Remember when we were fucking brilliant? I do. Well, the best side we ever had in 88/89... And we had the best attacking mid / forward line on the planet?
Dalglish 38
Aldo 30
Rush 28
Johnston 29
Beardsley 28
Houghton 27
Barnes 26
Oh yeah, but it was different then, blah blah fucking blah.

Krump makes a good point. There is nothing wrong with good older players in a team, In fact I bet if you look at United and Chelsea they have done well with more than a fair share of older players. The core of which have been in the team for some time.
Like any team a good team is one with the right blend of players, and experience is in that mix.
I think that is where things are heading, I suspect the plan is to build a team that will finnish in the top four as a matter of urgency , but has the players to stick together for five, six years or more , build continuity and know each other completely, and having kicedk on to the next stage, after a few years stay there for some time before a major rebuild is required. A team that we don't keep having to complete major overhauls on, with dissatisfied home-sick players and other teams thinking they can unsettle them, but get into the position where we can add one top player per season. Once you are at the top it is much easier to stay there than try and attain it, players want to come, fans are much more forgiving and you can afford it.

good post vlad.
I have nothing against older players, that doesn't come into the arguement imho, what does come into the arguement is Mata and Banega represent better value than meireles alone, there is no arguing that, surely?
obviously selling meireles and replacing him with adam most certainly does not represent better value to the squad.
