Swansea Match Thread

That was dire. But you just have to win those games.
Fair play to the lads for digging 3 points out of that miasma.

Allen was wonderful to watch all night. No one else really shone although Henderson worked very hard and Mignolet, Sakho and Skrtel did well when the players ahead let them down.
Gerrard brought a nice calm head to things.
Horrible to watch.
Great to win.

This.

He looks like he thinks he's too good for the donkey work. Hopefully it's got more to do with him not being fit or being really conservative or selective with his running for fear of picking up another injury.

I was only half watching Carragher after the match but I think he was saying he'd bench Sturridge and Gerrard for the united match.

I thought it was more 3-4-3, with Gerrard at the base of the diamond 4 in midfield.

I guess that's another way to describe it: 3-4-3 diamond 🙂 In this case Sterling/Lallana would be considered wide forwards, which is not entirely accurate because this did play more like wing-backs, tracking back whenever we lost the ball. I don't recall if I ever saw this specific formation employed by any other team before. Guardiola might have done something similar, I don't know.

Mate all wide forwards in a 3-4-3 track back when you lose the ball. They have to.

Maybe Barca with Messi, Neymar, etc didn't, but they're the exception.

Let's put it this way: Dolce and Gabbana won't have anything to do with him.

Is Danny Mills always such a horrific kunt of a commentator?

I haven't heard him on the commentary much but he was doing my head in with his basic imbecilic opinions on Liverpool tonight.

The mouth breathing mong.

Oh my god, if I had to hear that Swansea were dominating one more time. Yes Danny, we are letting them.

Danny Mills was the guy who genuinely wanted Suarez locked up for life (!!!) for nibbling Chiellini. The man is obviously a thumb. Don't pay too much attention to him.

Mignolet was excellent the whole game; came out early with conviction, punched like Bardsley, and pulled off a top save to earn his clean sheet bonus. Even though there was that hairy moment when he made the loose pass to Can after his defenders had conspired to fuck around and get him in trouble, I think it still was more due to Can being lazy / oblivious to the danger of an opponent nearby (I think it was Montero?).

His form's been amazing, and he's certainly making sure we're going to have to call the new #1 keeper we tapped up earlier in the season to apologize and ask him to accept being a deputy, at least for a start.

BTW, I think Gary Monk is a real deal. He is the first manager who found a way to counter our 3-4-3 system effectively. Credit to Rodgers for thinking on his feet and finding a decent response in the 2nd half. But still, Monk deserves plaudits for his tactical preparation and ideas; he is clearly a thinking manager and not just someone who shouts at players. It's still early, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him in charge of a top-4 club at some point.

Can looks terribly out of form at the minute, I'd still stick with the same back three though for now. As for United, I'm in agreement with Carragher, I'd drop Sturridge. Play Sterling up top and use Sturridge later on, put Markovic or Johnson (or both on either side) at wing back.

Not sure if it was mentioned but the main issue in the first half was that Allen and Henderson where too deep, there where times when we had 7 at the back as the wingbacks dropped too deep as well.

Glad Rodgers changed it and pushed the wingbacks higher up and switched to a diamond.

Looking forward to the Manc game...

Loved the MNF analysis - they picked up on two cool things for Hendo's goal:
1) Rodgers waving someone forward from the byline - Hendo looks over
2) After about 2 steps Coutinho makes a sly gesture to Hendo calling him to run on past him.

Once thats been pointed out it is really great to watch it all play out!

I didn't watch the game as I was out but I watched the post game analysis from my recording. Sounds like we were shite first half.

Shelvey has a nasty streak to him.
I wouldn't be surprised if he gets done for this

We were shite first half. The first 10 minutes we shaded I think, but thereafter, Swansea took a hold of the game, and our forwards contrived numerous ways of losing the ball and returning possession to them.

What I really like about BR, more than any of our recent managers, is his capacity to completely change things at half time. Rafa, despite the miracle of Istanbul, was terrible at this generally, his substitutions seemingly pre-programmed, and an obstinacy that his system would prevail, even if it flew in the face of the evidence on the pitch. Ged was also pretty ineffectual as I remember at changing a game that was drifting away from us.

Despite not being scintillating in the 2nd half, we looked completely in control, significantly more dangerous, and offering them very little in return. I really am starting to think BR is quite good at this management thing.

Yep, I'm a massive fan, you can tell hes learnt a lot from Brendan in his style, but hes learnt it very well, I also like his abrasive attitude when talking to the media, hes calm and concise, but at the same time doesn't entertain the shite the media feeds him. Wonderful manager, at a wonderful club.
