4th place

Anyone think Arsenal might get dragged into the 4th place scrap? They have to play Chelsea away this weekend, followed by us the week after. Should we beat Everton and then (somehow) manage to beat Arsenal, we'd likely be just 2 points behind them, on a good run, whilst they would have lost three on the bounce.

With Man City looking likely to compete strongly with further january signings on the cards today, we might be looking at Arsenal as our chief rivals for the 4th spot.

I still think we'll do it.

I reckon both of Citeh and Arsenal will be involved in the scrap.

Can we get a full six points in our next two games we've finally turned the corner and we'd then be firm favourites for 3rd place come May.

We've also got Citeh away after the Arsenal game.

Things could look an awful lot more positive in 3 weeks time, with Torres to come back as well.

Of course, I could also live to regret such optimism. ha.

It could go both ways I reckon but on the other hand things seems to be starting to go our way after all.

I'm with you Buddha. I feel optimistic.

I hate it when you are optimistic....

Love the optimism but on current form i just can't see us beating arse or city, things could also look a lot lot worse come 3 weeks. And the shite thing is if it does turn out shit Benitez will still be in a job.

I've always thought the fight would be between Arsenal, Liverpool and Villa. I figured that Man City and Spurs would find it too difficult to move from the 50 points they had last season to the 70+ points they would need.

We've got Spurs and Man Utd in our next 2 games, followed by a relatively easy run in.

21.02.2010 Burnley home
27.02.2010 Hull City away
06.03.2010 Sunderland home
13.03.2010 Stoke City away
16.03.2010 Wigan Athletic away
20.03.2010 Wolverhampton Wndrs home
27.03.2010 Chelsea away
03.04.2010 Bolton Wanderers away
10.04.2010 Everton home
17.04.2010 Portsmouth away
25.04.2010 Birmingham City home
01.05.2010 Manchester City away
09.05.2010 Blackburn Rovers home

You might be right about Tottenham, but not about Citeh IMO. Hughes dropped a major rick in selling Dunne to you BUT they can get goals from a number of players, whereas if Agbonlahor gets crocked or loses form you fellas will struggle to score enough over a run of games. I wouldn't want to stake my shirt on it, but I see the Villa finishing behind us, Citeh and ultimately Tottenham too. Not saying I want that to happen, but I reckon it will.

Spurs flatter to deceive as usual and are only half the team without Lennon (I think he's out for another month), I really would be shocked if we finished behind them. Man City don't appear to have sorted out their away form, they've only beaten Blackburn, Wolves and Portmouth so far. It's not impossible for them to get into the top 4 but they have to do much better at their away form.

We lost 6 games when we crumbled last season, 2 home and 4 away. We've played all of the equivilant matches already this season and won 5, drawn 1. We're much stronger this season and probably learned a lot from what happened last season I think we'll manage about 70 points this season and can only see yourselves or Arsenal being able to beat that.

Like you, I wouldn't bet the house on it though.

What are people on?
Arsenal would be right up there to win it if they beat Utd yesterday.

1 defeat doesn't change that. Arsenal will cruise to 3rd.

City will get fourth and we may or may not get 5th but it doesn't really matter.

After Everton Arsenal and then City will beat us as things stand.

We don't have the pace to trouble Arsenal and can't stop Arshavin.

Yes I'm just a realist as opposed to having blind hope.

I love the club as much as the next fan and hate to see them lose.

I think everyone who posted in this forum supports liverpool. But some of us just totally lost faith in the manager and don't wear a rose-tinted glass.

Fuck it for this season, I don't think we can even grab a 5th place. Even when Gerrard and Torres are fit, their body language does not seems right.

As fans of the team we would place ourselves as the first person, us. As fans we are part of LFC. When we say LFC, we say us! (sorry for being pedantic and trying to teach English to an Irish)

LOL

To be honest I'm a little fucked off with all the shit Dreamy gets about supporting other clubs, etc. I think he's a bit too pessimistic usually and rides the "I saw this coming before it happened" train a little too hard to the point of annoyance but IMO there is no questioning his support of the club. And anyone suggesting he takes pleasure in our failures this season should get bent. Just my opinion likes.

Thanks Darkstarexodus and ya I agree I'm probably to down for most on here but I really only call it as I see it.

And the fact we were so close to the title winning side 2 summers ago it really got to me when Rafa f*cked it up with transfers.

I thought he had finally gotten it only to realise he hadn't and probably never would. And again this season has only backed up that feeling.

It is shit seeing us like this and I f*cking hate having to talk to rival fans day in day out about it and hear them mockingly say "ye'll win it next season".

Most other clubs fans laugh at us these days instead of respect us. So ya it annoys when people say sh*t like ohh we can still get 3rd.

Anything bar 1st is not good enough for a LFC manager and anyone who thinks I don't support Liverpool can get bent.

I have really tried to not post at all when things have gone really bad this year.

If we can get 4th place this time out it would be quite an achievement.

We have a small stadium meaning low income, inadequate financing to compete for the best players both in terms of transfer fees and, most definitely, wages (which curiously most leave out of their 'spending' league tables).

This means we have insufficient quality in the squad, as most would agree our first XI are a match for most. We stand about about 7th in the total spending League and therefore we are about par.

Our history and expectation leads us to think we can overachieve. It saddens me but money is what is needed. Dissecting the details of who is and who isn't good enough for the squad, the tactics employed; and whether a change of coach can make up for years of stagnation and under-investment is pointless although interesting nonetheless.

Maybe changing a small detail can do it but I'm not convinced. I think a large detail needs to change and thats cash, cash and more cash. If we can get 4th we'll scrape it and it'll be getting more out and than we've put in.

Don't Utd have a very strict budget for wages?

They spend more than us.

I agree with the fact that we need to invest a lot of money in this squad. I don't at all agree that 4th is some sort of massive over-achievement... at all.
