres et al for a percieved lack of loyalty.

'How dare he leave'

'Oh i'd sell him to get him in a heartbeat'

Grrrrrrr You DONT sell your best players if you want to win things.

Oncy do you know something we don't? Who said Raul is leaving/being sold?

I don't want him to leave, I love him to bits btw.

Its all absolute internet bollocks at the moment with people putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with 5.

He has not been picked on by accident for this rumour as he is clearly our most saleable midfield asset.

At least it's not everyone getting excited over Lucas

Inter Milan are considering a move for Liverpool midfielder Raul Meireles, according to reports in Italy.

Inter president Massimo Moratti reckons the Portugal international would fit in well at the San Siro and is keen to press ahead with an enquiry.

The 28-year-old moved to Anfield from Porto in a £13m deal last summer and enjoyed a promising first season in the Premier League, scoring five goals in 33 appearances.

But Meireles will face fierce competition for places at Liverpool following the arrival of Jordan Henderson and the return to fitness of Steven Gerrard over the summer.

And, should Liverpool complete their rumoured move for Blackpool's Charlie Adam, there could be another central midfielder for Meireles to compete with.

He is under contract until 2014 but reports suggested a bid of around £14m might be enought to test Liverpool's resolve to hold on to him.

Its the summer. If you search enough sites you'll find rumours of all of our players being targeted by one club or another.

Okay, maybe not Poulsen

Exactly. And also....i reckon if we are keeping him and we manage to offload Cole, Jovanovic and Poulsen his wages will be upped! That is if we dont have to give Jova a massive payoff which is being mooted!

That'd be the final insult.

I like Meireles and it's true that he was one of last seasons shining lights, but I wouldn't be completely averse to replacing him. Providing the replacement was top quality.

For instance, if we say Meireles serves us best playing as an AM and he gets replaced by a player more like Modric, it's not necessarily a bad thing.

I mean, he knew the conditions and signed it. And he must have got a hefty sign on fee as well.

Im sure it was a substantial pay rise compare to what he was getting at Porto.
1 year later and he's complaining? It doesnt make sense.
He should not have signed it in the first place if he wasnt happy with the offer.

He should sack his agent though.

Thre is a time and place to be tough, and there is a time and place to be accomodating.

Get rid of Meireles, and we'll replace him with another midfielder at probably a lot more money than was paid for Meireles, and definitely at a lot more money.

And he might not be as good as Ming is now.

I don't blame Meireles for wanting more money when he sees DOGSHIT making 2 or 3 times more a month than he does.

If a verbal promise was made, i'd rather the club talked to him and made some sort of deal.

We're still trying to replace the last midfielder we were tough on.

Am I missing something? Has Raul actually moaned about his wages?
Nope.

Ian St John has had his cage rattled today, heard him on the radio going on about Adam signing so that meaning that we're going to trim the squad, which is just 1+1=

People are just doing guess work, the press included because we're looking on wondering where everyone fits, at the end of the day we won't know until preseason kicks off (at the very least).

Shelvey could go on loan for the season as rumoured, Meireles could be sold, or Lucas could, or Spearing. Or everyone could stay and we can work on the understanding that not everyone will always be available, Henderson can play on the right, Lucas or Spearing will drop to the bench, Gerrard has struggled with injury and is getting on a bit so won't always be available and then we have the wonderful Ming and an incoming Charlie Adam as more than adequate options.

So it's maybe not quite as congested as people are making out.

Shelvey - Loan
Lucas - DM
Spearing - Bench
Ming - AM
Gerrard - AM
Adam - CM/AM
Henderson - RW/RM

It's not that mad really. 5/6 players fighting for 4 spots in the team.
