Florian and the (Slot) Machine

Whilst I know it's not cool to have a non polarised opinion on this forum, there is a perfect valid line of reasoning that Wirtz has shown encouraging signs, especially in the second half yesterday, but we need to start seeing goals, assists and meaningful impacts on games soon for such a big signing. That's where I'm at, and that's what I think we'll start to see soon now we've got three super tough games out of the way, I'm excited.

A small moment, but his touch to take down a superb cross field ball from Szlob yesterday was out of this world, it's just a little glimpse of the immense ability he has, I'm not worried in the slightest yet. If this hasn't changed by November maybe then we can talk, but this narrative of him being a passenger is unwarranted for me. For now, like I just said, I remain super excited at what we'll see when he starts adjusting to this new system, the team, and new league.

There are glimpses of the magic. That first touch from Szobo's long pass, the switch of feet on that shot that led to the disallowed goal, his ability to wriggle out of tight spaces. He's going to be immense when it all clicks. Some poor schmucks are going to give him a bit of space rather than pressing hard and in his face, and he's going to take them to the cleaners. We just need to find a way of getting him that space on a more regular basis.
And on the whole thing of player technique, 20 years ago we'd have been talking about the control from that long pass for weeks on end. These days it happens multiple times a game and we think it's entirely unremarkable. These players are at a totally different level to our great sides of the past.
As if you've posted this 30 seconds before I did, you've done me a dirty mate.

Could for he’s been shite but he’ll come good and he’s important for Germany.

He showed promise in the second half vs Arsenal but ultimately so far Rio has contributed more to the teams 9 pts than Wirtz.

He needs to start scoring or assisting soon or the pressure will mount.

He hasnt been shit, and he was excellent in the 2nd half.
As long as we are winning games there will be less pressure on him re goals/assists. But he'll grow even further into his role in the team when he gets of the mark. Could have had a few assists already with better finishing from Salah.

For what he’s capable of and the expectations he came with, coupled with the first half of the charity shield I think he’s been shit. Hopefully the second half bs Arsenal will give him confidence to kick on.

Salah hasn’t been himself but has still contributed infinitely more so far.

I counted at least 4 misplaced passes there. One nice pass zipped into the box, one great bit of control on the run, one nice little shimmy. The control and snap shot in the box was very good. No goals, no assists, no chances created, no impactful dribbles.

That isn't remotely an "excellent" performance. It was ok - an improvement.

The 2nd half performance was what I expected from his first minute for us. So for me he's behind schedule. Ideally next game against an easier opposition, he should be controlling it. If he's not, theres a little concern.

I still think he will be excellent

It's the sloppiness of the passing that's bothered me most. At an absolute minimum he has to be receiving the ball smoothly and passing it on accurately with the correct weight. I can't believe he's not capable of that so I've just got to put it down to nerves or some kind of shock at the pace of the league.

Yeah, I didn't see "excellence" in that game either. Improvement and encouraging signs? For sure.

I don't think this is being negative, a bad fan lacking in patience or whatever else - it's just calling a spade a spade.

Everyone wants him to succeed and be a superstar. We don't have to say he is from minute one in order for that to be true though.

I said in game that he needs to add more zip to his passing. I can see what hes trying to do, but you ain't got the time for the passes to trundle over.

Looked good there to me

Indeed. People are mostly looking for flaws and what players aren't doing, sadly.
Misplaced 4 passes.. Boink.

He was excellent in that 2nd half. Nearly scored a goal and created a few chances for Salah.
The thing that was mostly impressive and what had been lacking was the defensive contribution.
He won 5/6 ground duels and 2/2 tackles while completing the most dribbles 3/3 in the game. Taking out Gabriel on defensive set pieces. It was a clear indication that adapting to the intensity is closer.
Always running, most sprints and covered ground next to Szobo.

The technical part of his game is world class so the attacking returns will come.

Big improvement and he's on the right path. He will sadly be some sort scapegoat regardless of the amount of goals/assists he achieves I reckon.
There will always be people that will beat him with the transfer fee stick.
