Florian and the (Slot) Machine

Ideally he excels in the 10. Worst case scenario I can see him being pushed wide.
Paying our record fee then having to move him round to get him in the side feels bonkers.
That's short term thinking. He's a generational talent, fantastic in the BL and for Germany. We just need to make it work. Elliott is a million miles behind him.
It’s calling a spade a spade. Nothing generational in games it has mattered. Looked decent in slow paced friendlies and when the going gets tough he didn’t get going.
As a fellow early Nunez caller, I think you might be going to early on this one.

Whilst he has looked sloppy / weak, I think he has also looked clever and hard working, so there is a decent chance he will adjust his game. Also our system clearly needs a lot of work (as an aside, Giovanni van Bronckhorst as assistant manager has to be a little concerning, he was a bit crap as Rangers manager) and it's making almost everyone look crap.
This reminds me of a scene from the dark knight. I know the squealers when I see them. I had hopes for aqualiani, Thiago and cherou. Those are who I think about when I see Wirtz.

I remember other big money signings and kids coming through. Torres, Suarez, Mane, Salah, Alonso and even Owen and Fowler just came in and showed they belonged from day one.
We don't need him to strengthen. He just needs to get use to the intensity of the PL. That adjustment is individual in regards to the time it takes. The transition from the Bundesliga is a real thing.
People need to chill out and give him time. He'll be boss for us.

Strange that people want to give Harvey Elliott the time and day to develop. But this lad is younger and has been here 5 minutes and people are calling this and giving up that already. Embarrassing in all honesty. Thought we were better than Utd and Arsenal fans.
He’s as strong as a wet echo. I’d give Elliott time because he’s got the same physical attributes and didn’t cost us £110 million. Plus he’s a red through and through.
This, but he hasnt been shit. And we won both games. People need to get a grip. Fucking moaners delux.
He has been shit. Yesterday it was 0 goals, 0 assists, 0 key passes, 0 dribbles, 0 long balls, 0 aerial duels won, 3/6 ground duels won and 7 times possession lost. Shit.
I remember calling Beardsley out as shit, 2 games into his LFC career. I was also young & stupid once, so there's hope for you yet Momo 😉
I’m well into middle age young man.

Well look who it is!

Yes, I do wonder if in the tougher games, like Arsenal, if we'll see Gakpo making way for Wirtz, allowing us to have Szob, Macca and Gravy in the engine room.
Hello old bean!

I'd like to see us make more use of Endo and also bolster the squad with another proper number 6.

I think we could definitely use a dedicated 6 at some stage. I love Endo, but I just don't think he's going to get more than his role of coming on late in games, so that being the case I wonder if there are still hopes for Bajcetic at the club. He's back training apparently and there doesn't appear to be any noise about him going anywhere.

You’ve lost your glasses and mind if you think Elliott has the same physical attributes.

He looks best when he roams out to the left forward area. When he drops into central midfield he looks lightweight, as we do generally in that area, even with Gravenberch back.

I called Nunez after two games. I’m doing it again.

£110 million for a project. Fuck that. It should be the finished article to hit the ground running for that outlay.
I called it watching his compilations and was torn to shreds. It was a stupidly high risk and I’m not in the least bit surprised he’s taking time to adjust. The question now will be if he cracks under the pressure.

For 110M he should be an instant hit. Fucking Hugo should be the project and he’s flying.

Adjusting to the intensity in the league is individual, and no one "should" be an instant hit. It isnt a stupidly high risk to purchase the best up and coming10 in the world that is made for this team. But calling someone a failure before they play or after 2 league games is stupid. Its beyond stupid.

The data nerds and Slot love him. That should be enough for everyone to get behind this signing, but certain people will always look to find happiness in the potential failure and call it out as soon as there is anything to moan about.

Give him time and just watch him develop into a superstar.

Yeah but you also said no to Ekitike: "Too raw to be another project in this league at that price".

Wirtz will prove you wrong as well

Agreed. "Instant hit" from another league almost never happens, regardless of price. Given Wirst's role, it is even more unlikely. It will need some time to settle, but is definitely NOT a project. One of the best and hardest working attacking midfielders in the world and only 21.

I was guilty of saying that David Silva would never work in the PL and was proved totally wrong, so I refrained from expressing concerns about Wirtz because if a player in that mould has that kind of genius linking play, they clearly can be extraordinary in this league. Everything that Wirtz has done previously suggests he can be that guy.

This is my baseline. Especially when you are a record signing.

Tbf that was his second game and had one of our best ever centre midfield combos. Wirtz is working with old man Salah, cautious Cody and a still learning (but clearly mustard) Hugo.

I'm sure he'll be reet. We just need to find our swagger
Wirtz has had a home and away game. Stank both out with a mix of Gravenberch, Szoboszlai and MacAllister. Hardy plodders.

Just exactly what is the point of going on and on about Wirtz playing poorly in his first two games?

Thanks for posting that video though....I'd take any excuse to watch Torres and Gerrard making Mourinho jealous.....

The eye test tells you he’s super technically talented, he constantly moving looking to receive the ball, can go left, right…play a pass. Is capable of beating a player and has a decent shot from either foot.

He’s yet to settle - but that’s not unusual for a 22 year old coming to a new country, new home, new team mates in a new league.

If he has resilience and we are patient, I fully expect him to come good.

They might not be plodders but it's hardly a settled midfield behind him though. Jones and gravy one game, szob and Macca the other. And he was fine in both games. Not good, but fine.

Much easier for a forward than a playmaker to be an instant hit.

I absolutely hope I am. Hugo has been immense and beyond anything I’d seen in terms of his finishing or link up play.

Wirtz is already proving me right. I said there was a huge risk he wouldn’t adapt and even if he did it would take time which we couldn’t afford at that price.

I still think he’ll come good but it’s not as certain as it was according to many on here.

I feel for him. Tough start in terms of opponents and how they press/bully players in the middle of the park and I doubt Arsenal will be any different.

Fuck up @MomoWASright - you’re encouraging Dreamie to make Wirtz his “I told you so” mission for this season. 😜

Besides… it’s been 2 fucking games man - and I don’t think he was any more dogshit that a few other players in either.

He’ll be fine - it’s just getting up to speed - he has the ability and technique to be a success.

Nobody is "already proving" anything after the grand total of two games.
